Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: Dragon vs. Demon

*Naruto: The Dragonoid's Legacy

---

The forest clearing had gone completely silent except for the sound of energy crackling around Naruto's transformed body. His wings spread wide, casting pink-and-gold shadows across the stunned faces of his friends.

"Naruto..." Sasuke stared up at him, the cursed mark slowly receding as shock overrode everything else. "What... what ARE you?"

"It's a long story," Naruto said, his voice carrying that dual quality now—still his own, but with an undertone of something ancient and powerful. He kept his eyes on the transformed Gaara. "I'll explain later. Right now, I need to stop him before someone gets killed."

"**NARUTO UZUMAKI!**" Shukaku's voice boomed from Gaara's body, the massive sand tanuki focusing all its attention on him. "**I CAN SMELL IT ON YOU! POWER! DELICIOUS POWER! MOTHER WANTS TO TASTE YOUR BLOOD!**"

"Yeah, I'm getting real tired of people wanting to kill me," Naruto muttered. Then louder, he called out: "Gaara! I know you can hear me in there! Fight it! Don't let the beast control you!"

For just a moment, Gaara's voice broke through, small and terrified. "I... can't... it's too strong... Mother is... hungry..."

Naruto's golden eyes softened with understanding. He knew that feeling—the terror of having something powerful and violent sealed inside you, constantly clawing for control.

*The difference is,* the Kyuubi rumbled in his mind, *you have people who care about you. That boy has nothing but fear and hatred.*

*Then I'll show him there's another way!*

Naruto crouched slightly, his wings flaring. "Everyone, get back! This is gonna get messy!"

"Wait!" Neji stepped forward, his Byakugan still active and trying to make sense of the energy surrounding Naruto. "What's your plan? You can't just—"

"**DIE!**" Shukaku's massive claw came crashing down again, this time aimed at all of them.

Naruto shot upward, his wings propelling him into the air with incredible speed. He grabbed the sand claw mid-swing and, with a grunt of effort, **twisted**.

The entire sand arm rotated, throwing Shukaku off balance. The massive beast stumbled backward, crashing through several trees.

"Whoa..." Kiba's jaw dropped. "Did he just... manhandle a Tailed Beast?"

"This is impossible," Neji breathed. "That amount of power... it's not chakra. It's something else entirely. Something that defies everything I know about the human body."

Sasuke's Sharingan spun frantically, trying to copy or at least understand Naruto's movements, but the energy patterns were completely foreign. "Dammit... what kind of training did Jiraiya put you through?!"

In the air, Naruto hovered on his dragon wings, assessing the situation. The transformed Gaara was massive—about thirty feet tall—and radiating the One-Tail's corrupted chakra. But compared to Milim's memories that sometimes filtered through to him, compared to the power he could potentially unleash...

*This isn't even a real challenge,* the dragonoid part of him whispered. *I could end this in one hit.*

*No!* Naruto shook his head. *Gaara's still in there! If I go all out, I might kill him!*

"**COWARD! COME DOWN AND FIGHT!**" Shukaku roared, sending waves of sand shooting toward Naruto like spears.

Naruto weaved through them effortlessly, his enhanced speed making the attacks seem to move in slow motion. "I'm not here to fight you, Shukaku! I'm here to help Gaara!"

"**HELP?! HAHAHAHA!**" The beast's laughter was manic. "**NO ONE HELPS GAARA! EVERYONE HATES GAARA! EVERYONE FEARS GAARA! THAT'S WHY HE HAS ME! THAT'S WHY HE NEEDS MOTHER!**"

"That's not true!" Naruto shouted back, diving toward the beast. He had to get through to Gaara somehow. "I know what it's like! I know what it's like to have everyone look at you with fear and hatred! To be alone! But it doesn't have to be that way!"

He landed on Shukaku's arm and ran up toward the head, leaving pink-and-gold footprints of energy in his wake.

"**YOU KNOW NOTHING!**" A wave of sand erupted from Shukaku's body, trying to swat Naruto away.

But Naruto's wings flared, and he shot through the sand barrier like it was paper. His fist, wreathed in dragonoid energy, slammed into the beast's mask-like face.

**CRACK!**

The impact sent shockwaves through the entire forest, bending trees and creating a wind blast that forced the watching Genin to brace themselves.

"Did he just... punch a Tailed Beast in the face?" Shikamaru said faintly. "This is way above our pay grade."

"Youthful!" Lee's eyes were sparkling despite the danger. "Naruto-kun's flames of youth burn so brightly! I must train harder!"

Shukaku staggered back, a crack forming in its sand exterior. Through the crack, they could see Gaara's body merged with the sand, his eyes wide and unfocused.

"Gaara!" Naruto called out. "Listen to me! You're not alone! You don't have to let it control you!"

"Shut up..." Gaara's voice was weak. "You don't understand... no one understands..."

"I DO!" Naruto landed on a nearby tree branch, his wings folding slightly. His golden eyes met Gaara's pain-filled ones. "I have the Nine-Tails sealed inside me! The Kyuubi! I know what it's like to be a Jinchuuriki! To have a monster inside you that everyone fears!"

The revelation hit the clearing like a bomb.

"The... the Nine-Tails?!" Kiba stumbled backward. "Naruto has the NINE-TAILS?!"

"That's why the villagers..." Shikamaru's eyes widened with sudden understanding. "That's why they always looked at him like that..."

Neji's fists clenched. "A Jinchuuriki. And now this... dragonoid transformation. What else is he hiding?"

But Sasuke just stared, his mind racing. *The Nine-Tails. A dragonoid. And he's still... Naruto. Still the same idiot who never gives up. How?*

Gaara's eyes focused on Naruto, really seeing him for the first time. "You... have a beast inside you too?"

"Yeah." Naruto's expression softened. "But I learned something important. The beast doesn't define who we are. WE do. Our choices. Our bonds. The people we protect."

"**LIES!**" Shukaku roared. "**HE LIES, GAARA! POWER IS ALL THAT MATTERS! DESTRUCTION IS ALL THAT MATTERS!**"

"No!" Naruto's voice cut through the beast's ravings. "What matters is having people who acknowledge you! People who care about you!" He pointed at Temari and Kankuro, who were watching from the treeline. "Your siblings are terrified right now—but they didn't run away! They're still here!"

Temari gasped. It was true. Despite their fear, despite knowing they should flee, they'd stayed to watch over their brother.

"And you know what else?" Naruto grinned, that familiar smile breaking through his transformed features. "I acknowledge you, Gaara! You're strong! You've been fighting alone for so long, and you're still standing! That takes guts!"

Something in Gaara's expression cracked. Tears began forming in his eyes. "You... acknowledge... me?"

"Hell yeah, I do!" Naruto's wings spread wide. "So stop letting that sand tanuki control you! You're Gaara of the Sand! Not Shukaku's puppet!"

"**SILENCE!**" Shukaku's sand formed into a massive sphere around Gaara, protecting him. "**I WON'T LET YOU TAKE HIM! HE'S MINE!**"

Naruto's eyes hardened with determination. "Sorry, Shukaku, but you don't own him. Time to go back to sleep!"

He shot forward, his body becoming a pink-and-gold blur. His fist pulled back, gathering energy that made the air itself ripple with power.

"Pervy Sage taught me this next part!" Naruto shouted. "It's called focusing your energy into a single point! **DRAGON FIST!**"

His punch connected with the sand sphere.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then the entire sphere **exploded** outward, sand scattering in every direction like a detonated bomb. The shockwave flattened trees in a hundred-meter radius.

When the dust cleared, Gaara's transformation was completely dispelled. The boy fell from the air, unconscious and reverting to his normal form.

Naruto caught him gently with his wings, descending slowly to the ground.

"Got you," he said softly.

He laid Gaara down carefully on the grass. The Sand ninja was breathing—exhausted and chakra-depleted, but alive.

Temari and Kankuro rushed over, their expressions a mixture of relief and wariness.

"Is he...?" Temari asked.

"He's fine. Just exhausted." Naruto looked at them seriously. "Take care of him. He needs people who understand him. Who don't treat him like a weapon."

"Who are you to tell us—" Kankuro started, but Temari put a hand on his arm.

"Thank you," she said quietly. "For not killing him. For... understanding."

Naruto nodded, then turned to face his friends.

The group of Konoha Genin stood in a loose semicircle, all staring at him with varying expressions of shock, awe, and confusion.

"So..." Naruto scratched the back of his head, a nervous gesture that looked odd with his horns and wings. "I guess we should talk, huh?"

"Talk?" Kiba's voice was almost shrill. "TALK?! You just revealed you have the Nine-Tails, transformed into some kind of dragon-thing, and punched a Tailed Beast into submission! And you want to TALK?!"

"When you put it like that, it sounds really weird..." Naruto muttered.

Neji stepped forward, his Byakugan deactivated now. "What are you, Naruto? And don't say you're just a Genin who trained hard. We deserve the truth."

Naruto looked at each of them—Neji, Shikamaru, Kiba, Lee, Shino, Choji. Friends and rivals. People he'd grown up with. And Sasuke, his teammate, still staring with those calculating Sharingan eyes.

*They deserve to know,* the Kyuubi said. *You revealed yourself to save them. Might as well commit.*

Naruto took a deep breath and let his wings fade away. The horns receded. His eyes shifted back to blue, though flecks of gold still swirled in them occasionally.

"Okay, here's the truth. During my training with Jiraiya, something... happened. I met—well, kind of met—this being called Milim Nava. She's a Demon Lord from another dimension or timeline or something. I didn't really understand all of it." He waved his hand vaguely. "Anyway, she said I was her descendant—like, super distant—and she gave me her power. Made me into a dragonoid."

"A dragonoid," Shikamaru repeated flatly. "You're telling me you're part dragon now."

"Pretty much, yeah!"

"This is insane," Kiba muttered. "Absolutely insane."

"But it explains so much," Neji said thoughtfully. "Your speed during the match. Your strength. The way my Gentle Fist barely affected you. You weren't just using chakra—you were using this dragonoid energy."

"Magicules," Naruto corrected. "That's what the Kyuubi calls it. It's like chakra but different. More... raw?"

Sasuke finally spoke, his voice quiet but intense. "How strong are you? Really?"

Naruto met his eyes. "I don't know. I haven't gone all out yet. But..." He looked at his hands. "I feel like I could level a mountain if I really tried. Maybe more."

The group went silent, processing that information.

"And the Nine-Tails?" Shikamaru asked. "You've really had it sealed inside you this whole time?"

"Since I was born. It's why the adults in the village hate me. Why they look at me like I'm a monster." Naruto's expression became sad. "But I'm not the Nine-Tails. I'm me. Naruto Uzumaki. I just happen to have a grumpy fox living in my gut."

*Grumpy?!* the Kyuubi growled indignantly.

Lee suddenly stepped forward and put a hand on Naruto's shoulder, tears streaming down his face. "Naruto-kun! To carry such burdens and still smile! To face such hatred and still protect others! Your youth burns brighter than anyone's!"

"Uh... thanks, Lee?"

"This is troublesome," Shikamaru sighed. "Do you have any idea how complicated this makes everything? A Jinchuuriki who's also some kind of interdimensional dragon-person? The political ramifications alone..."

"I know it's complicated," Naruto said. "That's why I was hiding it. But I couldn't let you guys get hurt. You're my friends."

"Friends who you didn't trust with the truth," Neji pointed out.

"It wasn't about trust!" Naruto protested. "It was about keeping you safe! The less you knew, the better!"

"And now?" Sasuke's eyes bore into him.

"Now... I guess the cat's out of the bag. Or the dragon. Whatever." Naruto grinned weakly. "So what do you guys think? Still want to be friends with the village's monster?"

For a long moment, no one spoke.

Then Choji pulled out a bag of chips and offered them to Naruto. "You saved my life just now. That sand attack would've hit me if you hadn't stopped it. Monster or not, you're still Naruto."

"Choji..." Naruto's eyes misted slightly.

"He's right," Shikamaru said, though he looked pained to admit it. "You're still the same troublesome idiot you've always been. You just have flashier powers now."

"Indeed!" Lee gave a thumbs up. "A true shinobi is defined by his actions, not his circumstances of birth! You are youthful, Naruto-kun!"

Kiba crossed his arms. "I mean, it's weird as hell. But you did just save our butts. So... yeah. We're cool."

"Your secrets are your own," Shino said in his quiet way. "You have proven yourself an ally."

Neji was silent for a longer moment, then nodded slowly. "You defeated me fairly. You saved us from Gaara. And you carry burdens I can't even imagine. I may not fully understand what you are, but... I acknowledge your strength."

Naruto looked at each of them, emotion welling up in his chest. These people—they knew his secrets now, knew what he was, and they still...

"Thanks, guys," he said, his voice thick. "You have no idea what that means to me."

"Don't get sappy on us," Sasuke said, but his tone was less harsh than usual. "We still have an invasion to deal with. Can you sense what's happening in the village?"

Naruto closed his eyes, extending his enhanced senses. What he felt made his blood run cold.

"The Hokage... he's fighting someone powerful. Really powerful. And his chakra is fading."

"Orochimaru," Sasuke spat the name. "That bastard disguised himself as the Kazekage."

"We need to get back!" Naruto started to move, but Shikamaru grabbed his arm.

"Wait. Think about this strategically. If you go back transformed, the whole village will see you. Is that what you want?"

Naruto hesitated. "But the Hokage—"

"Is fighting with the ANBU and Jonin backing him up," Shikamaru said firmly. "Our job right now is to secure the Sand siblings and get them back to the village. We can help with the general invasion forces."

"He's right," Neji said. "The Hokage wouldn't want you to risk exposing yourself for him."

Naruto's fists clenched in frustration. They were right, but it felt wrong to hold back when someone he cared about was in danger.

*The old man is stronger than you think,* the Kyuubi said. *Trust in him. And besides, if you reveal your full power to the entire village now, in the middle of an invasion, they'll panic. Fear will turn to hatred. Is that what you want?*

"Fine," Naruto said reluctantly. "We secure the area here first. But if things get really bad, I'm going in, secret or not."

"Fair enough," Shikamaru agreed.

Suddenly, Pakkun—Kakashi's ninken—appeared on a nearby branch.

"There you kids are! Kakashi sent me to find you. The invasion is being pushed back, but we need all available shinobi to help with cleanup. And—" He paused, sniffing the air and looking at Naruto. "Kid, why do you smell like ancient magic and dragon scales?"

"It's... complicated."

"Right. Well, bring the Sand kids and get back to the village. And Naruto? Kakashi says to keep your 'special training results' under wraps for now."

"So he knows?"

"Jiraiya briefed him. Sort of. The white-haired pervert was super vague about it, which just made Kakashi more curious." Pakkun shook his head. "Anyway, get moving!"

The dog disappeared in a puff of smoke.

Naruto looked at the unconscious Gaara, then at Temari and Kankuro. "What are you going to do? Your village just tried to invade ours."

"We were following orders," Temari said defensively. "But... after what you said to Gaara, after what you showed us... I don't know anymore."

"Come with us," Naruto said suddenly. "Back to the village. Surrender peacefully. Maybe we can figure this out without more fighting."

"You want us to surrender to the village we just attacked?" Kankuro asked incredulously.

"I want to stop more people from dying!" Naruto shot back. "This invasion was stupid! Look at what it's cost! Your Kazekage is probably dead, Gaara almost got killed, and for what?!"

Temari and Kankuro exchanged glances.

"He's right," Temari said quietly. "This whole thing was... Father made a mistake."

"Then come on. We'll sort this out together."

As the group began making their way back to Konoha, Sasuke fell into step beside Naruto.

"This power of yours," he said quietly. "Can you teach it to me?"

"It doesn't work like that. It's not a jutsu. It's... what I am now."

Sasuke's jaw clenched. "Then I need to find my own power. Something that can match yours."

"Sasuke—"

"Don't." His Sharingan flared briefly. "You're not the only one with demons to fight, Naruto. I have my own path to follow."

There was something dark in Sasuke's tone that worried Naruto, but before he could press further, they emerged from the forest to see Konoha in the distance.

Smoke rose from various locations, but the three-headed snake was gone. The sounds of battle had diminished significantly.

"Looks like we're winning," Kiba observed.

But Naruto's enhanced senses picked up something that made his heart sink.

The Hokage's chakra signature... it was so faint now. Flickering like a dying candle.

"Old man..." he whispered.

As they approached the village gates, the full scope of the damage became clear. Buildings were destroyed. Wounded shinobi were everywhere. And in the distance, on top of a rooftop, Naruto could see a barrier flickering and fading.

Inside that barrier, he knew, the Hokage had made his final stand.

*Please be okay,* Naruto prayed. *Please...*

But even as he hoped, deep down, he knew.

Today, Konoha had survived an invasion.

But the cost would be devastating.
