Chapter 37 - Arcana's Curiosity

If there's one thing that immortality takes away from someone's life, it is the interest said immortal has for things that are happening in the outside, the mortal world, as those that transcends the life of anyone else will find themselves gradually getting used to the dullness of life, the times of loss ever so often being far greater than the fleeting moments of gains.

This truth, applies to this maiden as well, yet despite living through the entire, long history of the Kyrios Empire, there's this one thing that kept her sane, that kept her life a little bit more colorful than the gray lives other long-lived existences within the world are living.

Curiosity, the intense desire to learn about all things regardless of what field of knowledge it is, scientific or mystical, doesn't matter, that great thirst for knowledge itself keeps her going even after the countless years of civilization's rise and fall that she had witnessed.

And that very curiosity became the reason for her no longer holding the young man in front of her in contempt, as in place of this previous negative opinion towards him, that showcase of grand, sharp intent startles her so much, to the point that she can barely compose herself as she stood there in silence, seemingly allowing him to speak now.

While unaware of the reason for the sudden change in her attitude, Argus himself is well aware that it is now his chance to speak to this ever-so-aloof guide that holds millennia long knowledge of the history of the great Kyrios Empire, something that is of interest to him, even with his identity as sole person who managed to touch upon the border of the strength that far transcends the divine.

As for what that knowledge is that he seeks?

To his own words, it is perhaps, the greatest threat that this world is about to face, even including the eventual encounter of this world's denizens with the great beings known as cultivators.

This is a lot considering those thoughts come from the being who reached the status of the strongest sage to ever exist, and if there's one thing that concerns said individual more than the inevitable crashing of the space his world is located in with the grand domain where he learned to be a cultivator and traversed as one, it is the greatest threat that just accelerates this process of crashing that should've happened hundreds, if not thousands of years earlier than when it should've actually happened.

'Devourers…'

Beings of insatiable hunger that go beyond logic, beings that transcend the limitation of space as they became capable of devouring even space itself once their strength had grown to greater heights, beings that were once singlehandedly responsible for the near extinction of life within this world that he was born in.

'Yes, if there's anyone in the empire who has even the tiniest bit of an idea regarding where those things are located or whether there are signs of them at all, it has to be Lady Arcana.'

Argus thought to himself as he completely shoves the ethereal lady's previous manners to the back of his mind, thinking that this matter is of far greater concern for him to act too petty just because someone decides to act their temper in front of him.

"Lady Arcana, are you willing to listen to my words now?"

Still, acting with respect for an "elder", the young man decided to ask once more, only to meet with the nod of agreement from the lady, who immediately opens her mouth once again as she recalls something she wants to know as well.

"One question in exchange for another, and since I had been rude to you, you can go first, young man."

Gone from the face of the ethereal maiden now is the frown that once adds a bit of negative element to her beauty, now replaced with what is possibly an attempt for a smile, a half-baked attempt at that as the corner of her pink lips barely curves upwards, and her face is making it look like despite the strength, power and ability that is beyond any normal person, it is still taking her all just to maintain such expression on her gorgeous face.

Hearing the reply from the ethereal lady as she sat upon the chair near her before gesturing for him to sit on one as well, the young man shows his own smile, one that is an easy matter for him, as he sat down as well, immediately going to the topic as he doesn't see any reason to dilly-dally in front of the person in front of him.

"Lady Arcana, this might sound a little bit weird. Is there anything that comes to mind about cities, towns, or even villages disappearing bit by bit, then all of a sudden, it was as if nothing existed in that place at all, or something related, no matter how far into the past it is?"

As she heard the question that came out of the young man's mouth, the lady, Arcana, couldn't help but be taken aback, as it was not quite the kind of question she was expecting from a young person like him.

Truth being told, despite the presence and intent that was unconsciously oozing out of him previously, the lady still sees this young man as someone of the new generation, someone youthful and vigorous, and quite possibly, just like every "guest" that she had all throughout the years, is interested in her as well.

It wasn't all too far-fetched a claim, as well, given that she possesses the kind of beauty that makes every single individual in the empire, no, even beyond the empire, jealous, to the point that perhaps those noble women of powerful clans and families will wage war on each other for the sake of acquiring such an appearance.

And yet, despite this beauty that even she herself is proud of, she couldn't help but get confused for a moment, before her mind starts to go on and recall her memories of the past in an attempt to search for something that is similar to the situation he is inquiring about.

Initially, the effort on her part is solely due to the fact that she wants to satiate her own curiosity as well; this question of his being answered will allow her to be granted a chance to ask him regarding the intent she felt from him previously.

But now that she starts paying attention to things, the question that was once just a mere means to an end is now a matter of interest to her as well, as the more she searched her mind for answers, the more she felt like there were way too many matches for his query than what she had initially expected.

And that change in her expression, from the rush to answer the question, the sudden confusion in the midst of this rush, the panic, then eventually, the dread as she starts opening her eyes something that is witnessed in its entirety by the young man in front of her, expressions that makes it so that his conclusion doesn't even require for him to hear the answer to the ethereal beauty's question anymore.

"There are… a lot of those incidents, young man…"
