Chapter 99 - Chapter 98: An Encounter with the Elite Four

After the battle on Murcott Island, Ash and his friends took a short break on a beautiful, uninhabited island. The blue sea, clear sky, and soft sand allowed them to fully relax after days of travel. The Pokémon also played in the calm waters, restoring their energy.

Setting off once again, they arrived at a bustling location known as Mandarin Island South. It seemed to be a major transportation hub within the Orange Archipelago, filled with Trainers and a lively atmosphere.

Shortly after landing, Ash was approached by several local Trainers looking for a challenge. The current Ash was not only equipped with powerful Pokémon but also possessed extensive battle experience and a steady mindset. Commanding partners like Pikachu and Wartortle, he handled the matches with ease, securing a string of victories.

Surprisingly, Ash showed no sign of arrogance after his wins. After every match, he would pause to reflect silently, sometimes whispering to Pikachu.

"That Water Pulse just now... if the angle had been a bit sharper, it might have hit faster..."

"Pikachu, the transition from Quick Attack to Iron Tail can still be a bit smoother..."

"Against that kind of defense, maybe we should consider using status moves to interfere..."

Ash remained deep in thought, his mind constantly replaying the details of the battles he had just finished.

"Ash... he seems different somehow," Misty whispered to Tracey as she watched him. "Before, he'd be jumping for joy after a win streak. Now he's so calm, doing a post-match review."

Tracey adjusted his hat, his eyes full of respect. "Yeah. He's not just chasing victory anymore; he's chasing perfection in every detail, thinking about how to bring out the absolute maximum power of his Pokémon. That level of composure and drive is really impressive. He truly is the Champion of the Indigo League."

Their conversation, and Ash's focused demeanor, were observed by a woman standing in the shade of a nearby tree. She had long, smooth burgundy hair and wore fashionable black-framed glasses. She was dressed in a form-fitting blue jacket over a low-cut red top, with a matching black skirt that perfectly accentuated her mature and graceful figure.

She had a cool, elegant aura, but her eyes were intellectual and kind, and a faint smile played across her lips. She was one of the Elite Four of the Kanto RegionLorelei of the Ice!

Lorelei had simply been passing through, intending to give a lecture and perform a demonstration match, when she overheard Misty and Tracey. She had seen the boy who remained quiet and thoughtful even after his easy victories. When she heard "Indigo League Champion," her gaze lingered on Ash for a moment longer.

So, this was the boy from Pallet Town who had recently risen to fame, reaching the summit of the league right at his debut.

Ash noticed her gaze and looked up. The moment he saw her, he recognized the famous member of the Elite Four. He quickly stepped forward and greeted her politely. "Hello, Miss Lorelei! I'm Ash from Pallet Town. It's an honor to meet you here!"

Misty and Tracey hurried over as well, offering their respectful greetings. Misty was particularly excitedLorelei was her idol!

Lorelei adjusted her glasses, a soft, welcoming smile appearing on her face. "Hello, Ash. And hello to you two as well. I happened to overhear your friends, and I saw your matches. It's rare to see a Trainer stay so calm and reflective after a win streak. That mindset is very valuable."

Receiving praise from an Elite Four member made Ash scratch his head sheepishly. "Thank you for the compliment, but I still have a long way to go."

Looking at Ash's humble attitude, Lorelei's curiosity deepened. She said, "I'm about to give a lecture on this island, followed by a demonstration match against a well-known local Trainer. If you're interested, you're welcome to watch."

"Really? That would be great!" The three of them were thrilled. Witnessing an Elite Four member in a real battle was a rare and precious learning opportunity!

The group headed to the stage where Lorelei was speaking. As one of the most academic members of the Elite Four, Lorelei's insights into Pokémon types and research were unique; even if they didn't quite reach the level of Professor Oak, her perspectives were highly enlightening for Ash.

Lorelei's demonstration match was nothing short of an art form. Her Pokémon, Dewgong, displayed masterful control and versatility with Ice-type moves. It was precise and elegant, as if they weren't just fighting,

but performing a dance of ice. Although her opponent was a skilled Trainer, they were quickly overwhelmed by Lorelei's absolute strength and superior tactics. The audience erupted in thunderous applause.

As the crowd began to disperse after the match, Ash's heart was racing with excitement. He summoned his courage and walked up to Lorelei while she was resting.

"Miss Lorelei!" Ash's eyes were burning with the desire for a challenge. "Would you... would you be willing to have a battle with me? Just one match! I want to feel for myself the gap between me and the Elite Four!"

Lorelei saw the pure and intense fighting spirit in Ash's eyesit reminded her of her younger self. She smiled, showing no disdain for him being a "rookie" Champion. Instead, she appreciated his courage. "I accept. However, my Pokémon just finished a match, so let's make it a one-on-one exhibition."

"Yes! Thank you very much!" Ash nodded excitedly.

The two of them took their places on opposite sides of the battlefield, while Misty and Tracey watched from the sidelines with a mix of nerves and anticipation.

"Let's go, Pikachu!"

"Pika!" Pikachu hopped onto the field, sparks dancing on its cheeks. Even facing an Elite Four member, it showed no fear.

Lorelei gracefully tossed a Poké Ball. "Then, this is my choiceCloyster!"

The hard-shelled Cloyster appeared, its body glinting with a cold light. Its shell was tightly shut, leaving only a pair of cold eyes visible through the gap.

"Let the match begin!" Tracey volunteered to act as the referee.

"Pikachu, use Quick Attack!" Ash took the initiative, hoping to strike first. Pikachu turned into a white blur, charging toward Cloyster.

"Cloyster, use Withdraw," Lorelei commanded calmly.

Cloyster's shell clamped shut instantly, significantly boosting its defense. Pikachu's Quick Attack slammed into the hard shell, having very little effect.

"Now, Pikachu, use Electro Ball repeatedly!" Ash immediately changed his strategy, trying to find an opening with long-range attacks.

Pikachu leaped back, quickly forming spheres of electricity and launching them at Cloyster.

"Cloyster, deflect them with Rapid Spin!" Lorelei's response was effortless. Cloyster's shell opened slightly as it began to spin at high speed, acting like a rotating shield that batted away and shattered the incoming Electro Balls one by one.

"Such powerful defense and reactions!" Misty exclaimed.

"Miss Lorelei's timing is perfect," Tracey noted, recording the details.

"Pikachu, don't stop! Use Double Team to distract it!" Seeing that a direct assault wasn't working, Ash switched to tactics. Instantly, over a dozen copies of Pikachu appeared on the field, surrounding Cloyster.

"That kind of distraction won't work on Cloyster," Lorelei said with a slight smile. "Cloyster, use Whirlpool!"

Cloyster stopped spinning and released a torrent of rotating water from its shell, which quickly expanded into a massive vortex! Whirlpool was not only an offensive move but also covered a wide area. In an instant, the clones were washed away, leaving the real Pikachu exposed.

"Pikachu, jump to avoid it! Then use Iron Tail on the water's surfaceuse the recoil to get close!" Ash's ability to adapt on the fly was top-tier.

Pikachu leaped nimbly, dodging the Whirlpool. Its tail took on a metallic sheen and slammed into the water, launching it like a cannonball toward Cloyster!

"A clever idea! Cloyster, use Protect!"

Just as Pikachu's Iron Tail was about to land, a green barrier expanded in front of Cloyster, perfectly blocking the strike.

"Now, Pikachu, use Thunderbolt!" Ash seized the moment during the brief pause after Cloyster used Protect.

At such close range, Thunderbolt was impossible to dodge! Golden snakes of electricity instantly engulfed Cloyster.

"It hit!" Misty cheered.

However, as the light faded, Cloyster remained standing. Though its shell bore scorch marks and a few minor cracks, it was still in the fight. Its durability was incredible!

"Cloyster, one last effort! Use Icicle Spear!" Lorelei ordered.

Enduring the paralysis from the electric shock, Cloyster fired countless sharp Icicle Spears from the gap in its shell, raining down on the airborne Pikachu like a storm.

"Pikachu, use Electroweb for defense!"

Pikachu quickly spun a web of electricity in mid-air. Most of the dense icicles were blocked by the web, shattering against it, but a few managed to pierce through and strike Pikachu. Pikachu tumbled from the air, crashing hard onto the ground.

As the dust settled, both Pikachu and Cloyster struggled to stand. Ultimately, they both exhausted the last of their strength and collapsed at the same time.

"Pikachu and Cloyster are both unable to battle! This match is a draw!" Tracey announced loudly.

Ash and Lorelei both walked forward.

"You worked hard, Pikachu," Ash said, picking up his tired partner with concern.

"You too, Cloyster. That was a good battle," Lorelei said, recalling her partner.

Lorelei looked at Ash, her eyes full of undisguised admiration. "That was a brilliant battle, Ash. Your command, your adaptability, and your bond with Pikachu all exceeded my expectations. It's no wonder you won the Indigo League."

"Thank you, Miss Lorelei!" Ash was very excited. "I learned so much from your defensive and counter-attacking rhythm!"

In the conversation that followed, Ash didn't just talk about the battle. He shared his observations on the ecology of Water-type Pokémon and even offered some unique insights into the use of Ice-type moves in different environments. Though some of his ideas were still a bit raw, his keen observation and depth of thought surprised Lorelei once again.

This young man was not only powerful and composed but also possessed a natural talent for understanding Pokémon.

As Lorelei watched Ash speak with such passion and creativity, a softness she hadn't realized was there began to ripple in her cool eyes. She started to feel a subtle kind of affection for Ash that went beyond a senior's admiration for a talented junior. This feeling was beginning to quietly grow.

As they said their goodbyes, Lorelei smiled. "I look forward to seeing an even more spectacular performance from you in future League Conferences, Ash."

"I'll work even harder! I promise, Miss Lorelei!" Ash nodded vigorously.

Carrying the valuable experience of facing an Elite Four member and a feeling of immense encouragement, Ash and his friends left Mandarin Island South. Lorelei remained where she was, watching them go for a long time, a trace of a smile lingering on her lips.

"What an... interesting boy!"

And so, the seeds of a connection with Lorelei have been sown. Who knows how it will develop in the future?
