Chapter 17 - Shadows Within*

The earthquake subsided, leaving behind an eerie silence. Mia, Kai, and Amara stood frozen, the only sound the distant screams and cries from the school.

Mia's eyes were wide with horror. "What have I done?" she whispered, her voice trembling.

Kai's grip on her shoulders tightened. "It's not your fault, Mia. You didn't mean to-"

But Mia wasn't listening. She was lost in her own mind, replaying the events of the past few days. The dreams, the powers, the Michelsons... was she truly on the right side?

A cold wind swept through the clearing, carrying with it the whispers of the Michelsons. "Ours, ours, ours..."

Mia's heart skipped a beat. She felt a shiver run down her spine.

"What if... what if I'm not who I think I am?" she whispered, her voice barely audible.

Kai and Amara exchanged worried glances. "Mia, what are you talking about?" Kai asked, his voice gentle.

But Mia wasn't sure. She felt a darkness stirring within her, a darkness that seemed to be growing stronger by the minute.

"I feel it," she whispered, her eyes locked on Kai's. "A darkness inside me. What if it's true? What if I'm meant to be evil?"

Amara's eyes widened. "Mia, no. You're not evil. You're-"

But Mia cut her off, her voice rising. "How do you know? You don't know what I'm capable of. What if I'm just a monster waiting to happen?"

The trees seemed to loom over her, their branches casting long, ominous shadows on the ground. The wind whispered secrets in her ear, and Mia felt herself leaning in, drawn to the darkness.

And then, she saw it. A figure, standing just beyond the trees. Watching her.

Mia's heart froze. "Who's there?" she called out, her voice shaking.

The figure didn't move. But Mia knew she wasn't alone.

Suddenly, the Michelsons' words echoed in her mind. "You're one of us, Mia. You'll always be one of us."

A seed of doubt had been planted, and it was growing roots. Was Mia on the right side, or was she just a pawn in a much larger game?
