Chapter 1 - A Normal Day

A normal day, this was a normal day for Ace, well except for the fact that he was in a trip, he was quite fine. The young teenager was trying his hardest to sleep for over an hour but the people outside and the people up, on the deck of this moderate ship were quite loud.

It was expected though, it was noon after all and they were in the middle of the sea so everyone was excited, well everyone except Ace-the raven haired teenager with black simple eyes shrugged, for the past minute everything was deathly silent and it was out of nowhere that the loud thunderous voices and footsteps of the deck just froze and disappeared.

Of course, he would not have minded this, in fact he wanted to use this sudden silence to sleep but sadly his mother was on the deck too, reluctantly he got up from his bed, even the usual feeling of the ship's rise and fall was now gone, the ship was still.

He sighed, it was as if gods had listened to him for once and made a environment perfect for him to lay down and sleep with a smile but unfortunately his mother was not there with him.

Normally he would not have cared about it unless it was night but now, he felt a feeling that something bad was going on the deck. Even if it was not something bad, he was quite curious on what could have made the never-ending noise in the ship disappear as if there was no one in the still ship.

He opened his door and stepped in the passageway which was quite long, it would be a scary place if he was alone in the passageway in the middle of the night. He followed the passage until it opened to a short flight of stairs and climbed them, pushing the door open.

The moment he stepped out, into the deck the shadow of the rood covered him and it was a little long, he would have gotten out of its shadow in a few steps but he stopped even before he took the first step. His eyes fell on a man in the deck and a frown appeared on Ace's face.

Ace was not particularly someone who observed every last detail nor was he some talented kid who had a calm mind, no he was but a normal kid of the age 16, he was in no way special or in no way different from any other normal human he met but none of that really was necessary to see the man in front of him and confirming that there was indeed something bad happening.

Ace saw the man's expression, it did not take any genius to recognise that look on the man's face. It was the look of utter, and complete despair and fear. Ace's frown only deepened when he saw beyond the man and saw a women who had a similar expression on her face.

That was when Ace realised that everyone had some sort of bad expression, like fear, dread and despair. Each person's emotions were the same yet different but there was one thing common in all of them-it was where they were looking.

They were all looking at the sky, of course Ace could not see what they did as he had a roof on top of him and also because he decided to stay in the shadows, if all of the people in the deck were frozen looking at whatever it was they were looking at, then it would be wise for him to not see it.

After all, a thing which filled everyone who gazed at it with a feeling on dread or utter hopelessness would also fill him with the same feeling.

Supressing his curiosity on the mysterious object that made everyone hopeless and supressing his desire to go out and look for his mother, he looked down at his hands and legs, there was nothing special-just normal clothes and a normal body of a living human.

It helped him calm down a bit. And then he saw a girl of maybe 10 years or younger run past him and outside the embrace of the shadow and with no more roof on top of her, she followed everyone's gaze and looked at the sky on top and then she became still.

Then she let out a scream, as Ace watched her, as something came out of her mouth, it looked as some sort of energy-in white colour. The energy or whatever the white light was came out from her mouth, that was when his slow mind realised it.

The mysterious light was some sort of energy, maybe it was the life force but the main thing was that the thing was being sucked from the little and some seconds later, all energy disappeared and like the rest of them, a expression of absolute terror made its way to her face, her gaze still on whatever it was on top of them.

'What the actual shit.'

Ace did not talk, maybe because reading so many novels had thought him that he should not give away his position to an enemy or maybe because he just could not.

Soon, he calmed down. He was but a normal and weak human like the rest of his normal species except for one thing... His mind, he was not some sort of genius-no, he was the laziest kid in his class, barely passing the exams and it was even a miracle that he did not fail a year and somehow just scored above the passing mark.

Though, despite being inferior to his classmates in theoretical exams and physicality, he was far superior to other normal humans in terms of his mind. He was mostly calm, he was not some kind of cold and calculated killer.

He was just a normal calm-minded human. There was really nothing that could make him angry-well nothing except disturbing his sleep. He was quite a lazy, normal person after all and the only time he decided to not sleep were while reading novels.

And it seems all those reading were not in vain, he now at least had an idea of what was happening-even though it was mostly based on the fictional stories he read.

He briefly thought about the entire thing. The thing, an object or a person did not notice him, most probably because he was hidden from its direct view.

It was also strange that he did not hear even a single loud noise while he was trying to sleep no matter how bad the situation was when they looked at this mysterious thing there was a chance that at least one of them first saw the horror on their face and so it was odd that that particular person did not make any noise before laying his eyes on the mysterious thing and going still.

And then, the girl he saw going out of the shadow of the roof, how she also saw the mysterious thing and in a few seconds, how that energy was sucked out of her.

From what he saw and understood, he narrowed down the type of enemy that had sucked out the energy off the young girl.

'And everyone else.' A dark look appeared on his face, from what he saw it was pretty obvious that everyone in the deck who saw that thing had their energy sucked out. That also included his mother.

He supressed his desire to grunt and calmed his mind once again. They were at least not dead and there was a chance that only the children's energy were sucked off. He thought that because the only one who's energy he saw being sucked out was the young girl. But in that same logic, it was also possible that only the energies of females were being sucked.

Well, seeing everyone with the same expression told him there was no such discrimination and everyone was the same in front of that mysterious thing that seemed to float in the sky above.

A frown made its way onto his face, there were just too many options on what or who the enemy was.

'Damn it all!' He looked down at his feet again, and slowly thought things thoroughly. It seems whatever that mysterious thing was either did not notice him, or did not mind him and both were pretty good for Ace.

Then suddenly fast footsteps of someone running behind him reached his ears.

'Is that some kind of monster?' He turned back expecting to see the mysterious thing, or maybe some minion of it but fortunately he did not see neither of them.

Right now both a good and a bad thing happened to Ace. First thing was that the figure running towards his way was a human and seemed to be of his age and the bad thing was that he was making too much noise.

'We'll be noticed. Crap.'

Unlike before with the young girl, he knew that a figure was running towards the deck and could stop him.

However if he did not, he would have to see another person's energy being sucked out.
