Chapter 7 - A better man for Biyu?

She froze. She knew those voices. She could recognise those voices even if she had lost her memory. Not only were they just talking, but what they were talking about interested her! Right now, it seemed they were unaware of her presence below the window. Shujia's voice rang out clear.

"I did not understand your actions back there, but I decided to support you. Tell me, why did you suddenly reject getting married to the young master?" Hearing her question, Yang Yang became equally curious. Subconsciously, she leaned towards the wall.

"Mother." Biyu Lin began, her voice soft and muffled. "You don't have to worry about that. It's..." she trailed off.

Her mother sighed. "What is wrong exactly? Do you think the rumours of him being sick are true and he would die soon? Do you think he would soon go bankrupt? Or..." Her voice became more excited as she asked the last question. "Do you think he is impotent?" Hearing this, Yang Yang's palms flew to her mouth. Was she about to be forced to marry an impotent man? Not that she cared much about intimacy, but she would not like to be associated with such scandalous news.

"Mother!" Biyu Lin exclaimed, equally surprised by her mother's train of thought.

"Ah. I have always heard that the young master was incapable. It's such a pity for a young man like him." She sighed. Biyu Lin finally spoke up.

"Mother. I did not suddenly reject my marriage to the young master because of some baseless rumours. Besides, the young master and I have never been intimate, so we could not possibly have engaged in such activities." She explained. There was silence for some time as Shujia Lin seemed to comprehend her daughter's words.

"Why then did you reject him?" She murmured thoughtfully. Then her voice lit up with excitement again.

"Did you find a more easygoing man? Did you find another rich, powerful and handsome young man to marry you?" She asked excitedly.

"Mother. You.." Biyu Lin began to whine but Shujia interrupted her once again.

"Tell me. What family is he from? What is his estimated worth? How generous has he been to you? How did you meet him?" She asked in one breath. Biyu Lin's heavy sigh was heard.

Below them Yang Yang stood anxiously. She knew she should leave quickly. She would easily be caught if any of them were to look below the window, and besides, the taxi she had called earlier would soon be here, but she still couldn't leave. She was too curious to do so. For hours now she had been wondering why Biyu Lin suddenly rejected her most treasured marriage, and now Shujia Lin just asked that same question. She had to stay and listen to what Biyu Lin would say.

"Yes. I have met a new man. He might not be as wealthy as young master Youchang, but he is indeed generous to me, and would marry me in a few months"

Shujia Lin lightly clapped her hands excitedly. "So he is indeed wealthy. It's just a shame that he can't compare to the young master. But when will I be meeting him? Do you have a picture of him?"

"Mother!" Biyu Lin scolded lightly. "He would be visiting in a few days. You can see him then."

Shujia Lin sighed loudly. "Do you think giving Yang Yang out to the young master in your place was the right thing to do?" Hearing her name, Yang Yang's ears perked up. Was her aunt finally remorseful of her actions?

"The Chen family is very wealthy and influential. We wouldn't want her to be treated too nicely there and then begin to feel like the mistress of the Chen family! No matter how wealthy the family she marries into is, I want her to always know her place. Being married into the Chen family doesn't make her better than us!"

"Mother, you shouldn't worry about such trivial matters. I can assure you she would be treated horribly at the Chen family. I am sure the Chen family members would despise her, and try to avoid mingling with a low life like her. I would make sure of that." As Biyu Lin spoke of her, her voice hardened.

Yang Yang squeezed her eyes shut. Turns out she was mistaken. Her aunt was not remorseful at all. She was afraid of her rising to power and getting her revenge. And now, Shujia Lin had vowed to make her life miserable at the Chen family. She had heard enough. It was time for her to leave, they had given her enough reasons.

Clutching her bag, she began to move, careful not to make a sound. She successfully passed by Xingyi's room and the servant's quarters without any other incidents. As she walked, she thought about what she had heard. So Biyu Lin had rejected Youchang Chen because she had another man?

Why did it not feel right? From her words, the man in question was not even as wealthy or handsome as Youchang. She knew Biyu Lin. She would always go for the best. She would go for the wealthiest and most handsome, or worse still, she would go for both. She could remember that in their past life, even after being married to Youchang Chen, Biyu still had relationships with other handsome men outside her marriage. But now she was settling for less. It even seemed like she deliberately wanted Yang Yang to marry in her place. She was also not telling her mother her plans. Something that had never happened in the past. Either Biyu Lin was now smarter, or she didn't trust her mother.

Soon Yang Yang stood in front of the gate. Before she walked out, she turned back to look at the house one last time. Just then, she caught the silhouette of a woman behind Biyu Lin's window, looking in her direction. Her heart skipped a beat as she rushed out of the gate. Biyu could not have seen her. The night was too dark and she was sure it gave her enough cover.

Thinking this, she hurried towards the taxi waiting for her at the end of the street.
