Chapter 1 - THE NIGHT EVERYTHING CHANGED

The rain fell in heavy sheets over Montrevia, turning the cobblestone streets into slick mirrors reflecting the city's dim neon lights. Lila Moren hugged her coat tighter around her shoulders, wishing she had chosen a cab instead of walking. Every drop stung her skin, but the chill was nothing compared to the unease gnawing at her. She had thought moving to this city would be a fresh start, a chance to be ordinary for once. Yet tonight, everything felt wrong.

A shadow flitted across the alley ahead. Lila froze, her pulse spiking. She told herself it was just her imagination, a trick of the flickering streetlamp—but the feeling of being watched made her stomach twist. The heels of her boots clicked against the wet pavement, each step sounding impossibly loud in the quiet night.

Then she heard it—a low, deliberate whisper carried on the wind. "Miss Moren…"

Her heart lurched. She spun around, but the alley behind her was empty. Panic clawed at her chest. She should run, she knew that instinctively. But her legs felt rooted to the spot, caught between fear and disbelief.

Another shadow appeared, darker and closer this time. A hand reached for her shoulder, and before she could scream, a firm, controlled voice cut through the storm:

"Step back."

The presence was immediate, commanding. Lila's breath hitched. She felt strength and danger in every movement, and something inside her stirred—a mixture of fear and fascination she didn't understand.

The man—tall, impossibly strong, and impossibly calm—stepped between her and the approaching figure. His dark eyes flicked over her, unreadable yet intense, as though he could see into the parts of her she had spent her life hiding. "Are you hurt?" he asked, his voice low, almost a growl.

"I… I don't know," Lila stammered, her voice trembling. She wanted to back away, to put distance between herself and him, but every instinct told her she was safer with him than anywhere else.

The attacker lunged, but the man moved like a shadow, intercepting with precision that made Lila's chest tighten in awe and fear. In a single motion, the threat was neutralized—painful, sharp, and final. Lila's knees weakened as the adrenaline faded, leaving her trembling.

He turned to her, and for the first time, she saw the faintest shadow of vulnerability in his eyes. "You're safe now," he said, almost softly.

Lila's throat tightened. "Who… who are you?"

He hesitated, then answered, almost as if the question made him wary. "Someone who doesn't let people die if I can help it. That's all you need to know—for now."

But Lila's mind raced. Her ordinary life, the one she had carefully built, had shattered in minutes. And yet, a strange, inexplicable pull drew her toward him—a mixture of fear, trust, and something dangerously electric she couldn't name.

He extended a hand, not for comfort, but for guidance, and she hesitated only a second before taking it. Every nerve in her body screamed that this night was the beginning of something that would change everything—her safety, her heart, her life.

Montrevia's rain seemed to hush around them, as though the city itself was holding its breath. Lila realized with a jolt that she was stepping into a world she didn't understand. One filled with shadows, power, and a man who terrified and captivated her all at once.

And for the first time in her life, she understood that her world would never be ordinary again.
