Chapter 26 - Chapter 26 – Nine-Tailed Ascension

The battlefield had gone silent in the wake of it. Two Half-Gold generals erased. Two thousand demons gone like dust scattered by wind.

But the sky didn't calm in response. It darkened further, gathering weight instead of releasing it, because power that defied its own stage always invited consequence eventually, and consequence had just arrived over the Southern Root in the shape of golden thunderclouds — not demonic, not abyssal.

Heavenly.

Lin Tianren's unstable core trembled violently at the sight of them.

[Core Stability: 9% → Fluctuating][Breakthrough Pressure: Critical]

If a tribulation descended on him now, in this condition, it would kill him outright before he understood what had happened. But the pressure building overhead didn't lock onto him.

It shifted instead, settling directly over the fox.

The Golden Heaven Sword Scripture hadn't only pushed him past his own limits tonight. It had ignited something dormant in the fox as well, its illusion flames shifting from red-gold to a purer, more radiant color entirely. Its tails split in front of him — one becoming two, two becoming four, four cracking visibly with threads of lightning gathering along each new tail as it formed.

Above them both, a heavenly bolt gathered and descended. The fox didn't dodge it. It stood tall instead, and roared into the coming strike as if it had been waiting its entire life for exactly this moment.

The lightning struck directly, the ground exploding outward from the impact, demon forces caught in the residual blast vaporized instantly by energy that had nothing to do with anything they'd fought against tonight. The fox's body burned under the direct hit, but didn't disintegrate the way the surrounding earth had.

Ancient runes surfaced across its fur instead, sigils that predated anything Lin Tianren recognized from his time in this world.

The Beast Queen's eyes widened, watching from above. "That bloodline," she murmured, something close to disbelief threading through the words.

Lin Tianren was barely conscious through all of it, but he understood enough to know what was happening. Beast evolution, mid-battlefield, exposed and vulnerable in a way that made it as dangerous as it was extraordinary. If interrupted now, the fox would die outright, its transformation left half-finished and unstable. If he remained passive and did nothing, the surrounding demon forces — or worse, whatever the Demon Lord's shadow was watching from — might strike while it lay defenseless.

So he forced himself upright, bones screaming, meridians tearing further with every inch of movement. He planted his sword hand into the earth and activated the last remaining thread of his sovereign field, not wide, just enough to matter — a twenty-meter protective perimeter forming around the fox, his silver aura trembling violently at the effort of holding even that small a boundary steady.

The remaining demon generals sensed the vulnerability immediately. Three Silver Peak generals charged together, one of them shouting over the chaos.

"Kill the beast before it ascends!"

Ash and abyss energy surged forward in response. Lin Tianren inhaled, blood pouring freely now from both his nose and eyes, everything he'd channeled through the Golden Heaven Scripture already spent and gone. He had only broken Silver left to work with.

But he stood anyway, and he held.

The first general attacked with a bone spear thrust, and he sidestepped it narrowly, countering with a frost strike aimed precisely at the tendon behind the knee. The second came with a heavy axe smash, and he redirected the force through a sovereign flow rotation, letting the axe's momentum carry it into a third attacking demon instead of into him.

A backstab attempt from the third general found only a half-formed illusion clone waiting for it — even mid-evolution, even burning under active tribulation lightning, the fox had managed to spare enough attention to intercept the attack meant for him.

The sky roared again overhead, the largest bolt of the entire tribulation gathering directly above the fox. For one full breath, everything around them turned pure white.

The resulting shockwave annihilated five hundred nearby demons instantly. Lin Tianren was thrown backward by the edge of it, his core nearly collapsing entirely under the strain of holding his protective field through the blast.

Silence followed, smoke filling the crater where the fox had stood. The demon army hesitated, uncertain whether to press the advantage or retreat from whatever had just happened.

Then a golden flame rose slowly from the center of the wreckage.

One tail. Three. Five. Seven. Nine, fully formed at last, each one burning with pure golden illusion fire.

The fox stepped forward out of the smoke, and it was no longer simply the fox he'd contracted with two weeks ago in a quiet valley trial. Its aura had stabilized fully into Gold Rank — Early Stage, not Half-Gold, but true Gold, a clean breakthrough completed in the middle of a battlefield that should have killed it a dozen times over in the process.

A name resonated through the air around it, carried on nothing he could see but felt anyway, deep in the sovereign resonance still humming faintly through his own broken meridians.

Heavenly Sovereign Nine-Tailed Flame Beast.

The remaining demons trembled visibly at the sight of it. The fox's eyes opened, golden pupils burning with a calm that had nothing frantic left in it. It didn't roar the way it had under the tribulation lightning. It simply lifted one tail, and golden illusion fire spread outward across three hundred meters of battlefield.

Demons trapped inside that radius began attacking phantoms of their own allies, walking straight into fatal missteps they'd never have made with clear sight. The fox moved through the resulting chaos like light itself, each tail strike landing with precision that had nothing wasted in it, each illusion lethal in exactly the moment it mattered.

A thousand demons fell within minutes. The surviving Silver Peak generals panicked outright, one of them attempting to flee the field entirely.

The fox appeared above him mid-step, golden flame piercing directly through his core. He died before he finished falling.

From high above, the Beast Queen watched it all unfold in quiet stillness. For the first time since Lin Tianren had met her, a faint, genuine smile crossed her face.

"Now you stand beside him," she said, to no one but herself.

With the fox's evolution finally complete, the protective field he'd been holding around it dissolved entirely, his own strength finally giving out beneath him. Lin Tianren fell unconscious where he stood.

His meridians had shattered in dozens of places, though somehow, impossibly, not broken beyond repair. The fox shrank slightly the moment it sensed him fall, its newly stabilized Gold aura settling into something steadier, quieter, as it moved immediately to his side. Its nine tails formed a protective barrier around him, dense enough that no demon on the remaining battlefield dared approach within its reach.

Far beyond the fighting, in the obsidian citadel suspended over its canyon of permanent mist, the Demon Lord's shadow rose fully from its throne for the first time since the ritual had begun.

Whatever passive amusement had colored its attention until now was gone entirely.

Two Half-Gold generals dead. Thousands of demons erased in a single sweep. A Gold-Rank sovereign beast born in the middle of what should have been a controlled containment operation.

"So the seed has taken root," it said, quiet and final, and began walking toward the battlefield itself for the first time — no longer content to watch from a distance while something this dangerous grew unchecked beneath it.

The nine tails burned steady around him as the smoke finally began to clear, holding the line the only way either of them had left the strength to hold it.
