Chapter 1 - CHAPTER 1 - The Savvy, The Cool, The Serious and the Jolly

The final bell rang, echoing through the hallways, and students began packing their bags. Some headed straight home, eager for the evening, while others lingered, moving in small clusters, chatting about plans or the latest gossip.

William, tech-savvy and clever but humble to a fault, slightly taller-than-average high schooler with messy blonde hair that falls just above his eyebrows. He usually wears a casual T-shirt, jeans, and his favorite pair of black-and-white shoes that are a little worn from constant use. What stands out most is the pair of oversized, giant glasses perched on his nose—thick, round frames that make him look a bit nerdy but also uniquely charming. They often slide down when he's focused on coding or tinkering with gadgets, which is most of the time, packed his bag with quiet efficiency. Today, he felt a flicker of satisfaction as he slipped into their favorite spot—a tucked-away corner of the schoolyard.

"Look who finally decided to show up," a familiar voice called.

Leo plopped down beside him with a grin. The ace of the school football team, Leo carried an effortless charm with his black well brushed slicked back hair. Despite his good looks and athletic reputation, he wasn't the arrogant, high-school-drama type. He had a big heart, loyalty that ran deep, and a mischievous streak reserved for friends. William had been the center of that loyalty since childhood.

"Hey," William said, smiling. "How's the star player today?"

Leo stretched lazily. "Busy, obviously. Coach tried to drag me to hang out with the team earlier, but I had… important things to do."

"Ah, yes, the very important business of… teasing people?" William raised an eyebrow, his smirk growing.

"You know me too well," Leo replied. "Speaking of which, where are Alliah and Brie hiding today?"

"Probably finishing teacher errands. You know how they are," William said, shrugging.

Leo groaned dramatically. "Boring! They better not escape my teasing today, or I'll be very disappointed."

William laughed softly. "I'm sure they'll survive… even if it means you drive them crazy first."

Leo nudged him playfully. "And you? You just sit there being all serious and techy? You're no fun, William."

"You know me," William said with a small smile. "Besides, I'd rather watch you get tangled in your own schemes than join in."

"Touché," Leo said, grinning. "But don't get too comfortable. One day, I'll rope you in. And you'll love it."

From the other side of the courtyard came a sharp voice. "You two!" Alliah strode up, A goth girl with violet-dyed hair cut in a practical wolf style that framed her sharp eyes. Hands on her hips, she shot Leo a glare. "I swear, if you've been teasing William again—"

Leo grinned mischievously. "Maybe a little. But you love it."

"I do not!" she snapped, though her lips twitched in spite of herself. "And you know it!"

Her seriousness contrasted perfectly with the playful energy around her. Brilliant and practical, Alliah had always been stubborn and blunt, traits that kept most people at a distance. But with this group, she had found a rare acceptance, a circle where she could just be herself.

Behind her, Brie appeared, radiant and warm. Beautiful, talented, and effortlessly charming, she was a famous singer and band leader, but she never let her fame define her. Her cheerful smile and jolly personality made her instantly likable, though she reserved her true self—the one who quietly adored William—for this small circle of friends.

"Hey! Did we miss anything fun?" Brie called brightly, waving as she approached.

Leo laughed. "You mean, did you miss me winning at life again?"

Brie rolled her eyes but grinned. "Someone's ego is bigger than his stats."

William chuckled quietly, watching her. She had a way of lighting up the group, making the corners of every conversation warmer, brighter. Only here, among these friends, did her shy, affectionate side come through.

Together, the four of them formed a balance: William, humble and techy; Leo, mischievous and loyal; Alliah, practical and sharp; and Brie, talented, kind, and quietly smitten. Each brought something unique to the group, and together, they were unstoppable—at least in their own little world.

The four of them were seated around their usual table, bags pushed aside, snacks scattered, and laptops open. William, as usual, was buried in his own world, fingers flying across the keyboard. The hum of his laptop filled the space while the others chatted around him. Other students passing by waved hi to Brie and she would wave back.

"So…" Leo began, leaning back in his chair with that trademark grin, "you won't believe what happened today."

Alliah's eyes narrowed immediately. "Knowing you, it's probably ridiculous," she said, already preparing herself for an eye-roll.

"Ridiculous?" Leo echoed mockingly, his grin widening. "Oh, it was absolutely serious. A girl gave me a love letter again."

Brie blinked, curiosity sparkling in her eyes. "Really?"

"Yeah," Leo said, leaning forward as if preparing to reveal the scandal of the century. "She—uh, she looked all nervous and cute, and gave me this folded piece of paper like it was some ancient artifact." He held up his hand dramatically, miming the act.

Alliah groaned. "And…?"

"I rejected her," Leo said firmly, leaning back and crossing his arms. "Obviously. I'm not interested in people who likes me just for… this." He gestured vaguely at his face.

Alliah practically spluttered. "Of course you did!" she has heard this hundreds of times, but she still threw her hands up in exasperation. "How do you know everyone you rejected are only after your non-existing looks?" Alliah added.

"Whoa, whoa 4 years of friendship and you still believe in my impossible looks? Also, I just feel it..." Leo replied while bouncing his eyebrows.

Brie tilted her head, her lips pressed together as a faint blush crept across her cheeks. "Wait… but your intention…?" she asked softly, almost hesitant. "You didn't… what, you didn't… just reject her to be mean?"

Leo's smirk softened. "No, Brie. I'm serious." His tone dropped into something more sincere. "I don't want someone liking me just because I'm… me. I want someone who actually sees me, inside. You know, personality, sense of humor, values… all that. If someone's only here for the outside, they're not the one."

William glanced up from his laptop, nodding subtly. "Makes sense."

Alliah's eyes widened slightly. "How exactly are you going to know if you keep rejecting them? affection always starts with something Leo it can be your face, your smarts, only time will tell what other traits you got that the other person will like. you can't just judge them based on their first impression."

"Okay that makes so much more sense..." William added.

Brie's blush deepened as she nodded, trying not to show just how much she agreed. "Yeah..."

Leo leaned back, satisfied with the reaction. "Exactly why I rejected her. She said she wanted to be my girlfriend because of my popularity. Popularity means nothing if it's fake. I want someone who chooses me, not my looks."

"Unbelievable." Alliah groaned, face-palming in defeat.

The three of them exchanged glances, astonished, even though they had heard it before. Somehow, it never got old—Leo's unwavering honesty and loyalty always left them a little speechless.

A few seconds of thoughtful silence passed before William's laptop pinged, interrupting their reflections. He glanced at the screen, a smile tugging at his lips, and answered.

"Hey, Dad!"

"William! My boy!" His father's cheerful, booming voice filled the space. "Listen, I won't be home for dinner tonight. Got a meeting—very important, can't cancel it. How's my favorite son doing?"

"I'm good, Dad," William said, trying to sound casual. "Everything's fine here."

"Of course it is!" his dad exclaimed. "So, uh… did you remember to say it yet?"

William raised an eyebrow. "Say what?"

"You know! 'Good luck' and 'I love you.' You didn't say it yet!" His father's voice was teasing, full of warmth.

William chuckled. "Alright, fine. Good luck, Dad. I love you."

"Ha! Finally! That's my boy!" His father laughed heartily. "Remember, kiddo, no matter what, stay curious and don't get caught in trouble."

William grinned. "Will do, Dad. Don't worry, I'll try not to get in trouble… too much."

"You better not!" His father's laugh echoed as he added, "And hey—don't forget, eat something! I know you get lost in that laptop of yours."

"I got it covered," William said. "Talk to you later!"

"Later, William! Love you, kiddo!"

The call ended, and the group burst into laughter. Leo nearly doubled over, unable to contain himself. Alliah tried to stifle hers behind her hands, but soft little giggles slipped out. Brie's laughter was more graceful, musical, filling the space warmly.

Once the laughter subsided, William looked up from his laptop, eyes twinkling. "So… since Dad's busy tonight, anyone want to check out his lab? He won't be there, so we can explore a bit."

The group exchanged hesitant looks.

"Aight," Leo said, shrugging. "But didn't your dad say that place is off-limits?"

"Yeah… I mean, I'd go if everyone goes. It's still only four in the afternoon," Brie added thoughtfully.

"Nope," Alliah replied firmly. "The last time we went into your dad's junk it was in your apartment, and we got caught. I didn't like it."

Leo leaned forward, grinning. "C'mon, Alliah. Adventure is calling. Don't tell me you're scared."

"I'm not scared!" she shot back, though her lips twitched. "I just… don't like getting caught, okay?"

William smiled encouragingly. "It'll be fine. We'll just look around."

Leo added with a wink, "Yeah, and I promise I won't let anything happen… mostly."

Alliah huffed but didn't object. Brie glanced at William, curiosity sparkling in her eyes. "Well… if William's going, I guess I'm in," she said softly.

Leo clapped his hands, grinning. "Now that's the spirit! Adventure time, gang!"

William chuckled, closing his laptop.

The group tidied up, unaware that this small, spontaneous decision would lead to far more than a simple afternoon adventure.

The afternoon sun was warm as the group made their way to the lab where William's dad work. Leo swung his backpack over his shoulder, walking with exaggerated swagger.

"Seriously, do you ever walk normally?" Alliah asked, her violet hair bouncing as she matched his pace.

"Why would I?" Leo shot back with a grin. "Walking normally is boring. Life's too short for boring walks."

Brie rolled her eyes, laughing lightly. William, trailing slightly behind, smiled without looking up from the tablet in his hand. "If we get caught, I'm blaming you first, Leo," he said dryly.

"Pfft. As if I'm the one who leaves digital footprints everywhere," Leo replied, waggling his eyebrows. "That's your thing, tech boy."

"Alliah's gonna drag you into trouble anyway," Brie added, glancing at the practical, stubborn girl walking just a few steps ahead.

Alliah crossed her arms. "Excuse me? I don't drag anyone anywhere. I just make sure everyone survives your stupidity."

Leo laughed, nudging her shoulder. "Sure, survival. That's what you call it."

William looked up from his tablet, smirking. "Actually, speaking of survival… I did some research about the lab today."

Alliah glanced back at him "Why would you research your own dad's lab, haven't you been there already?"

"It's a lab not a museum, Alliah." He pointed out.

"There's a lot more than just artifacts in there."

Brie's eyes lit up. "Really? Like what?"

"Well," William said, tapping the screen, "everything from ancient relics to maps of tombs Dad's explored. And some… let's say, weird contraptions he's building. The place is huge."

Alliah raised an eyebrow. "Weird contraptions? Like… traps?"

"Maybe," William said lightly, a playful glint in his eyes. "Mostly harmless… I think."

Leo smirked. "Mostly harmless, he says. Famous last words."

The group laughed as they continued down the street, the afternoon turning golden. On the bus, they found seats together near the back, chattering about everything and nothing.

"Do you think we'll get in trouble if your dad sees us, how are we even going to go inside in the first place?" Brie asked quietly, glancing at William.

"Maybe," William said, shrugging. "But Dad trusts me to a point… and he's not home, so it's fine." As he spoke, he lifted his hand, revealing the key to the lab.

Leo leaned back, stretching his arms across the seats. "Fine. Trouble's fun. Besides, it's our adventure, not Dad's."

Alliah groaned. "You and your sense of adventure."

Brie chuckled softly. "You're both ridiculous. I guess that's why these trips are fun."

William smiled quietly, looking out the window at the passing city streets. There was a calm excitement in the air, the kind only a secret little adventure could bring.

When the bus reached the outskirts of the city, William led the group down a quiet street, past overgrown hedges, and finally to a tall, modern building hidden behind a wrought iron gate.

"This is it," William said, grinning. "Dad's lab."

The group paused, taking in the sight. Even from the outside, it looked more like a museum than a regular building. Massive glass windows revealed shelves of artifacts, strange devices, and glowing screens.

"Wow," Brie whispered, eyes wide. "It really is huge."

Alliah muttered, "Yeah… and we're probably about to get in way over our heads."

Leo grinned. "Come on, Alliah, admit it—you're excited too."

"I am not excited!" she snapped, though a small smile betrayed her words.

William laughed softly, opening the side gate with his key. "Alright, let's go. And remember… don't touch anything unless I say so."

The four friends stepped inside, the cool air of the lab washing over them. Shelves of relics and artifacts lined the walls, glowing screens displayed maps and strange diagrams, and in the center, large contraptions hummed quietly. The adventure had officially begun.

The door to the lab closed behind them with a soft click, muffling the sounds of the outside world. The cool, slightly metallic scent of old artifacts and polished machines filled the air. Shelves upon shelves of relics lined the walls: ancient scrolls, glimmering gems, rusted tools, and items that looked like they belonged in museums. Strange contraptions whirred softly, their purposes inscrutable, screens flickering with data.

William led the group through the first section; a wide aisle lined with shelves of artifacts. "Alright," he said, gesturing with both hands. "Rule number one: don't touch anything without asking me first. Some of this stuff is ancient… and fragile."

"Fragile, sure," Leo said, already wandering toward a glowing device on a nearby table. "Or… super dangerous."

"Exactly why we're not touching it," William said flatly, walking over to intercept him.

Brie wandered over to a shelf of small statues, running her fingers lightly over the smooth surfaces. "These are amazing. Look at the craftsmanship… some of these must be hundreds, maybe thousands of years old."

"Alliah, look at this one," William said, holding up a peculiar artifact. "It's a scale model of some kind of ancient temple. See the inscriptions?"

Alliah leaned in, squinting. "Hmm… that's really intricate. Looks like a ceremonial site. Probably a replica of something your dad found in the field."

Leo, meanwhile, had picked up a small, spherical device that pulsed with a soft blue light. "Guys… this thing looks alive."

"Leo, put it down," Alliah hissed. "Do you want us to blow ourselves up?"

"Nah," Leo said, grinning, ignoring her warning. "I just want to see if it does anything." He tapped the sphere lightly, and it hummed, spinning in his palm before projecting a faint holographic map into the air.

"Whoa," Brie whispered, leaning closer. "That's incredible! It's… it's like a 3D blueprint."

William's eyes widened. "That's one of Dad's experimental mapping devices. It projects structural layouts of places he's explored… tombs, ruins, archaeological sites. Only works with his codes though, so—oh wait, you tapped it, didn't you?"

Leo smirked innocently. "Maybe."

Alliah groaned. "You will get us killed one day. I just know it."

Brie laughed softly. "Honestly, I kinda love it. It's… exciting."

William chuckled, setting the scale model back carefully. "This is only the first room. Wait until we get to the main wing. That's where the real treasures—and experiments—are."

Leo's eyes gleamed. "Now that sounds like an adventure. Come on, gang. Let's go see the good stuff."

Alliah muttered under her breath, "I hope nothing explodes."

Brie grinned, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. "Me too. But even if it does, at least we're together."

The group moved deeper into the lab, the light from glowing screens casting their shadows on the walls. Every shelf and cabinet seemed to whisper secrets, stories of civilizations long gone, artifacts with histories that spanned centuries. The air tingled with mystery, and the faint hum of the machines felt almost alive.

As they turned a corner, a large, covered object in the center of the room caught William's eye. He called on to everyone and without hesitation the group gathered around the large, covered chest in the center of the room. William carefully pulled the tarp off, revealing the chest's intricate carvings and ancient symbols.

"Whoa," Leo breathed, eyes wide. "This thing looks straight out of an adventure movie."

"All of this looks like an adventure movie," Alliah muttered, squinting at the chest. "I swear, William, your dad's life is ridiculous."

William smiled, brushing his fingers lightly over the carvings. "Yeah, it's… pretty amazing, honestly. Dad's collected so much over the years. Each item has its own story."

Brie stepped closer, running her hands over the smooth surface of the chest. "Look at this craftsmanship! Whoever made this… must have spent years on it."

Leo leaned over the edge, peering inside. "Well… What do you think is inside?"

William tapped the lock gently. "dunno, could be special?"

"Special, huh?" Leo said with a grin. "Special could mean anything. Gold? Jewels? Ancient… toys?"

"Ancient toys?" Alliah raised an eyebrow. "You're ridiculous."

"Hey, some ancient toys would be cooler than your boring textbooks," Leo shot back, making Brie laugh softly.

William opened the chest slowly, revealing layers of neatly organized items inside: small statuettes, scrolls carefully rolled and tied with ribbon, coins with intricate designs, and tiny trinkets from different eras.

"Wow…" Brie whispered, leaning closer to admire the details. "It's like a history museum packed into one chest."

"Exactly," William said, a hint of pride in his voice. "Everything here is unique. Some of these coins are over a hundred years old. The statues… some are replicas, but a few are originals."

Alliah crouched slightly to examine a small bronze figurine. "Look at the detail on this one… The sculptor's work is insane. I'd love to see the real thing someday."

Leo picked up a tiny carved box, opening and closing it repeatedly. "Imagine hiding snacks in something like this. I'd be rich."

Brie giggled, shaking her head. "Leo, focus. You're going to break something."

"Relax, I'm a professional," Leo said with mock seriousness, placing the box back carefully.

William smiled quietly at his friends' antics. "Don't you just love this place? You can explore, learn a little, and just… enjoy it. No rules except curiosity." Leo blurted out.

Alliah crossed her arms but had a small smile tugging at her lips. "Fine. But if we break anything, I'm blaming you, Leo."

Leo winked. "Deal. But let's be honest… if anyone's breaking something, it's probably going to be you sneaking a finger in where it doesn't belong."

Brie laughed lightly, covering her mouth. "You two are impossible together."

The group spent the next while quietly exploring the chest, taking out items carefully, examining carvings, inscriptions, and tiny details, and sharing stories about what they imagined each artifact's history might be.

Leo held up a small, delicate statuette of a warrior mid-leap. "I call this guy… Sir Jumpsalot."

Alliah groaned. "Really? That's the best name you could come up with?"

Brie giggled, holding up a scroll. "Well, Sir Jumpsalot does have a nice ring to it, I guess."

William laughed softly. "I think Dad would be proud… and probably roll his eyes at the same time."

They continued in this way, laughing, teasing, and marveling at the artifacts. For the afternoon, the lab became their own private museum, a place where curiosity, knowledge, and friendship blended perfectly.

The group continued exploring William's dad's lab, laughter and playful teasing echoing off the high shelves. Leo had found a small stack of bronze figurines, pretending to reenact an epic battle with exaggerated moves.

"Sir Jumpsalot charges the enemy!" he shouted, knocking over a tiny soldier figurine in the process.

"Leo! Careful!" Alliah hissed, rushing over to stop him. "You're going to break something!"

Brie laughed, crouching to examine a delicate scroll. "You two are like kids in a candy store. Honestly, it's adorable."

William moved between them, carefully picking up an ornate statuette. "Guys, just… remember, this isn't a playground. These are ancient artifacts, not toys."

Leo rolled his eyes dramatically. "Fine, fine. But I can't help it if adventure calls."

Alliah crossed her arms, scanning the room. "Adventure doesn't need to destroy history."

Despite the warnings, the group's antics continued. Brie discovered a miniature globe and spun it, imagining the journeys of explorer's past. Leo balanced on the edge of a shelf (carefully, for once), pointing to a strange device. William tried explaining its function, while Alliah teased him about obsessing over every little detail.

Eventually, the playful chaos led them to a tall shelf holding various family crests, small statues, and other decorative artifacts. Leo, in his usual energetic manner, leaned too close while gesturing wildly to illustrate a story. A slight nudge, a misstep, and a single piece of a crest slipped from the shelf.

It fell to the floor with a soft clink. William quickly bent down to pick it up. As his fingers made contact with the crest, a sharp shock shot through his body, making him jerk back slightly.

"Whoa! Did you guys feel that?!" William exclaimed, holding the crest carefully. His hair stood slightly on end, and his eyes widened.

Alliah and Brie looked at each other in question they both gave a confused look.

"Uh… maybe… maybe you shouldn't be touching things you're not supposed to?" Leo says while carefully removing his hand from the other artifacts.

William raised one eyebrow looking at him and then nodded, setting the crest on a nearby table, but he couldn't hide the strange tingling still running through his fingers. "Yeah… I think that's a sign. We should probably… call it a day in here."

All four of them shared a tense glance, the playful curiosity of the past hour suddenly tempered by a small but undeniable reminder: this lab, for all its wonder, still held surprises they weren't prepared for.

"All right," Alliah said firmly, smoothing her hair back. "Time to go before we break something else—or worse."

Brie nodded, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. "Agreed… maybe next time we explore, we stick to the safe stuff."

Leo grinned reluctantly, packing his energy into a quiet chuckle. "Yeah… safe. Sure. Let's go with that for now."

William carefully led the group toward the exit, the crest resting safely on a table as they left the lab, minds buzzing with excitement—and a newfound respect for just how unpredictable even a harmless-looking artifact could be.

The afternoon sun had started its slow descent as the group finally made their way out of William's dad's lab. The excitement from the exploration still lingered, but the shock from the crest earlier had reminded them to keep their curiosity in check.

"That was… actually incredible," Brie said, adjusting her backpack. "I can't believe how much your dad has collected. It's like walking through history."

"Yeah," William agreed, a small smile tugging at his lips. "I just wish I didn't get shocked at the end. That was… unexpected."

Alliah groaned, crossing her arms. "Unexpected is an understatement. your reaction almost gave me a heart attack, William."

Leo smirked, nudging her shoulder. "Relax. It's not every day you get to say your friend survived a miniature electric shock in a private museum."

Brie giggled. "Honestly, I had so much fun, though. Even with Leo almost breaking everything."

"Hey! I'm careful… mostly," Leo said, grinning proudly.

The group laughed as they walked toward the street, the lab fading behind them. The streets were quiet, the golden afternoon light casting long shadows on the pavement.

"So… everyone heading home now?" William asked, glancing at each of his friends.

"Yeah," Alliah said, adjusting her jacket. "I've got some homework to do, and my mom's expecting me for dinner."

"Same here," Leo said. "But first, maybe a quick snack? I need something to celebrate surviving the lab without breaking anything critical."

Brie looked up suddenly, and her eyes brightened. "I… I have to go a bit earlier. Someone's waiting for me."

As they approached the intersection, a sleek black sedan was already parked near the corner, in front of a minimart. Standing beside it was a sharply dressed man—her bodyguard, or maybe her butler—watching the street carefully.

"Time for me to jet," Brie said with a small smile. She turned to the group, extending her hand for the signature farewell. "Take care, you, guys!"

One by one, they all raised their fists in a playful, perfectly timed gesture. Fist bump! It was their signature "see you later" ritual.

"Bye, Brie!" Leo called, grinning. "Don't get bored in your fancy car!"

"Bye, guys! Text me if anything interesting happens!" Brie laughed, slipping into the backseat of the black sedan. The door closed with a soft thud, and the car started to pull away.

The three remaining friends watched as the car disappeared around the corner, then turned back toward their own directions.

"Alright," William said, turning toward his path. "Same intersection, different routes."

Leo fist-bumped him, grinning. "See you later, tech boy. Don't get magically zapped again."

Alliah smirked, giving both of them a quick fist-bump. "Seriously, I hate the word 'magical' but he's right, you know better than Leo."

With that, they each went their separate ways: Leo down the street toward his house, Alliah heading toward her own neighborhood, and William following the path back home, the sun now dipping lower in the sky.

Even in parting, there was a sense of camaraderie that didn't fade. Their afternoon adventure had reminded them why they enjoyed spending time together: laughter, teasing, curiosity, and the rare thrill of discovery.
