Chapter 5 - He's not that bad

"What is the cause of her cancer? Wilfred asked Dr Thompson. The doctor that he currently chooses to be in charge of Celine's mum.

"I think it's caused by hair products." Dr Thompson said.

"You think? Oh my goodness, do you even know your job here?" Mr Wilfred said feeling uncomfortable.

"Sir, I need you to calm down. Maybe they don't use H&L hair products. Dr Thompson said.

"Okay please make your inquiry and make sure nobody finds out about it, especially not Celine." Mr Wilfred demanded.

"Yes, sir, I'll handle just that."

Celine's mum has a heart problem. It's ninety percent possible that she won't survive the surgery.

Celine became devastated. Now that she has the money there is yet another problem. Their medication bills have increased tenfold. She'll not only buy drugs that will temporarily heal the cancer. She's also getting heart problems.

That night at work, Celine sat down at the company's sit-out, throwing stones at a very far distance. At that point, it felt like the only thing that would help her calm down.

"Hey…. Don't spoil someone's car with that." Mr Wilfred said, sitting down beside her.

Celine pretended as if she didn't hear anybody and kept throwing stones.

"I understand…." Mr Wilfred said again.

"I have returned your money. Why else are you sitting with me, your Majesty?" Celine said, sarcastically

"My mum died of cancer." Mr Wilfred said.

Celine stopped throwing the stones. She immediately felt a sharp pain for a stranger.

"I tried everything within my power. I flew her across the best hospitals in the world but nothing happened. She later died." Mr Wilfred continued.

"I'm so sorry sir… I didn't know you went through that." Celine said, dropping the rest of the stones.

"You can call me Wilfred." Mr Wilfred said.

"Please, sir ...sorry, Wilfred, is it weird that I want to know the cancer that killed your mum?" Celine asked, yet insisting.

"Uterine cancer." He answered.

"Oh, what's the cause? Celine became more desperate.

"I don't know. All I know is that I lost my sweet mum over that deadly stuff." He said.

"You know I used to dream about how I'll become a member of this company apart from being a janitor. I'll take pictures with my mum in my uniform." Celine said weeping.

"I worked part-time as a high school kid, I even went ahead to reject good scholarship offers to college because I wanted to stay close to my mum. But she's not getting any better." Celine said with tears soaked on her shirt; this time around, you can clearly hear her breaking voice.

Mr Wilfred held her and tried to console her but she wouldn't stop crying.

At this moment, Wilfred remembered all he went through because of his mum, and he knows quite well that the hair products that killed his mum are the same thing that is disturbing Mrs Grace.

His dead father was the original owner of the company before it was handed over to him through his will. He tried everything possible to stop this but to no avail.

There is a board of directors, shareholders, and investors who know about this and also threaten to spoil Mr Wilfred's family name, accuse him of fraud, and put him in jail for life if he crosses paths.

All he could think of when consoling Celine was how he failed in bringing justice to his mum's name and preventing other people from using these deadly products.

"Thank you so much, sir….I think I'll go home now to my sister before she becomes worried." Celine said, grabbing her handbag.

"It's Wilfred and I would like to drop you off….." Mr Wilfred insisted.

"Sir..sorry, Mr Wilfred, I'm…"

"No, you don't have any choice, it's a command, not a request," Wilfred said, interrupting her.

On their way home, Dr Thompson kept calling him, but he wouldn't pick up. This created suspicion about him.

"Sir you can take your call," Celine said.

"It's nothing serious. He's my family doctor, he just wanted to confirm if I'm doing alright, that's all." Wilfred lied.

"And what is that with the Sir all the time? He said smiling.

"The people on the picture frame in your office…who are they? Celine asked confidently and a little bit scared.

"The people who worked before me," Wilfred answered.

"You mean the former CEO's? She asked again.

"No…just my father's co-workers…. Sorry, why are you asking? Wilfred said.

"Nothing I'm just eager to know," Celine answered.

They got to Celine's location she thanked him and was about to leave.

"You know I cleared your mum's hospital bills even after you gave me back my money." Mr Wilfred said.

"Oh my goodness, thank you so much, sir …..I mean Wilfred. Thank you, and I'm sorry for misjudging you from the start. You're such a nice man." Celine said before leaving his car.

"Something is not adding up. My father worked at the H&L company, but he never mentioned it. He was also one of the top officials….. I can now understand clearly why he could afford all these hair products at that time." Celine whispered to herself on her way up to her apartment.

"But daddy wasn't that rich …. He was one of the top officials. Although we were doing fine but he's not as rich as expected." Celine continued asking herself the same questions on repeat.

She swore that day that something was off and she would get to the root of it.
