Elisabeth's POV

The air in the room turned to ice.

Cathrine's expression shifted, clearly caught off guard that Gordon wasn't buying into her dramatic display. Candace went rigid beside her, obviously lost now that their plan wasn't working. Even Alana's clenched hands relaxed a fraction, though fury still blazed in her dark eyes. My pulse hammered against my ribs, but I gave a silent nod, smart enough not to challenge what was happening.

Gordon didn't waste time with explanations. He spun around and headed straight for Jefferson's study, leaving us no choice but to trail behind him through the suffocating tension.

Minutes later, the four of us sat arranged in Jefferson's private study like defendants awaiting judgment. The atmosphere was so thick with hostility you could cut it with a blade. We exchanged venomous glares while being too smart to actually speak. Gordon positioned himself against the wall, arms folded, radiating the kind of deadly calm that made your blood freeze.
