Chapter 10 - When Memories Fade

Daphne slowly opened her eyes as the sunlight shone bright on her face. Her head was banging and she groaned wondering why it felt so heavy. Agnes who was sleeping beside her rose her head when she heard the groan and she gasped in joy.

"My lady," she said, checking her. She has been asleep for one week and everyone was worried. The physicians explained the force of the hit was too much so she had a concussion. They treated the wound but it was left for her to wake up. Agnes was scared she might slip into coma, the princess didn't move immediately her head hit the floor and the force of it was heavy as she bled immediately. But she was so happy she was awake, she was worried.

"What happened?" she groaned, trying to seat up. Agnes helped her, putting a pillow behind her.

"I will get the physicians," she said, running away and Daphne watched her go. She was acting rather suspicious. Daphne tried to remember what happened but a sharp pain passed through her head. Her memory was foggy, the last thing she remembered was having breakfast with the king and his other wives, but what happened after that? The door opened and she saw men wearing a white robe walking towards her, they bowed their heads.

"How is her lady feeling?" the one in front of her asked.

"My head feels heavy," she said and he nodded his head, moving closer to her. He removed the bandage on her head and Daphne was surprised there was a bandage wrapped around her head. After checking her and asking a lot of questions, he moved back.

"A medicine would be sent soon, please her lady shouldn't think too much and try to relax," he said and Daphne was confused. Something is definitely going on? What happened to her? And why is she here with a bandage wrapped around her head? The physician left and Daphne was left in the room.

"I will inform his majesty," he said to the other physicians and they nodded their heads. Alexandro was in his study as usual, he hasn't heard anything from the physicians and he is getting worried. Head injury is the worst type of injury and they can't know how bad it is until she wakes up.

"I want to speak to his majesty about princess Daphne," he heard from outside.

"Let him in," Alexandro said, dropping the scroll. The physician walked in and bowed his head.

"How is she?" he asked.

"The princess is awake but can't remember what happened. She is out from the concussion now but if she keeps passing out or forgetting things it can only mean the fall is more fatal than we expected, your majesty. We will keep checking on her but the princess has to hold on from any stressful activity, to avoid her passing out and eventually falling into a coma" he said with his head still bowed.

"Make sure no one reminds her of what happened and also she is eating her meals regularly," he said and the physician nodded his head.

"You may leave," he said.

"Okay, your majesty," he said, walking away. Alexandro sighed, and it seems the princess is more fragile now. The wine must have contributed to it but thankfully she is not dead. He stood up, heading to the dungeon. Rose has been there for a week, barely fed. He hasn't given her the punishment, that's what scared everyone most. The palace has been very quiet, the servants all walking eggshells around the queens and king. No one wants to be at the receiving end of their anger.

Alexandro got to the dungeon and Rose laid in the corner of the cell, folding herself to a ball as she slept. She wasn't aware of his presence. Rose had slept out of hunger and worry, the guards were not telling her anything concerning the princess, she was worried why his majesty wasn't punishing her and she was also worried about the princess' health. Rose hates princess Daphne but she doesn't want to be the one to kill her, she had no idea the princess was that fragile. She only wanted her to trip on her feet and fall, she was shocked when the princess laid on the floor not moving with blood coming out of her head. Her foolishness has gotten her here.

"Wake her up," Alexandro said and the guards bowed. Opening the cell, they shook her and Rose flinched awake. She turned around with sleepy eyes but it cleared the moment her eyes set on him.

"Your majesty," she said, her head bowed. Rose wondered what he was going to do to her, would he ask for her to be whipped? She bit her lips, closing her eyes while hoping he wouldn't.

"Release her," he said and everyone looked at him in shock, including Rose. Release her? Everyone saw how angry he was when he carried princess Daphne to the physicians and they would have sworn he was going to make Rose regret her actions, but now he is releasing her?

"I don't like to repeat myself," Alexandro snapped and the guards snapped out of their thoughts, opening the gate. They helped Rose up and Alexandro gave her a blank look. He wishes to punish her but he is only doing this for Daphne. She is the youngest and also fragile, he has to keep her safe in the midst of the queens. Rose tried to walk but she has a sprained ankle from when the guards dragged her here and it didn't help that she feels so weak. Alexandro went to her, carrying her in a bridal style and he left the dungeon.

Rose remained frozen in his arms. Was his majesty really carrying her? Isn't he angry at her actions? She was confused and she thought she was dreaming but she wasn't. Everyone gasped as they passed, once again, his majesty was showing public affection to one of his wives. What should they make of it? She almost killed princess Daphne, he locked her up in the dungeon now he is carrying her bridal style, walking down the hallways of the palace.

"Where are your chambers?" he asked, his voice blank. Rose flinched at the coldness of his voice.

"Left," she whispered. Alexandro turned left and kept following her instructions. Soon, they arrived at her chambers and he placed her on the bed.

"Thank you, your majesty," Rose said, looking down at his feet.

"This would be your last warning queen Rose, you know the laws guiding this kingdom. As a queen, you are not allowed to kill or torture your fellow queen unless the situation permits. Your actions were rash and childish and it almost cost her life. I am being lenient now but I won't promise what would happen to you the next time this happens," he said and Rose felt the cold jolt down her spine. He addressed her so strictly and coldly. His majesty was only doing this to protect Daphne, he was angry he was letting her go.

"Yes, your majesty," she said. Alexandro gave her one more look then he left, his soft footsteps walking down the hallway. Rose looked at her closed door and her heart ached. What can she do to make his majesty notice her? Or is she a fool for wanting his majesty to love her knowing she had no chance among those women. He is the king, and he has so many enemies. Why on earth would she be jealous and bitter towards another woman when he is barely thinking about her? She laid down on the bed, breathing out. She needs to apologize to the princess.
