Synopsis
The world is not as peaceful as it seems. Hidden within abandoned buildings, ruined temples, dark alleyways, and forgotten lands exist Cursed Zones — places where negative emotions, death, and fear have accumulated for generations. Within these cursed spaces dwell spirits, ghosts, and ancient yokai that feed on human terror and spiritual energy. Most humans cannot perceive them. But those born with exceptionally high Spiritual Energy shine like beacons in the darkness. To spirits, these individuals are not people — they are vessels. When a powerful spirit finds a compatible human, it forcefully invades their body to obtain a physical form in the human world. The process is fatal for nearly everyone. The body collapses, the soul is devoured, and the victim disappears without explanation. Only a rare few survive. Those survivors become Vessels — abnormal beings who house supernatural entities within their bodies. Feared as dangerous anomalies capable of losing control at any moment, Vessels exist on the boundary between humanity and the spirit realm. To protect society from these threats, an ancient organization known as the Exorcists operates from the shadows. Exorcists are specialists trained to detect cursed zones, eliminate hostile spirits, seal supernatural phenomena, and capture unstable vessels. Using spiritual weapons, barriers, and sacred techniques, they cleanse areas consumed by darkness and maintain the fragile balance between the human world and the realm of spirits. Among them stands Misaki Hoshino, a legendary ghost hunter known for subduing entities that entire teams cannot confront. Her daughter, Ayame Hoshino, possesses extraordinary spiritual perception and is being trained to inherit her mother’s role as a protector against the growing supernatural threat. Meanwhile, high school student Raito Kazehara lives a loud, energetic life, unaware that his overwhelming spiritual energy has already marked him as prey. His fate changes when he encounters a cursed zone and is chosen by an ancient and catastrophic yokai — a being feared in whispered legends as Kamaitachi, a spirit of absolute speed and invisible destruction. The entity’s true name is Shizume, a silent and terrifying existence whose power exists on a scale beyond ordinary spirits. Entire cursed zones collapse under her presence. Spirits vanish without resistance. Even experienced Exorcists fear confronting her. The possession should have killed Raito instantly. But he survives. Becoming the Vessel of Shizume, Raito gains access to overwhelming supernatural abilities. When her power manifests, his body moves with impossible speed, invisible wind-like forces tear through enemies, and he gains the ability to strike spirits directly. Yet the most terrifying change is not physical. During transformation, Raito’s vibrant and flashy personality disappears completely, replaced by a calm, emotionless, and stoic presence — a silent state that reflects the nature of the entity within him. His thoughts, memories, and identity remain his own, but his demeanor becomes cold and detached, as if a higher existence is acting through him. Shizume’s power exists on an absolute scale — overwhelming, precise, and unstoppable. However, such power places extreme strain on Raito’s human body, and each use deepens his connection to the spirit dwelling within him. Now labeled a dangerous Vessel and monitored by Exorcists, Raito is dragged into a hidden world where cursed zones spread, spirits hunt humans openly, and powerful yokai seek physical existence in reality. As supernatural incidents increase and the boundary between worlds begins to weaken, the balance maintained for centuries starts to collapse. Why do cursed zones continue to grow? And what truly happens when the line between spirit and human disappears? In a world ruled by fear, darkness gives birth to monsters. Those who survive their touch become something known as Yo Kai Yo.
