Chapter 22 - Chapter 22 Xavier School for Gifted People

"Professor, you can't blame yourself for this; you didn't mean to do it.

Just like the principle you taught us, it applies to you too."

Wolverine sighed and offered comfort.

Back then, Mutants were feared by humans not only because a small number of Mutants used their abilities for crime.

Mostly, it was because when Mutants first started exhibiting their abilities, due to their inner fear, they couldn't control them, which led to their relatives, friends, and innocent people around them being implicated.

Every time these Mutant children were brought to the School, Professor would provide them with psychological counseling, helping them gather the courage to live again.

In fact, Professor was just like those children; his brain lost control due to epilepsy, which led to that tragedy, and he himself felt more pain than anyone else.

"I am not a child; if I make an Error, I must bear the consequences.

I cannot compensate the dead, I can only find a way to make life better for the living."

Professor looked at the group of children in front of him, a smile reappearing on his face.

If he hadn't seen these children and found hope again, he probably would never have been able to face his painful memories, drifting aimlessly until death.

"But Professor, so many years have passed; that School might have been taken over by the government long ago."

At this moment, George spoke up.

The location of Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters was indeed good, situated in the suburbs of Bronx, New York, not too remote, but also a certain distance from Manhattan, an area prone to incidents.

Even the Chitauri invasion didn't spread there.

Most importantly, according to his understanding, Bronx is in the northernmost part of New York, the most chaotic district in the entire New York, primarily inhabited by residents of African and Latin American descent.

If Hell's Kitchen was the most chaotic place in the wealthy district of Manhattan, then Bronx was the most chaotic place in the entire New York.

Various gangs were rampant, and the crime rate was one of the highest in the entire United States.

Such a place was perfect for him to fish in troubled Water and make money; even if he killed someone, it wouldn't attract the attention of the government.

However, after so many years, how could such a large Castle still be empty?

Professor X wiped away his tears and explained:

"Although I am wanted, it's not an overt warrant; the government doesn't want to blow things out of proportion, and they don't have enough evidence to arrest me.

So, overtly, my identity is still intact, and most of my assets are still there, including that Castle.

It's just that I cannot show myself, nor can I use any assets, otherwise the government could follow those clues to find and apprehend me…"

"I see."

George wasn't clear on this aspect, but after Professor X's explanation, he generally understood the gist of it.

Professor X's covert identity was the Principal of the Mutant School, but overtly, he was the heir of the renowned Xavier family, a true big capitalist.

In some aspects, he was even more influential than Stark Industries.

The rise of Stark Industries was mainly due to Tony's father, Howard; before that, it wasn't considered a very large corporation.

But the Xavier family was an ancient noble family, with a long history and deep roots.

Without concrete evidence, overtly arresting the heir of the Xavier family and confiscating all their property would create a sense of crisis among all old capitalists.

Because if they could confiscate the Xavier family's assets without evidence today, they could find a reason to confiscate theirs tomorrow, and then everyone would feel insecure.

And could the government provide concrete evidence of Professor's killings?

Of course not; Professor had epilepsy, his brain lost control, and he directly killed the people around him with his psychic powers. Even in surveillance footage, everyone suddenly collapsed and died, making it impossible to prove that Professor was the killer.

On the other hand, negative impacts also had to be considered. If it was confirmed that Professor, who had previously helped the government deal with crises multiple times and had been received and awarded by the President multiple times, suddenly killed so many people.

Then the government would also bear responsibility, their influence would decline, and even the President would be greatly affected.

Therefore, at that time, they could only conduct secret arrests and detentions, not openly, and the entire incident was even deliberately downplayed.

"If that's the case, it really is a good choice."

George pondered carefully and approved Professor X's suggestion.

The Westchester incident occurred twenty-five years ago, in 1984, when Tony Stark was only fifteen years old and had just enrolled in the Department of Electrical Engineering at MIT.

Captain Marvel Carol Danvers hadn't even become a pilot yet, Nick Fury was just an ordinary S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent, and Star-Lord Peter Quill was only six years old, with his mother still alive.

So, the Mutant School might really be empty and unattended.

It's estimated that the Police sent by the government at that time couldn't even find the Underground Room beneath the School.

"I have no objections, as long as the children are safe."

Gabriella also raised her hand in agreement. She felt that since Professor and George both thought it was feasible, then there should be no problem.

She was just a shallow-minded Mexican Nurse; her job was to take care of the children, not to express random opinions. She was very clear about her position.

Seeing that everyone agreed, Wolverine no longer objected.

In fact, how could he not want to go back to the School? It was once his haven.

As for Caliban, wherever Professor and Wolverine went, he would go, not caring about the specific location.

So, the large truck changed direction and headed straight for New York.

Since there were many children and none of them had identities, they didn't enter the city along the way, only purchasing supplies in some small towns along the road and resting in remote areas when they were tired.

After two days, they finally arrived in Bronx, northern New York.

Perhaps because he had come to terms with himself, Professor's condition had slightly improved. Although he still couldn't use his abilities as before, occasionally influencing the thoughts of ordinary people was not a problem.

This also made their journey much smoother.

During this time, to prevent being tracked, they changed trucks multiple times.

Selling the truck to one used market, then going to another used market to add some money and buy a different model of used truck, constantly switching.

After arriving in Bronx, they didn't go directly to the School, which was a Castle with four gardens converted by Professor. Instead, George and Wolverine disguised themselves and went to scout the area first.

The situation was indeed as Professor had expected; it had been empty and unoccupied, but because the Castle had been uninhabited for a long time, it felt much more dilapidated.

After confirming the School's safety, they waited until nightfall, then quietly took the children and climbed into the School, settling into the Castle's Underground Room.

The Castle's Underground Room had two levels. Besides Professor's Cerebro Chamber and the former X-Men training room, there were also more than a dozen empty rooms, which were enough for everyone to squeeze in and live.
