She was going to get married? She was not just getting married, but getting married to the man who had assisted her cousin with his influence, to torture her in her past life. A man who had expressed his hatred for her in the past. She had taken her last breath with him looking at her with disdain.
She sighed in exhaustion. There were a lot of mysteries to uncover. First, there was Biyu Lin, acting strange. Strange enough to let Yang Yang marry her man. Then Youchang Chen.
Her head began to throb. Tiredly, she made her way to her room. She flopped on her bed. Her first day reincarnated didn't go as she would have loved it to. It was already hectic, but she still had a long way to go.
She needed to find a way out. She could not marry Youchang Chen. That man was arrogant, ruthless and violent. Besides, she wasn't ready to marry yet. At this time of her life, she wasn't even done with university. And if she even were to consider marriage, it would be with a man she loved, or at least a responsible man.
Besides, she had not yet taken back her parents' assets from her aunt's hold. She had not yet finalized her very important deal, and yet there were still lots of mysteries to unravel.
She turned her head to the windows as she yawned. It was evening now and her room had begun to turn dark. The abandoned part of the house where her room was located had very poor lighting. The garden situated below her window would usually begin to cast shadows on the ground by this time. The shadows that had served as her camouflage when she ran away and hid from the torture of her aunt and her daughters.
Thinking about this, she sighed, but then a light bulb lit in her head. She shot up from her bed and walked towards the window. She looked down. As expected, shadows had begun to form as the sky darkened. Shadows that could easily conceal any movement.
That was it. She would run away! She just had to wait until the household was asleep. They barely visited her part of the house, but then things were changing in this her new life, so she had to be careful. The night was too young now, so she would wait for a few hours before using the cover of the shadows to slip away, or she could be detected when she passes by their windows.
She suddenly touched her chin in a bid to recall something. Then, she squatted by the side of her little bed and lifted one of its edges. Dipping her hand in, it appeared once again, holding some Yuan notes. She began to count. These were her life savings. There were times when she had worked part-time without the knowledge of Shujia or her daughters, before she was suddenly fired. And the time when she had helped a certain farmer plant seeds for a little sum of money.
But no matter how meagerly the money looked, it should be able to sustain her for the time being. She tucked it into her pocket as she made her way to her wardrobe. After some shuffling, she lifted a small threadbare bag and began stuffing equally threadbare clothes into it. She was leaving now, but in a few years when she would be independent and capable, she would come back to reclaim everything her Shujia Lin and the Lin family took from her parents.
When it was dark enough, she would leave for a village near the countryside where she was sure not just Shujia Lin, but the Lin family as a whole would never find her. There she would start a small farm and sell the vegetables she planted and the animals she reared. Or she would start a small tailor's shop. She had heard cloth making was not a very complicated thing to learn.
She would build a quiet life for herself. Maybe she would marry a gentle man someday and have a family of her own. And when she was finally independent, she would return and reclaim everything the Lin family had taken from her parents. Her parents' legacy would never die.
She zipped up her bag and looked out the window once again. The night had gotten a little darker, but not dark enough. She began to pace. She could faintly hear the sound of Xingyi Lin complaining about something to her mother, and could see the faint light of a bulb through the crack under her door. They were not asleep yet. She had to wait a little more.
After pacing for almost an hour, the house finally became silent. The bulbs were turned off. Everyone seemed to be asleep, and the night was deep enough to give her cover. Stealthily, she began to make her way to the window.
Her legs dangled from the window, and then she jumped down. For the first time, she was grateful she had been given a room at the ground floor. She could not imagine jumping from the second or third floor. Using the shadows of trees and flowers in the garden, she began to make her way to the gate. Once she stepped out of that gate, then she could escape an unwanted marriage. She walked stealthily, barely making a sound. She carefully avoided stepping on the dry leaves scattered across the ground as she passed by Shujia and Xingyi Lin's windows. But then, when she was just underneath Biyu Lin's window, the lights were suddenly turned on. Her heart skipped a beat.
She shut her eyes in horror, her heart pounding wildly in her chest. It was going to be over if she was caught. She would be sent back to her room, and worse still, they would make sure there was no room for her to escape again. Then she would be married off to her nemesis. Just as she prepared to be caught, she heard voices.
