Chapter 7:"Goodbye"
"I'm fine, River," Lettie assured her. "Let's go, honey," River's mom's voice came from behind, signaling that it was time to leave. The sun began to set, casting a warm orange glow over the scene. They had spent the entire day together, and River's parents had made sure she enjoyed every moment with her friend.
River was not one to mingle with people easily, but Lettie had brought out a side of her that no one knew existed. "Ok mom," River replied, "I have to go now, Lettie." Lettie nodded in agreement, and they shared a big hug, but this time, there were no tears. "Feel free to come home," River's mom said, hugging Lettie. "I will, Auntie, I'm already missing your delicious food," she said with a pitiful sound. They laughed at her behavior. They broke the hug and waved each other goodbye.
River noticed Lettie still had the silver ring on her finger when she raised her hands to wave. She smiled at the realization and headed towards her parents' car. Her mom took the wheel, and her dad was already sitting in the passenger seat, looking tired as he waved at Lettie.
River was really happy her parents liked her friend, they were initially surprised she had a friend, especially given their different backgrounds, but they accepted her later because she proved to be a good girl who would visit their home often and enjoyed her mom's food.
She opened the back seat and sat down. The car sped off, and River gave her friend a last wave as they passed by.
"Emerald," a deep voice called out after the car sped off. Lettie, who had her back facing the person, knew who the owner of the voice belonged to because he was the only one who called her by that name. She had a weird expression on her face since she heard her name. She breathed in, forced a smile, and turned. "Brother," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
