Chapter 31 - Chapter 31: Test

Bakugo Katsuki put his legs on the table and waited calmly for the teacher to arrive. He didn't know who the teacher for Class 1-A of the Hero Course would be, but he hoped it wasn't some weakling.

"Don't put your feet on the desk!"

A loud shout rang out, and Tenya Iida, wearing glasses, came to stand in front of Katsuki Bakugo, speaking seriously.

"Hah?" Bakugo raised an eyebrow and looked at Tenya Iida, wondering where this guy had come from.

"Don't you think this is disrespectful to the U.A. upperclassmen and the people who made these desks?" Iida Tenya said, gesturing with his hands.

Bakugo Katsuki scoffed, "Like I care. What junior high are you from, you extra?"

Just as the two were arguing, Yang Xiao noticed a problem. Izuku Midoriya hadn't arrived yet. According to the normal plot, Izuku Midoriya should have reached the classroom by now and should be standing at the door.

Bakugo Katsuki and Tenya Iida had been arguing for a while now, and still, Izuku Midoriya hadn't come.

Yang Xiao waited a bit longer, and finally, after Tenya Iida and Katsuki Bakugo stopped arguing, Izuku Midoriya entered the classroom.

"Deku!" Bakugo Katsuki shouted angrily.

Midoriya Izuku immediately shrunk his neck in, like a frightened chicken, and looked at Bakugo with worry, "Kacchan..."

"How did you get into the Hero Course, Class 1-A? How did you pass the exam?" Bakugo Katsuki demanded, staring intently at Izuku Midoriya. Although he had heard some things about Izuku's exam results, he didn't quite believe it.

How was it possible that the weakling he used to bully all the time had become so strong now? How long had it even been?

"Ah... well... it's nothing..." Izuku Midoriya began to stammer incoherently. What he feared most was Kacchan asking him this kind of question, and he had no idea how to answer.

"Hah? You saying you don't wanna talk about it?!" Bakugo Katsuki yelled. Tenya Iida, who was sitting not far away, couldn't stand it any longer and wanted to continue arguing with Bakugo Katsuki.

"Ah, it's that plain-looking girl with the brown bob!" Just then, a girl's voice sounded at the door. Izuku Midoriya turned his head and saw it was the girl he had saved.

Ochaco Uraraka looked at Izuku Midoriya in surprise, "You were right, he passed after all!"

Izuku Midoriya's face suddenly turned red. He wasn't good at talking to girls and was very shy.

"But it's only natural. After all, your punches were so powerful," Ochaco Uraraka said, waving her small fists mimically: "Smash, smash, smash..."

"Well, actually, it was thanks to you giving me that idea that I... well..." Izuku Midoriya stuttered.

Bakugo Katsuki half-squinted his eyes as he watched Midoriya chatting with Ochaco Uraraka not far away. He felt a little angry. What was going on with U.A. High School? Even someone like Deku could get in, and into the same Class 1-A Hero Course as him!

And there's another one, that guy sitting in the corner. He looks so weak, but he also got into Class 1-A. I really don't get it.

"If you're here to make friends, then save it for somewhere else."

Just as Izuku Midoriya was at a loss, a weary, gravelly voice sounded. Then they saw a yellow sleeping bag on the floor behind Ochaco Uraraka, and the face of a scruffy, bearded man poked out from the opening.

"This is the Hero Course." The scruffy man unzipped the sleeping bag a little, pulled out a juice pouch, and sucked on it, looking utterly bizarre.

"There's... there's a weird thing here!" This startled the students at the door. Who was this?

"Alright, it took you 8 seconds to quiet down. Time is limited, and you're all lacking in common sense." The speaker was, of course, Shota Aizawa, a teacher at U.A. High School. If he bothered with his appearance, the female teachers at the school might actually admire him.

The key point is that Shota Aizawa simply dislikes the spotlight and avoids trouble, so he doesn't shave or trim his hair, looking like a homeless man struggling to get by.

Yang Xiao recalled that Ms. Joke, the homeroom teacher for Ketsubutsu Academy High School's Second Year, Class 2, had a thing for Shota Aizawa, but Aizawa had clearly stated he wasn't interested in a relationship.

However, Ms. Joke wasn't a woman who gave up easily and had been silently paying attention to Shota Aizawa.

"So, that person is a Pro Hero too?" a student asked, confused, looking at Shota Aizawa as he walked into the room from the doorway.

"But, I've never seen such a listless person before..."

"I'm your homeroom teacher, Shota Aizawa. Pleased to meet you." Shota Aizawa seemed to ignore the students' murmurs. He looked at everyone with his half-lidded eyes, and finally, his gaze landed on Yang Xiao.

Yang Xiao had a strange feeling, as if he was being singled out?

That shouldn't be right. His performance had been so mediocre that no student or teacher should be paying him any special attention.

Did something go wrong with the process?

Aizawa Shota withdrew his gaze, adjusted the sleeping bag in his hand, and took out a bundle of gym uniforms from it. "Don't waste time. Put these on and go to the playground."

Everyone got a uniform, but Yang Xiao suddenly realized that there seemed to be one person missing from the class?

He only realized it now. Everyone who should be in the class was here, so who was missing?

Yang Xiao glanced over all his classmates and only then realized the missing student was Koji Koda. His Quirk was Anivoice: he could infuse his will into his voice to command animals and insects.

Was this student eliminated without anyone noticing?

Yang Xiao felt a little confused, but this way, the number of students in the class would be even.

After gathering everyone on the playground, Shota Aizawa announced the purpose.

"A Quirk apprehension test?"

"What about the entrance ceremony? What about the orientation?" Ochaco Uraraka asked, puzzled. In her opinion—no, in everyone's opinion—the first day of school had to include an entrance ceremony and a school orientation.

How could they start with a test right away?

"If you aspire to become heroes, you won't have time for such leisurely activities," Shota Aizawa said flatly, his back to everyone. "U.A.'s greatest selling point is its freedom. And that applies to the teachers, too. You all took a standard physical fitness test in junior high, right? The one that banned the use of Quirks."

"Our country is still using those outdated standard records to set averages. It's utterly irrational. Well... that's the Ministry of Education's negligence for you." Aizawa Shota turned around, and his eyes fell on Yang Xiao once more. "The top scorer on the practical exam was Bakugo, right?"

It's Bakugo, so why is he looking at me? Yang Xiao felt a growing confusion. He had a persistent feeling that Aizawa Shota was targeting him. Shouldn't he be looking at Katsuki Bakugo right now?

The next moment, Aizawa Shota's gaze shifted to Katsuki Bakugo. "Bakugo. How far could you throw a softball in junior high?"

"67 meters," Bakugo Katsuki answered truthfully. He wasn't being cocky in front of his teacher.
