Lilian's POV
The professional voice on the other end made it clear someone medical was speaking. My stomach dropped as I pressed the phone closer to my ear. "Gavin, what's going on? Where are you right now?"
"What do you mean? I'm at work, obviously," my brother answered too fast, his voice strained.
"That's not true," I pushed back. "Are you at the hospital? I definitely heard someone talking about changing bandages."
"No way. Why would I be there? I'm totally fine," he insisted. "Look, I've got to run." The line went dead before I could say another word.
He was lying through his teeth, but when Gavin didn't want to share something, no amount of questioning would crack him.
Worry gnawing at me, I started making calls until someone finally told me the truth. He'd been working as a stunt double to scrape together cash.
