Chapter 14 - Shattered Hearts
The cell smelled of damp stone and blood. Moonlight slipped in through the barred window, as I sat on the cold damp floor, shivering, staring at the wall blankly.
The truth hurted, it hurted so much, how could he, I loved him, and I knew that deep down, he did too, he didn't believe me, he shattered my heart,
Maybe, if I could get out and talk to him, he would believe me, I wouldn't steal the dagger for anything, and I knew I was framed. By someone, someone within those very walls.
The sound of footsteps broke me from my thoughts.
"Merida"
My head snapped up, as I saw Maya, Maya crouched by the cell lock, keys in her hand and urgency in her eyes.
I tried stopping her. "Maya, stop, just go, I'm just trouble, you'll get into trouble, just leave...." "No, never" she whispered comfortingly.
They're going to decide your fate tommorow. You won't like the verdict. My heart pounded in my chest. "You believe me?..."
"I know you" She whispered, shoving the key into the lock. "But we have to move. Now.
The door creaked open loudly as I stepped out, geart racing, breath heavy with each step. We darted through the sleeping pack house. Outside the cool night air stung my lungs.
"Go" Maya urged. "Talk to Xavier. Make him listen before it's too late". She gave me a last look before quietly going back to her room.
I run towards his room, feet slapping against the cold tiles, heart racing. As I reached his chambers, my courage faltered, but I gathered it back up.
I peeked inside.
And my heart stopped.
Xavier sat at the edge of the bed. Shirt half unbuttoned, his expression turn between resistance and something darker. Seraphine was there - standing close, her silk robe slipling off one shoulder as her hand traced his chest. Her voice low seductive and poisonous. "You've been so tense, Alpha.... let me help you forget about her, she's just trouble.... hush"
His jaw clenched, but he didn't push her away. When she kissed him and he closed his eyes, something cracked in me.
My breath became sharper, anger pulsing through me, as I stepped back, the image burning into my mind like a cut.
I turned and ran - away from the pack house, away from Xavier as the painful truth hit me like a truck. Hours blurred. Forest. Dirt. Pain. The air was colder here, sharper. I crossed the final ridge to my old pack's land and froze, the village layed in ruins.
Homes torn apart, smoke invaded the fresh air. The ground.... littered with the remains of wolves. The scent of blood was thick, choking me.
I dropped to my knees, desperately searching for my gamily, if I would see their bodies, my eyes fell on it, a bracelet I gave my younger sister, lying there with blood stains on it.
I screamed, a choked sob escaping me. "No, no, no!!!"
Footsteps crunched behind me.
I turned and there they were. Warriors I didn't know, flanking a tall, broad shouldered alpha whose dark eyes glittered with something dark.
"What do we have here....". He said, his smirk curling slow, the moonlight casting over his dangerous features.
