The words Candace had just spoken sliced through the air like ice, and Alana was already rising from her seat, every muscle in her body coiled tight. Her voice dropped to a dangerous whisper as she asked, "What did you just call us?"
Meanwhile, my thoughts were still reeling from the revelation Candace had casually dropped like a grenade into our conversation. Jefferson had been engaged to her. They had been close enough to marriage, and now she was back. The questions crashed over me in waves, each one more urgent than the last.
What had gone wrong between them? Why had she returned now? And that kiss we had shared suddenly felt like it carried more weight, more meaning than I had allowed myself to acknowledge.
Candace stood there with that insufferable smile, watching me process everything. She clearly enjoyed seeing me struggle to piece together the puzzle she had presented.
