HUH?

What is this? Some love triangle? I told myself I would walk away and go to my room, but that was a lie. I stayed. Of course I stayed, who wouldn't.

I moved closer, pressing myself behind the pillar, holding my breath.

Tyra spoke next, her voice barely more than a murmur.

"Maxwell… I can't."

He tilted his head to the side. The playful charm he had arrived with was gone, replaced by something worn and tired.

"You can't," he said quietly, "or you won't?"

"I love him," she whispered, still refusing to look at him.

"And me?" He didn't look away from her, not even for a second. "Do you feel nothing for me at all?"

She shook her head, biting down on her lip. I had never seen her like this. Soft. Stripped of all that sharpness she carried. Something about his presence unraveled her, and for a moment she looked so much like Christina that my chest tightened. The same gentleness. The same stubborn silence.
