The terrifying kitten, a veritable incarnation of death, held a black sickle poised over the venomous spider's head. Leo had already proven that while a symbiote could rapidly heal its host, there were limits. If the host suffered damage that far exceeded the speed of repair, the symbiote would be forced to abandon it, and the host would die.
"Please, don't kill him!" Aunt May cried, rushing in front of the venomous spider. She opened her arms, shielding it with her own thin body.
But Leo, his human reason collapsing, couldn't hear her. He was only focused on what he thought was the right thing to do, even if it made him look like a villain.
Just as he was about to strike, two laser beams blasted through the side of the tentacle cage. A figure in a gold and red steel suit dropped from the sky, landing in a classic three-point stance. The man-made steel god stood up, a dazzling white light building in the palm of his raised hand.
"You guys are really having a lively party tonight," Iron Man quipped, his cheerful tone completely at odds with the tense atmosphere.
"It's Iron Man!"
"We're saved!"
The fear and despair that had gripped the crowd vanished, replaced by a surge of hope. In New York City, only Iron Man could command such a reaction.
"This isn't a fan reception, folks," he continued. "So, if you could all please clear the area."
The crowd reacted immediately, scrambling out of the broken tentacle cage. Iron Man appeared relaxed and in control, but inside the suit, Tony Stark was anything but.
"J.A.R.V.I.S., what am I looking at?" he whispered, his eyes fixed on the seemingly harmless black kitten.
"I'm sorry, sir. There is no information in the database. I can only preliminarily judge it to be an alien organism."
Two unknown alien creatures fighting each other, Tony thought, glancing at the venomous spider lying behind the woman.
At that moment, the black kitten's paw, which had been stuck in the ground, moved.
Thinking it was about to attack the evacuating civilians, Iron Man fired a laser blast. The bright beam shot across the street and slammed into the black kitten's head.
The scorching energy washed over Leo's small body. He had been about to retract the tentacle cage, but now, a surge of pure, unadulterated rage washed over him. A normal Leo might have dismissed it as a misunderstanding, but the Trinity Leo, the Leo whose human reason was almost gone, was a creature of violence, bloodlust, and wild, wicked fury.
As the devastating laser energy rippled across its dark skin, the black cat that was Leo became a black streamer, breaking the sound barrier and slamming into Iron Man's lower abdomen.
BANG!
Iron Man felt as if he had been hit by a miniaturized truck. "Parts damaged," J.A.R.V.I.S. warned as the steel suit was sent flying into the wall of a tall building.
"Fire at will!" Tony snarled.
Four miniature missiles shot from the suit's shoulder-mounted launchers, trailing flames as they flew toward the black kitten.
Leo, hovering in the air, opened his mouth to a terrifying size and, like a child eating candy, bit the oncoming missiles out of the air. They detonated in his mouth, causing his cheeks to bulge for a moment before he relaxed, let out a hiccup, and spit out a few rings of gunpowder-flavored smoke.
Tony stared in disbelief. He finally understood why Banner had been so desperate to become the Hulk. This cat was a monster, a creature that defied all logic and science. He gritted his teeth and took to the air, unleashing the full firepower of his suit. Missiles and lasers filled the sky, a gorgeous, deadly firework display.
The Iron Man hovering in the sky became a human-shaped fortress, a beacon of light and power.
Leo grinned like a demon. His claws hardened, his tail morphed into a slender tentacle, and he began to swat the missiles out of the air like flies.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
The explosions shattered every window on both sides of the street. Suddenly, one of the small missiles veered off course and shot toward Aunt May.
"Shit!" Iron Man cried, but it was too late to stop it.
Aunt May's eyes widened in horror. Just as the missile was about to hit her, the venomous spider, which had been lying on the ground, flipped over and shielded her with its own body.
In the surging firelight, half of the venomous spider's head melted away, revealing a glimpse of Peter's young, tear-streaked face. A single tear, a sign of his humanity, fell onto Aunt May's cheek.
In the center of the explosion, Leo stood unscathed, his attention fixed on the scene below.
"The human boy has taken back some control," Venom said, surprised. "But it's only temporary. The symbiote will regain dominance soon."
"You mean, he can still be saved?" A trace of clarity returned to Leo's eyes, the broken strings of his human reason reattaching themselves.
"If you can separate him from the symbiote now, he might survive," Venom replied.
"I see."
Leo looked at the venomous spider below, then at Iron Man above. A flash of inspiration struck him. Two of his claws shot out, entangling Iron Man's arms and legs.
A question mark popped into Iron Man's mind, and then he was violently pulled down into a dark hole.
Leo closed his mouth and landed lightly on the ground.
The streets were filled with smoke. Iron Man was gone.
It was the best suggestion the Flerken had given him all night.
