Chapter 19 - What did you do

Knox's POV

The journey back to the pack house was filled with silence. Kanes knuckles, white, gripped the steering wheel. I stared out the window watching pack members in the town go about their daily lives.

Deathshadow pack, despite its name was a beautiful place and the people of our pack were happy.

Every woman's face that passed was replaced by the image of Callie's. Raw and in pain.

Havoc paced angrily in my mind, growling at me. I tried talking to him but he'd shut me out. Angry at my actions in the club.

When we arrived, Kane left the car without a word, slamming the door behind him and storming into the pack house.

I rubbed my hands over over my face, running them through my hair before stepping out.

As I walked into the pack house my mother stood in front of the entry way, arms cold, foot tapping the floor impatiently. Her face said it all.

"Knox Tanner get yourself in your fathers study this instance" I flinched slightly, my jaw ticked at her commanding tone, dripping with fury. The alpha in me wanted to object but the son in me knew this wasn't the time to cross her.

Only a handful of times in our childhood had our mother spoken to us this way.

As I climbed the stairs of the pack house my mind trailed off, thinking back to the time I'd accidentally broken Alfie's arm after climbing the old oak tree mother had forbade us from climbing.

We were aged ten at the time, Alfie stood on the ground below me as I climbed higher and higher, urging me to come down. I ignored him, continued climbing until a branch snapped beneath my feet. I must have fallen twelve feet. Straight on top of Alfie, I'll never forget the scream that ripped out of him.

That night in hospital mother had used that very same tone on me. The look of disappointment flared in her eyes.

I finally reached fathers study, pausing outside, taking a deep breath before opening the door. Kane already stood looking straight ahead in front of fathers large mahogany desk, hands grasped behind his back, shoulders straight. Father was looking over some paperwork, his Beta John stood beside him, pointing out places he needed to sign.

When I reached the place besides Kane, Father looked up, he rest his pen down gentle and clasped his hands together on the desk in front of him. His eyes burned into mine for a brief moment before calmly speaking to his Beta-"We will pick this up later, you may leave now."

John gave a curt nod, raising his eyebrow at Kane and me before quietly exiting the study. The door clicked shut. Silence.

"What. Did. You. Do?" Father gritted out slowly in a low tone.

Kane looked to me out of the corner of his eye, blame oozing from his face.

Father clocked Kanes expression. His stare now rested wholly on me.

I shifted slightly on my feet. The silence engulfing the study, even Havoc had gone quiet in my mind.

"SPEAK!" Our Father growled.

Before I could reply Kane stepped forward. "Father, as you know we have found our mate. Her name is Callie. Although.. she didn't know she was a wolf, growing up in the human world. Knox believed this was suspicious, a potential spy or enemy sent to hurt us."

Father looked between us, dumbfounded, speechless. He looked to Kane to continue.

"He didn't think the mate bond was real, despite Doctor Mary confirming Callie had been taking wolf suppressants unknowingly, believing she had a heart condition. Knox.. he, we went to the club and…" he shook his head as if trying to make the memory disappear. Guilt flooded in my stomach. I remained in my position, looking straight ahead.

"Father, when the healer came…s..she spoke of a vision."

Our Fathers hard expression cracked, replaced with pure horror.

"What did the healer see" he said.

Kane looked to me, pain swelling in his eyes. As the words he was about to repeat caused physical pain to his soul.

I flinched, stepping forward and clearing my throat slightly. "She said… if I reject Callie..she and I will both die." I swallowed before adding- "and brothers will be no more."

Silence hung in the air. Suffocating.

Father placed both hands on his desk, steadying himself as he stood slowly. His eye bore into mine, shifting to his wolf's. In a deathly tone that sent shivers down my spine, putting all of his alpha aura behind it -"You, Will. Not. Reject her."

He left no room for argument before dismissing us.

When we stepped out of the office I turned to speak to Kane, before I could open my lips he stormed pass me, exiting the pack house.
