Chapter 35 - Sincerity

"Phil Coulson?"

Anton was taken aback, staring at the slightly balding man in front of him. He mused inwardly, though they don't look alike, they're both balding.

Maybe men who like to smile all have the same weakness.

Coulson felt a bit uncomfortable under the scrutiny, sensing that the young man before him had an unfriendly gaze, always staring at his "weakness."

"I'm here regarding yesterday's events."

Coulson ignored Anton's unfriendly gaze, his demeanor still gentle.

He spoke plainly, "Please come with me for a while. I represent the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division, and I'd like to have a conversation with you."

"How do you want to talk?"

Anton crossed his arms, his attitude casual.

"Your companions are already waiting for you in the conference room,"

Phil Coulson said.

"Then let's go."

Anton raised an eyebrow, gesturing for Coulson to lead the way.

Hotel conference room.

Eddie, Annie, and Levis had arrived earlier and were seated at the conference table under the watchful eyes of the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division (SHIELD) agents.

Eddie examined them carefully, looking surprised.

Without Venom reminding him, he knew that these people had undergone special training, and their every move possessed a difficult-to-describe aura.

Thinking about their self-introduction, Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division.

An official department!

Most likely because of the battle that took place yesterday on the Golden Gate Bridge! Two monsters fighting, and Batman participating!

If such a sensational event couldn't alarm special departments, did they really think the Americans were just keeping these people at home doing nothing?

"Anton."

A few minutes later, they saw Anton, sleepy-eyed, slowly following a man as he walked in.

"Go on, Coulson, what do you want?"

Anton nodded to Eddie and the others, signaling them to stay calm. Then, he pulled out a chair and sat down, exuding an air of being in control.

"Hello, I'm Phil Coulson, from the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division. I'm in charge of this discussion."

Coulson introduced himself to Eddie and the others again, then said, "We understand what happened yesterday. Carlton Drake is a heinous criminal, and we will impose the most severe penalty on him. He will never leave prison again."

"You don't need to emphasize that. Whether you're involved or not, Drake is going to rot in prison for life."

Anton was quite certain, smiling as he said, "Relevant departments always show up after the fact. You're coming to us today, you aren't here to ask us about the Symbiote, are you? You should be asking the Life Foundation's experiment facility staff about that."

"That's part of the reason, since one of those present is currently the world's only Symbiote host." Coulson didn't lose his temper, even after being rebuffed. He looked at Eddie and Anton and said, "Besides that, our division hopes to strengthen our connection with you two."

"Strengthen our connection?"

Eddie was taken aback, staring at Coulson: "What do you mean?"

"The world isn't as peaceful and stable as you might think. The Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division (SHIELD) has made significant contributions to this," Coulson said. "Perhaps you two feel we've arrived late, but in reality, this is more like a test."

"A test for Eddie and me?" Anton asked.

"Yes, you've passed the test. Therefore, we hope you two will become special consultants for the Division, assisting us in resolving related incidents," Coulson said. "To that end, we will take responsibility for concluding this incident, including dealing with any future trouble."

"If we don't agree, you won't handle it?" Anton continued.

"No, we will still do so."

Coulson maintained a smile, very polite: "The Division's doors are always open to you both, at any time."

Anton said, "I'd rather see your sincerity before you say that."

"In fact, we've already shown our sincerity."

Phil Coulson said, "Oscorp asked me to apologize to Mr. Brock and promised not to harass Mr. Brock in the future. Regarding the Life Foundation shares, Norman Osborn promised to transfer ten percent to the Jameson Family."

After speaking, he also took out a check and handed it to Eddie: "Mr. Brock, this is also part of Oscorp's apology."

Eddie took it and looked at it; the string of zeros made his head spin.

Ten million!

And this was just an apology.

Eddie knew even better what ten percent of the Life Foundation shares meant.

A deal worth billions was just given to the Jameson Family, who Anton was backing. Oscorp was indeed rich!

"It does seem sincere."

Anton was also a little surprised. He touched his chin and politely declined: "Alright, regarding the Bureau's invitation, I will carefully consider it with Eddie."

SHIELD seemed powerful, but it was actually a mess, full of troublesome things.

Anton hadn't had his head caught in a door or been kicked by a donkey, so how could he willingly jump into that pit?

At the very least, before the HYDRA problem was resolved, SHIELD couldn't be considered a good place at all. What he could do now was, at most, what Coulson subtly suggested: keep in contact with each other.

"Then I won't bother you any further!"

Coulson understood what was meant by this and smiled slightly. He gave him his contact information and waved goodbye, "If you need anything in the future, you can contact me anytime."

"No problem." Anton nodded.

"Oh, right!"

Before Coulson left, he looked at Annie and Levis, who had been watching from the side, and politely said, "Miss Wei Ying and Mr. Levis, there's a confidentiality agreement that you need to sign."

"Uh..."

Annie and Levis exchanged glances, thinking this didn't concern them. They readily agreed.

A few minutes later, Coulson and the others all withdrew.

Anton and the others sat in the conference room.

Eddie repeatedly stroked the check, the corners of his mouth practically splitting his face. He couldn't stop grinning.

He never imagined that the biggest windfall of his life would come from something akin to extortion and compensation.

"Stop grinning!"

Anton rolled his eyes. "Now that things are settled, you should think about when you'll return to normal life!"

"What?"

Eddie was bewildered, "I'm already a multi-millionaire, and I still have to work?"

Anton's gaze turned unfriendly, "I've cleared the editor-in-chief position at the Daily Bugle for you. You aren't thinking of going solo on me, are you?"

"Wouldn't be too much to take a few days off, would it?"

Eddie tentatively asked.

"Three days!"

Anton said decisively, "After three days, you're back in New York, reporting for duty."

"No problem."

Although Eddie thought it was a bit short, he agreed without hesitation.

These past few days felt like he was touching a new world. Returning to a normal life could serve as a buffer, preventing excessive stress from leading to a quick letdown and a mental breakdown.

He paused, thinking about the man from the relevant department, the one called "Phil Coulson."

"Phil?"

Eddie pondered for a moment, looking at Anton with hesitation, "Are we forgetting someone?"

Somewhere in San Francisco, an apartment.

Phil Yurick was excitedly watching videos online about the "Monster Battle at the Golden Gate Bridge," jumping for joy on the floor.

He had sent emails to both Anton and Eddie since the news broke.

Neither had replied.

Phil didn't take it to heart. He just assumed his two superiors were busy handling some trouble, completely unaware that they'd been partying all night at a nightclub and had forgotten they even had a subordinate "lonely" in San Francisco.
