Chapter 1 - A 'normal' Gothamite (Updated version)

Ring Ring Ring

"Son of a bitch, I really need to stop going to bed at 2:00 in the morning knowing damn well that I have to go to school in the morning," I said to myself as I turned off my alarm. I got out of my bed slowly, and I turned on the lamp that was on my nightstand next to my bed—something I do every morning—yet something felt off, but I brushed it off.

Once I got out of bed, I stretched my sore and tired body, groaning as I did so. After I did that, I started to walk to the bathroom. In the bathroom, I washed my face, brushed my teeth, and dried my face.

I started to walk to the kitchen, and I walked past my living room that only had a few beanbags and a 24-inch Roku TV on the floor next to a PS4, a Nintendo Switch, and a few games near them.

"I hate being poor and a fucking orphan in this shithole," I said to myself as I got to the kitchen and started to make my coffee. Then once my coffee was done, I added sugar and milk to it.

I walked back to my room while drinking my coffee. In my room, I set my coffee mug on my desk, went to my dresser, and got out a pair of cream sweatpants and a long-sleeved red shirt with a grey tank top under it.

I turned around back to my desk, and I saw four little bottles of completely different colors with a note that said, 'Drink us one at a time.' I looked at the bottles in surprise because they weren't there when I put my mug on my desk. "This is some damn magic bullshit happening to me—it has to be," I said as I kept looking at the bottles. Then I said, "Maybe I should ask Tim if I should drink them because he might know what is happening because that asshole knows everything."

I shook my head and grabbed the bottle that had the white liquid in it. Then I opened the top of it and smelled it, and I smelled nothing from it—like there was no smell from it.

"Fuck it, this might be my only chance to get any type of power," I said as I got ready to shoot this thing down in one go.

I took a deep breath, then I said, "Here it goes," and I downed it all in one go. Once I drank it all, I froze because I got a rush of info into my head.

I learned that I drank the Essence of Blank. It allowed me to be limitless in the sense that I have no limit on things I can learn and do. I can learn anything and everything, while it can also increase all other abilities from any other Essence that I have.

"Holy shit, I am now actually built differently now," I said to myself happily. But I paused when I remembered Tim, my friend from Gotham City High School. Tim Drake, aka Red Robin, a comic book character. I realized that I was in DC and that I was in a world that was not mine, yet I had memories that said I did belong in this world that were very similar to my memories of "the real world."

"I think I might have a breakdown right now," I said to myself as I sat down on my bed to calm down.

'One, two, three, four,' I thought to myself as I inhaled for four seconds, then I held for four seconds and exhaled for four seconds. Then I repeated that five times.

"I don't even know what to think about right now," I said as I got off my bed. Then I reached for my mug that was on my desk and drank all of it in one go, and I put the mug back on my desk.

I paused as I realized that I just drank an Essence. "I am such an idiot," I said to myself as I face-palmed because I realized that I knew what Essences were, but I didn't realize it because I felt like everything was normal yet only a little off.

"I think my memories are combining together, so that is maybe why I didn't react when I felt something off."

"Wait, how the fuck am I in DC?" I said as I walked in a circle in the room trying to make sense of this. "I feel like I should have a bigger reaction to this," I said because I was only kind of panicked and shocked, but for some reason I wasn't that panicked.

"Maybe it's because my DC side is really used to crazy shit happening all the time," I said as I remembered all the shit the DC me lived through in all my 16 years of living in this world.

"And I have a gun too," I said as I went under my bed to take out my gun that I kept in a shoe box that I owned—or rather my DC version owned—because most people own guns in Gotham, even some kids, because people here like to shoot when they feel like they are in danger. "Not surprised that I have one of these because I had one in the 'real world' too."

"Let's deal with the fact that I'm in DC later and drink the last three of what I assume are Essences that I have to drink while being happy with whatever Essences I get," I said as I put my gun back in the shoe box and under my bed.

Then I stood up in front of my desk where the three bottles of Essences were. I grabbed the car oil-looking Essence. "My mouth might hate me for this," I said as I opened the bottle and smelled it. It smelled like dark chocolate. "Not the biggest fan of dark chocolate, but at least it's not car oil."

I downed the whole thing in one go, and it tasted like very pure dark chocolate. Then all the info came into my head, and it was the Essence of the Crafter. So I can design, build, and maintain anything. Anything I make will never rot or rust and only be destroyed through violence while being very durable. I can make items that are made by someone else better than them. I can conjure dead or inorganic materials needed to work with from thin air, but I will need a rough idea of what I am conjuring. I can make stuff of the highest rank, and I can force abilities onto items.

"Ok, I can make some amazing things with this, and this is the best Essence I've gotten yet," I said as I held out my hand and thought of an iron ingot that weighed about 10 pounds. Then it appeared in my hand from thin air, and it weighed down my hand a little bit. "Shit, it actually works!" I said as I put the iron ingot on my desk as I got really excited because I can make stuff now.

"Wait, I need to calm down and not get too excited now. I still got two more Essences left."

I grabbed the brown one and opened it, then smelled it. It smelled like chips and garlic, which if you ask me is a weird mix, but I won't judge. I took a deep breath, then I downed it.

I got the Essence of Magical Backpack, and it's an inventory, to put it in very simple terms. So I get a large backpack of my choice. This backpack is completely indestructible and will regenerate rapidly if damaged anyway, and weighs nothing to me, which is great. Right now it's about the size of a shipping container and rapidly growing bigger over time. No one can take it away from me or get into it unless I allow them to. I can summon it, and it can act like a house, lab, or workshop. I can summon the stuff in the backpack if I wish. I can upgrade it if I wish by adding stuff to the backpack—like adding a water bottle to it, then it will create water passively—and I can put everything and anything in it, like mana and energy.

"Damn, I got a fucking inventory in the form of a backpack that will grow over time," I said as I started to smile as I started to think about a backpack design.

I thought of a blackish-grey colored leather backpack. Then it appeared in my hands, and there was no weight behind it like the Essence said. I put my head into it, and there was an area in it that was the size of a shipping container, and it was blank—just blank. There was no color in it. Then I thought a little bit, and it changed to the setting of the inside of a shipping container with three long lights.

I pulled my head out of it and nodded my head because I made it to my liking. I put the backpack on the floor and thought for it to disappear. Then it did that—it disappeared. I decided to test something. I opened my hand, and it appeared. Then I closed my hand, and it disappeared, so I repeated that a few times. "It's easier to do it with hand movements than mentally do it," I said as I nodded my head in happiness as I grabbed a handbook from my desk and wrote that info into the handbook. Once I wrote it, I put the handbook into the backpack.

"Please don't give me pink's power," I said as I grabbed the last bottle that was pink, and I opened it, then smelled it. It smelled like Pepto-Bismol. "Damn it, I hate the taste of Pepto-Bismol," I said as I frowned a little bit. "Fuck it, we ball," then I drank it all.

It was the Essence of Healer, and it gave me a controllable, expanding aura that starts at a 10-mile radius. It purifies the environment, reduces natural disasters, and accelerates plant and animal population recovery without inbreeding issues. Non-destructive imported species are unaffected. I can place permanent fields down anywhere to persist after I leave that act just like that aura and with a 5-mile radius.

My presence gives healing and self-improvement in those nearby, accelerating recovery from physical and mental ailments, including chronic conditions and their supernatural things. The effect ensures individuals reach their full potential within a year, barring self-sabotage, while I gain inviolate well-being. I am immune to everything that can or will affect my well-being in a bad way. I regenerate at double the normal human rate, recovering from even crippling injuries and limb loss—a process I can further accelerate through focused self-healing. Regeneration speed increases with physical strength.

I have a comprehensive, self-updating mental database of medicinal plants, encompassing identification, differentiation from harmful look-alikes, and optimal harvesting times and methods. I got a beyond-genius intellect with perfect memory, instant recall, and comprehensive archiving capabilities. This mental capacity is retroactive, protected from harmful memories and personality-altering effects, including mental domination and forced ascension, while still allowing for personal growth and learning.

I can scan other people with a touch to see what is wrong with them. I have unparalleled medical expertise, encompassing all techniques—from conventional medicine and surgery to esoteric practices like acupuncture and sound healing, and including herbal remedies and germ prevention. My knowledge is historically comprehensive, automatically updated, and flawlessly accurate, ensuring only proven methods are used with magical ways too.

I can cleanse and heal beings mentally, physically, and spiritually, removing curses, banishing evil, purifying negative energies, reversing transformations, curing diseases like vampirism and lycanthropy, repairing injuries and genetic defects, restoring minds, and undoing brainwashing. This healing can be performed at a distance or through touch (more potent), affecting single or multiple targets, with concentration accelerating the effects of my passive aura.

I can bring the dead back with enough time and practice. My healing is complete and unobstructed. Wounds close cleanly, removing foreign objects. Bones realign perfectly, and minds recover fully with intact personalities and memories. Harmful cybernetics can also be safely removed. And finally, I can activate, deactivate, adjust the intensity, and specify the targets of all my abilities within the limits of my current healing capabilities.

"Let's test the field part of this Essence, so I have to put my intent and will into a single place," I said as I went to the living room and looked at the middle of the room. Then I focused my intent and will into that spot, and I felt a smooth and gentle presence around me, and I knew by instinct that it belonged to me and my powers.

"Now, for me to heal someone, I need to let my healing energy flow gently like water and not force it," I said as I flowed my energy to the palm of my hand, and it started to glow a faint gold color. "It's beautiful," I whispered to myself in awe.

I looked at the clock that was hanging on the wall in the living room, and I saw it was 7:47 AM. Then I got up fast and rushed to my room and grabbed my bookbag and checked if I needed anything. Once I saw I didn't need anything, I paused. Then I went under my bed and took my gun from my shoe box. Then I summoned my magical backpack and put my gun in there with all four magazines and a few boxes of bullets. Then I unsummoned my magical backpack and grabbed my phone and headphones and put music on my headphones. Then I put my phone in my bookbag as I put my bookbag on my back.

Once I was at my front door, I grabbed my bike that I left in front of my door. Then I opened my door with the bike in my hands and locked the door. I walked down the stairs holding my bike, then I walked out the entrance of the apartment. I got on my bike and rode it to school.

Because today was the day my whole life changed for better or for worse.
