Chapter 1 - Chapter 1 - Starting Point

In Farrison, along Southgate West Road, a spring rain had just passed, and the mountains fifty kilometers outside the city were still damp.

Lucian did not like the rain. When it rained, the roads in the mountains became very dangerous, especially Ant Ridge, which was particularly steep. The abundant rainfall also washed out many hidden channels.

If a person fell, probably only a could survive.

The rain also caused him to experience insomnia. Lucian suffered from a severe sleep disorder; even the slightest sound could affect his ability to fall asleep.

Ding dong.

A text message popped up on Lucian's phone; he saw it was a happy birthday message from his mother.

"You are already twenty-six."

Lucian suddenly realized something. Today was his twenty-sixth birthday, but he had lived for fifty-two years.

Perhaps it was a case of good deeds being rewarded. The anti-drug police officer, who was also twenty-six years old in his previous life and had sacrificed himself while arresting drug dealers, had transmigrated to a world that was similar to, yet completely opposite from, his previous life.

This world was much the same as the previous one, speaking the same common tongue, and having the Quinn, Hann, Tange, Sonne, Yulan, and Fael dynasties.

During the Jaelin era of the Fael Dynasty, when the Holy Roman Empire still existed, when France had not yet raised its hands in salute, when steam had just appeared, when the First Industrial Revolution had not yet begun, and when Great Britain was still a second-rate European power.

In the forty-fifth year of Emperor Jaelin's reign, the Emperor ascended to immortality.

The following year, the Fael Dynasty fell, and the world descended into chaos.

The difference lay in the existence of extraordinary power; rulers throughout history had all been powerful, extraordinary beings.

This power was called .

While those with extraordinary abilities could not live forever, could be passed down. After each powerful individual died, their remains yielded relic-like objects. These could be precious pearls, jade seals, or even swords, spears, and halberds.

Historical records from the Vernal Epoch state:

"The spirit resides in the marrow, and the essence condenses into the bones, whose patterns resemble the ancient astral diagrams, and whose texture is like cold jade from the Kun peaks."

The items inherited with were collectively called .

Developing allowed people to absorb and gain extraordinary power; a small number of people might even awaken this power on their own.

Lucian was born in modern times. His family was a peasant family in the western part of the Southern Seas. His father had served in the army and went to work in the city after his discharge. His mother was a textile worker. The family property consisted of a two-story house and two acres of land, with an annual income of three to four hundred thousand credits.

The nation was extremely powerful in this world, so he could also benefit from it. In a working-class family, one person working could support five people, and a husband and wife working could live a comfortable life.

In the wake of the catastrophe, the economy regressed by fifty years in just ten.

Lucian had already graduated from university and returned to his hometown to become a border police officer.

After four years of service, he was now the platoon leader of the reinforced platoon at the outpost, with the rank of lieutenant.

Their daily work was similar to that of a fire lookout, spending most of their time patrolling the mountains, not to observe fires, but to see if any were crossing the forest.

Today he and Lukas returned from the outpost after a rotation.

"Be careful not to fall into the ditch," Lucian reminded his follower behind him, Lukas, a twenty-two-year-old intern police officer.

He was the nephew of Lucian's superior. Because patrolling the mountain was dangerous, he was specially assigned as Lucian's subordinate.

Lucian was considered the strongest person at the border post, and following him ensured basic safety.

Today, they returned from their post in the deep mountains and forests for a rotation.

Lukas was holding his phone, communicating with the police emergency center.

"Brother Lucian, we just received word that a fugitive might be hiding in these mountains. What should we do?"

"What fugitive?"

"An killed someone in Linden City." Lukas looked fearful as he spoke. "I hope we don't run into them."

Lucian didn't even blink, and said, "Don't worry about it, just consider it a meritorious deed if we encounter them."

He was also a , with the ability of , allowing him to manipulate forty grams of weight within a one-thousand-meter radius as easily as his own arm.

Those possessing high-risk that were on record had to report when entering or leaving county towns, capital cities, or other similar locations.

The two walked along the mountain path, their rain boots making a pat-pat-pat sound as they stepped on the muddy road. This sticky road was actually the most slippery; the most serious injury he had suffered as a border policeman was slipping and falling into a culvert.

"If I catch the fugitive, I should be able to get promoted directly, right?"

Lukas started daydreaming even before he saw anyone.

His was only nine points, making him a . The official ranks of armed police soldiers required at least ten points of , which was equivalent to a .

was like education. In combat, you needed to be at the to become a lieutenant, at the to become a field officer, at the to become a senior colonel, and the was a mandatory requirement for becoming a general.

Lucian scored thirty-five points, the highest in the entire border station.

"Your uncle is the duty captain, the third most important person in the station. He'll be promoted to a full-fledged position after a few more years."

Lucian reminded him, "Practice diligently recently, so you don't fail the assessment because your is too low. If you can get eleven points, you'll basically pass."

"If I had eleven points of vitality, I would go to a big city like Caldwell City. No one would stay here exposed to the wind and rain and bitten by mosquitoes."

Like many young people from small towns, Lukas longed for big cities.

He changed the subject and asked, "I heard from my uncle that Brother Lucian graduated from the Imperial Academy in the Capital, so why are you still here?"

A clueless, emotionally inept fool.

Lucian smiled, showing no anger, took the rifle from his shoulder, and released the safety.

Lukas was startled, and before he could beg for mercy, he heard the grass in the distance begin to shake violently.

Brush, brush!

As if he had anticipated this, Lucian raised his gun and aimed at the bushes in the distance, the muzzle moving steadily and slowly.

A dark shadow flew past quickly, approaching them in a zigzag pattern.

It seemed to know that a gun was being aimed at it and could predict the trajectory of the gun and the point where the bullet would land.

Startled, Lukas shouted, "Brother Lucian, something is running towards us!"

The development of life was essentially evolution, and the ultimate goal of evolution was called .

Every dynasty gave birth to an , who was both a symbol of the dynasty's prosperity and the beginning of its demise.

After a dynasty fell, existed in the form of special biospheres, and the creatures that were born and reproduced in these biospheres were called .

Twenty years ago, the number of these suddenly surged. Countless that had never been seen before appeared out of nowhere and kicked humanity off its position as the world's overlord.

Beyond the borders of the Last Man Alliance, the world had become a paradise for . Humanity could only build city-states and eke out a living on the ruins of the old era.

The Last Man Alliance was the last pure land that belonged exclusively to humankind.

Lucian's father and elder brother died in the catastrophe twelve years ago, and now only he and his mother, who had a heart condition, remained.
