A lonely man sat on a hospital bed while connected to different machines. He was not breathing well. The nurses came to check and adjust his medication every hour, but they they knew there was no hope for the man.. While his breathing was very rough, his eyesight was still well off. He was reading a new novel, released by an anonyms writer. The story was about the dragons, vampires and human, and the Faye nations going to war against the Demons across the desert. The book ended with the death of the two main characters, a dragon male and his Faye wife. They died and left a girl and her baby brother in the care of the king and queen, their grandfather and grandmother. The fairies and Pixies all under were all under the rule of the older lady, as this kingdom was under a matriarchy. When they received the news of her daughter and son in laws death, she was unable to function for a while. She was in all sorts of pain, to loose a daughter was the worst for her. She didn't know how to explain this to her granddaughter. Eventually she got up and had a servant call for her husband and the child. Her husband had a better understanding and relationship with the children, after all, She was a ruler and had to work all the time. When he got there, she explained and gave him the to grieve, and asked him how to tell the children. She did not best know how to explain to a 2 year old.
He also read about the human life in the human capital, the slums and the good king who was on friendly terms with every one after the war. He wished to live a proper life as a noble who was in a position to help those that were less fortunate than him.
The old man finished his book and put it down. He thought of the life he had lead up until now. He joined the military right out of high school at 18 years old and stayed there for 27 years while moving up the ranks. He became a corporal at 25 years old and spent the next 37 years as corporal and had to retire due to a sickness. He had cancer, and he thought it had been in remission, but aafter deciding to spend the next 16 years going around the world, he had no regret. He learned many things to save money while going around the country. He made paper for the poor, he learned how to forge gun pieces, and other metal parts, he even learned how to dye cloth, there was many more things that he had learned to make and do around the world.
Earlier when he put the book down, it had shown the love of parents in the human capital who were highest in court rank after the king. It was the kings own brother who had lost their only child in the war. As they progressed the story, it showed how they adopted a child and gave them so much love, just for that child to stab them in the back and betray the human nation. The boy tried to overthrow the king and was caught by his son and tossed into prison as the only punishment as a favor to his brother.
While his thoughts had run rampant, he started hearing a voice calling to him. "Please save my family. Only you can?" it repeated itself a couple times before the old man in the bed understood and saw the hazy image of a child near the book he put down just a bit a go. He looked at the 17 year old boy with assurance.
"I want to save them, but with this body, it will be nearly impossible", he replied. "I will give you a dragon body with human transformation, several skills related to your knowledge learned here on earth and a few other goodies. And since I wrote the book only you have picked up, you will have higher brain functions than normal dragons. When you go, please tell my parents I loved them. And please save the little girl in the forest near the human territory" he said as he started to fade. After the boy was gone, the old mans body started to fail. He had signed a "DNR" with the hospital so that they wouldn't waste time trying to keep him alive. He had even donated the money the hospital didn't charge for his care to a children orphanage. That orphanage had a really outstanding 2 year old boy. He was an over-achieving orphan who the old man wanted to find a family.
The child went on to become a genius that would save a lot of people with his research. The old man went to sleep for good on earth but after what felt like forever, he woke up surrounded by trees. He sat up only to see a little girl with gossamer wings run behind him.
