The fancy envelope slipped through my fingers and hit the floor like a stone.
My name was written on the front in perfect gold letters. Real gold that sparkled under the kitchen light. The kind of expensive paper that rich people used for important things.
Important things like weddings.
I stared at it for a long time, my heart beating so hard that I could hear it in my ears. Maybe if I didn't pick it up, it wouldn't be real. Maybe I could pretend this was all a bad dream.
But dreams didn't leave golden envelopes on your doorstep.
My hands shook as I bent down and grabbed it. The paper felt heavy and cold, like touching ice. In the corner was a fancy stamp with the Blackwood family symbol, a wolf with silver eyes.
Just like Cade's eyes when he was angry or passionate.
I tore it open before I could change my mind.
