Ember's POV
The grocery bag split open right on my front entrance, sending apples rolling everywhere.
"Great," I muttered, chasing after a red apple that was heading toward the woods. "Just perfect."
My hands were still shaking from what happened at the tree farm an hour ago. Cade's words kept spinning in my head like a broken record. This has to end tonight.
But why? What was he so scared of?
I bent down to pick up the scattered groceries, trying not to cry again. Crying wouldn't fix anything, I said to myself. It never did.
That's when I saw it.
A white envelope stuck under my door mat, like someone had shoved it there in a hurry. My name was written on the front in big letters.
Nobody had ever left me a mail. The post office was in town, and they never delivered way out here.
My heart started beating faster as I picked up the envelope. It felt light, like there was just a piece of paper inside.
