Chapter 4 - Whispers of the Past

"Nothing. I just saw someone I know," Ding Wei replied.

The man's long fingers tapped slowly on his leg, as if he was smiling softly.

"You know this little fellow?"

Ding Wei: "Huh?"

He paused for a few seconds before realizing the young uncle was talking about the same person he had just seen.

"Yes, he... He's the one from the Rong family before…" Ding Wei hesitated, unable to bring himself to say the words "fake young master."

The Rong Xingyu he had just seen looked completely different from before. Ding Wei couldn't help but doubt his own eyes.

Surprisingly, the young uncle also knew about the engagement that had been arranged with him by the elders.

Ding Wei scratched the back of his head, feeling awkward. "I don't like Rong Xingyu. Even without that engagement, I would have broken it off. I like someone who looks… obedient…"

But before he could finish, the image of Rong Xingyu outside the hair salon flashed in his mind, his eyes that was red like a frightened little rabbit… Ding Wei shivered and cursed under his breath.

He suddenly felt a strange tug in his heart. He vaguely remembered hearing that Rong Xingyu had secretly liked him. Could breaking off the engagement have made Rong Xingyu so upset that even his ears were red from crying?

Ignoring Ding Wei's shifting and complicated expression, the man looked in the direction Rong Xingyu had just left. Dark emotions briefly stirred in his eyes, but they quickly returned to calm.

Only the driver, who had accidentally glanced in the rearview mirror, turned pale and kept his head down, not daring to look again.

Rong Xingyu had no idea about all of this.

The bus stop was still some distance from his new home. In his previous life, Rong Xingyu whose poor had never taken taxis. After getting off, he walked slowly along the sidewalk.

This area was a small scenic villa district, showing that the Rong family had kept some last measure of tolerance for the troublesome original Rong Xingyu.

Unfortunately, the original Rong Xingyu hadn't appreciated it. Combined with the manipulations of those people with ulterior motives, he eventually cooled the hearts of those who truly cared for him, leading to his miserable end.

Rong Xingyu clenched his fists. For his own life, he would stay as far away as possible from the main character and the people around him.

A business van sped past behind Rong Xingyu.

Instinctively, he glanced back but saw nothing and quickly returned his gaze forward.

"What are you looking at, Brother Rong?"

An assistant-like figure in the car leaned toward the window curiously. Across from him, a young man put his sunglasses back on, showing only the sharply defined lower half of his face.

The handsome young man shook his head calmly. "I must have been mistaken."

...

"No way I'm wrong! That's Rong Xingyu, right?"

"Impossible! Even after cosmetic surgery, recovery can't be this fast…"

"…"

Rong Xingyu sat in his seat while still hearing whispers coming from different corners of the classroom.
