Chapter 9 - Menchis adventure, meeting anomalies

Originally the boy and three others, well now two other youths expected Menchi to be one of them. This was further cemented when the boy and two other youths listened in to their conversation, when Menchi mentioned Nen.

But with this comment, they doubted themselves. She was way too childish, had way too much energy.

Their image of a transmigrator had a lot more control, cool and collected.

But before they could continue their thoughts Menchi spoke. "Why do you need a teacher?"

The boy looked at Menchi confused before speaking.

"Knowing about the principles and techniques of Nen from TV is not enough to learn them. You need real guidance." The boy spoke to Menchi like she was a transmigrator.

"TV? What channel has Nen? Is that how my brother learned about Nen?!" Menchi was interested.

Though Menchi was further confusing everybody, and the boy didn't have a good explanation.

"Did your brother teach you Nen?" The boy asked Menchi.

And she didn't mind the boy not answering her question.

"Yes! He's really smart, he knows everything." Menchi spoke, full of admiration.

At this point the boy and the youths didn't believe Menchi was a transmigrator, but rather the real Menchi.

Though they were suspicious of this brother. But when they thought further, why wouldn't this brother come to the hunter exam?

He must already be a hunter overlooking her exam, or secretly disguised within the crowd.

Similar to the original series, with Killua the younger brother taking the exam, and his older brother Illumi disguised watching over him secretly.

So they all studied each participant trying to find a disguise to no avail.

Still they both communicated for the remainder of the exam until they reached a tall and wide staircase that seemed to go on forever. Similar to the original story, with an addition to a gate at the end.

A hundred participants remained, all the Nen users and three of the youths included.

But unlike the original story the end of the tunnel wasn't the wilderness. Rather they seemed to still be underground or in a building at the very least.

Waiting for a few minutes as a break and for the tunnel gate to close. Allowing a few stragglers to make it to the next exam.

A new examiner appeared explaining the next exam that consisted of two stages or two rooms.

Ahead of them were dozens of doors, and after the examiner explained everything the exam began.

Though people hesitated to go first, except that was wasting time. But a few people over confident and actually confident went first.

Those people were the Nen users, Menchi included. Not to mention the over confident bunch.

Each chose a room and inside was a screen and another door.

Approaching the screen Menchi, she saw a timer for one hour and red a prompt asking for her to find the key to the door ahead.

Though that confused her because there was nothing in the room.

She approached the door thinking it could all be a trick. But the door wouldn't budge, even when she used an unnatural amount of strength.

Returning to the screen she tapped it but nothing happened making her frown. Not understanding what she could even do.

Taking a moment to look around and study everything with grammar attention. One thing began to stand out after studying everything. One wall had portions that could be pressed in slightly, only half a centimeter but it was a start.

But after finding every pushable portion, and pressing them each, nothing happened.

Making her think that there must be a pattern to discover. But after twenty minutes of not finding one, she didn't know what to do.

She was even beginning to think that this room was the only room and the answer was to do nothing.

But she didn't quit silently thinking of what to do, even studying the door she came through.

Eventually she just sat down thinking and looking around, having truly no clue.

But after doing nothing for an additional ten minutes. She heard something.

Click.

The door had definitely unlocked, even though it wasn't opened. Menchi stood up and opened the door without a problem.

She was still puzzled but continued forward nonetheless.

With twenty minutes remaining, she took in her new surroundings. The room was bigger, but there was still a door ahead with a screen beside it like last time.

Looking at the screen her timer changed, gaining an additional hour.

The prompt read, patience and calm was the key, but what's the lock?

Menchi understood the condition for the first section. Don't move for ten minutes. In a hopeless situation with time running out, not moving was the last option.

Looking at the door ahead of her she realized it didn't have a handle.

Inspecting the room again, she realized two walls now had pressable sections as well as a third door.

A door that was beside the one she came from. Evident that another person was supposed to join her.

Though those two doors also didn't have handles, meaning there was no way back.

That gave her an idea! Or rather a brief opportunity. Menchi thought maybe the answer was in the previous room.

While she couldn't reopen her own room, the other room could when the next person came through. Maybe just maybe that could lead to the answer.

Though she still inspected the two walls with pressable sections. Though like last time she came to no conclusion.

But eventually the other door opened and it was nobody she recognized.

She was confident it wasn't any of the participants, unless it was someone's Nen ability.

Menchi didn't know who entered the room beside her because she had entered before that person had entered.

Despite this she held the person's door open while speaking. "Who are you?"

"Huh? What do you mean, I'm number 63." The person, a woman in her twenties, responded by pointing to her number, given to all participants when joining the first exam.

"That's not right, number 63 wasn't you. Did you steal it or are you a part of the hunters organization?" Menchi asked.

This left the woman stunned.

"What are you talking about?..What the hell?! This doesn't even matter, what's the next test?" The woman question.

"The time for the last stage should have ended a few minutes ago, whoever was in that room should have been eliminated. So you are from the organization acting as a filler, right?" Menchi didn't let it go.

And the woman was annoyed.

"Fine you win alright, I'm a hunter. But you still need to pass this test. So let's do that, no?" The woman gave in.

"If you're a hunter you should already know what to do, so what's the answer?" Menchi asked, still holding the door open.

Which the woman glanced at.

"Well it seems you already know what to do." The woman countered.

"Good, since there's two of us, I'll hold the door and you get the lock." Menchi spoke, watching the woman go back into the room and open the door to the entrance. Revealing a now empty area, with only the examiner and a few other participants.

"The lock is the past, congratulations for passing the second exam." But Menchi was skeptical.

Didn't this mean she didn't even need to take the test to begin with.

In fact nothing hinted at not taking the test, they wanted you to take the test exactly how Menchi did.

But Menchi could have actually exited the test after passing the first section. Because the doors of the first section were linked. When one was unlocked the other was as well, so she could have left then.

Huffing, she followed the lady and stood among the dozen others.

Slowly more and more people joined them until the hundred original participants became thirty. All the Nen users and all three youths.

It was time for the third exam, and all the doors of the second exam opened, even the handle-less door of the last room, with no one inside except for the middle door and the new examiner stepped forward with a mischievous grin.

Without any explanation. The examiner spoke. "The third examination begins now."

With that, all the hunters went through the middle door and closed it. Not to be seen again.

Leaving the participants to explore each room, Menchi quickly realized the first two rooms were all the same.

Beyond that was a room with stairs to the next floor, and that floor was a maze.

A maze with many weird rooms, rooms that could be locked.

There was a reason for this because many were bed rooms, foreshadowing a long exam.

Other rooms had food, other weapons, and some money. With only one room without a lock with a ladder to the third floor.

With the fourth floor turning into a mirror maze, again with locked rooms and unlocked ladder rooms.

The maze changed with variations for ten floors, each taking a day to pass through.

Some people didn't find food rooms or bedrooms for days. Some setting traps inside them and at the ladder room. Some worked together, like Menchi joined by her earlier companion from the first exam.

Together they passed the third exam and were greeted by the sky. They were in fact on top of a building.

With a half a dozen participants awaiting the final examiner who continued to greet incoming participants.
