Synopsis
It is said that if the strongest demon king, the final boss of the game is defeated; the entire game world would immediately come to an end. And if the hero dies, the world is predicted to reset to the hero's last checkpoint. For players, achieving that ending would be a moment of triumph, the proud culmination of the original game’s "happy ending" script, since they’re playing as the main character. But for Satanos, things are different. He was once an ordinary man who suddenly reincarnated as the demon king. One day, upon realizing the reality of his new role, Satanos began searching for any way possible to prevent the world from ending. And for personal reasons feeling unfit to be a ruler and simply wanting to live freely; he decides to fake his death in front of the hero. As a result, he is now forced to protect the heroes from the shadows. Because in truth, the enemies of the heroes aren’t just demons, certain nobles and individuals are also plotting to kill them for their own selfish reasons. Thus begins the free-spirited life of a former demon king, surrounded by ridiculous characters he meets in an adventurer city, characters who end up being recruited as his secret shadow heroes.

Chapter 1 - 000—Nightmare

I don't know. Even when I wanted to ask, no one seemed to care.

I've been having the same terrifying dream every single day. And frankly, I'd say it's the worst kind of dream. One that keeps returning without mercy.

So I try to only hold on to the parts that seem important, the ones that feel connected to my current situation.

Maybe it happened around seventy years ago. A 22-year-old hikikomori found an old video game in a locked storage room. It was an old-school JRPG about the daily life of a hero who had to defeat the Demon King by any means necessary to save the world.

The title of the game, if I remember correctly, was something like:

The Holy Hero with Too Many Enemies

Or something close to that, if loosely translated.

Within the span of a month, that man played the game nonstop. Eventually he managed to clear it. Even though he grew tired of losing over and over to the final boss.

Still, once he figured out the trick to defeating that ultimate boss, he died almost instantly. The cause, it seems, was starvation. He hadn't eaten for about a week and had focused only on the game. That's all there was to it.

So was that just a dream? Honestly, it feels too strange to confidently say it was my past life.

But well, it doesn't matter anymore. What's done is done. And only now, after so many years living in this isekai world as the Demon King, the final boss himself; have I come to realize it.
