Chapter 28: Salary
Looking at the approved salary, Hikaku could not stop smiling and neither could the other elders. At first, there had been doubts. They feared that Konoha would reject their request or delay the process.
But once they sent the invoice to the Konoha Finance Department regarding the salaries, it took less than two days for the full payment to be deposited. That was the moment they realized Raiken was someone they could trust. In fact, they started to feel foolish for having limited the number of people eligible to serve in police duty for so long. What surprised the elders the most was how quickly the payments were processed.
"It seems Raiken was telling the truth," said Hikaku.
"Clan leader, why did we never think of hiring all the Uchiha before?" one of the elders asked.
"Why?" Hikaku replied. "Because our clan has always prided itself on being honest. When I first received this position from Tobirama, I only wanted to do what was best for the village—just like the rest of you. But now, I see this position was a trap set by Tobirama himself. And if it's a trap, then we must learn how to use it to our advantage."
"Clan leader is wise," the elders murmured in agreement.
"We should arrange Raiken and Mikoto's marriage as soon as possible," one of them suggested.
While the elders held their discussion, another group within the Uchiha Clan was also celebrating the housewives.
Most of the Uchiha women hadn't held jobs since getting married. Every day, they cooked, cleaned, and cared for their families. It had always been enough. Their husbands earned decent salaries, more than enough to live comfortably and still have some saving for the future. No one complained.
But everything changed when they were suddenly asked to perform small tasks for the police department, cleaning, sorting documents, and handling light clerical work for just half an hour a day. It seemed insignificant at first.
Yet something unexpected happened. After only five days of work, they were called to the Konoha Military Police Force building to collect their salaries. The surprise was overwhelming—they received full wages, not partial payments. Even more shocking, most of them were paid at the Jōnin level salary.
And no, these weren't ordinary women. Uchiha women, especially mothers, carried a quiet strength forged by years of patience and sacrifice. Living as mothers and housewives had built up a certain pent-up frustration and emotional depth and that emotional energy awakened something powerful.
Nearly 90% of them had awakened the two-tomoe Sharingan.
That meant 33% of the women were now earning higher salaries than their husbands, while the rest have same salary or lower than their husbands.
Later that evening, the Uchiha resident was filled with joy. Smiles stretched across every face as people gathered to celebrate. Husbands and wives went out together, and families could be seen shopping for clothes, food, and toys. For the first time in a long while, the Uchiha Clan felt like they were finally moving forward—united, proud, and hopeful.
--- Salary reaction---
"What? We've only worked five days, and we will received our salary today?" asked one of the Uchiha mothers in disbelief.
"Yes, Auntie. Please go to the Finance Department," replied a younger Uchiha with a bright smile.
Upon hearing this, the group of housewives rushed toward the Finance Department, located within the Konoha Military Police Force headquarters—the same building where the police force usually they are working everyday.
To their surprise, the queue had become three times longer than usual due to the massive increase in employment. Because of this, the department head divided the counters into four lanes—two for women, two for men—to streamline the process.
Within two hours, everyone had received their salary and returned home, many walking in thoughtful silence, still stunned by the sudden salary.
"Husband, I received my salary," said one of the wives excitedly as she stepped into their modest home.
"How much did you get?" her husband asked, smiling curiously.
"Three hundred thousand ryo," she replied with pride.
The husband's smile widened for a second, then immediately dropped.
"Why did I only get two hundred thousand ryo?" he said, clearly frustrated.
"I know why," said the wife, her eyes glowing. She activated her Sharingan, revealing three tomoe in each eye. "It's because of this."
Her husband blinked and activated his own Sharingan, which only had two tomoe.
"The more tomoe, the higher the salary," she explained. "The average salary for a jōnin in Konoha is between 200,000 to 300,000 ryo. Those with two tomoe get the base salary of Jonin, while three tomoe get the highest."
"You're telling me our payment depends on our Sharingan?" the husband asked in shock.
"Yes. According to the officers in the Finance Department, our clan leader made a special agreement with Second Hokage Senju Tobirama many years ago. The payment scale for Uchiha working in the police is based on the number of tomoe in the Sharingan. That's why the clan leader encouraged all the housewives to join the Konoha Military Police Force."
"Really?" the husband said, impressed.
"Not only that," the wife continued, "they told us to keep it a secret from the other clans. If people found out, it might stir up jealousy."
The husband nodded and made a zipping gesture over his lips. "I'm not stupid enough to show off our wealth."
He then grinned, eyes sparkling. "Wife, let's go shopping."
"Let's go!" she laughed, grabbing her purse.
All across the Uchiha district, families were having similar conversations. Joy filled the air. Laughter echoed through courtyards and alleys. One particular family, known for having eight daughters—each recently graduated but still unmarried due to their young age, become very happy. Each of the daughters earned between 200,000 to 300,000 ryo, and with their combined salary exceeding two million ryo, their household became the wealthiest in the clan that month.
Later, word spread within the clan about the man behind this employment—Uzumaki Raiken. Though he wasn't born as an Uchiha, he had earned the clan's respect. As the future son-in-law of Uchiha Hikaku, it was Raiken who had asked his future father-in-law about the old agreement with Tobirama. It was Raiken who discovered the loophole. It was Raiken who proposed hiring every able-bodied Uchiha—including the housewives and ensuring they were paid fairly.
This initiative was no longer a secret within the clan. Everyone knew who was responsible for the rise in employment, the increase in income, and the growing morale. Even those who had previously opposed Raiken involvement in the clan now approved of his engagement to Mikoto.
Especially the women. For years, they had relied solely on their husbands' income. Most men handed over 90% of their earnings for household needs and saved the remaining 10% for emergencies or personal spending. But now, these same women had their own salaries. They could save more, invest in their children's education, buy new clothing, or treat themselves to items they once had to delay or forgo entirely.
Still, one rule remained ironclad: silence.
The clan elders had reminded everyone—especially the younger ones, not to speak of these matters outside the Uchiha district. If word got out, jealousy or political interference from the Hokage or other clans could bring trouble. The agreement with Tobirama was old, and although technically still valid, public sentiment could sway everything.
Fortunately, Shisui had not yet been born, and Uchiha Ren, the son of the deceased Uchiha Kagami, was away on a long-term mission.
For now, the Uchiha quietly celebrated their newfound prosperity behind closed doors. Their gratitude for Raiken only deepened. Even though he had no Sharingan, even though he came from Uzumaki clan, his service to uchihc aln was unquestionable. He had brought wealth and opportunity to the Uchiha.
