Chapter 20 - Voice

Because the voice was so faint, even Marcus's superhuman hearing could only make out some indistinct content intermittently.

"Shadow..."

"Stop..."

"Chaos..."

Marcus's expression changed slightly when he picked out these few words. After a moment of hesitation, to hear the content more clearly, Marcus slowly approached the sun in the sky.

But before he had taken a few steps, Marcus could feel a transparent barrier spanning between him and the sun. He reached out and touched the transparent barrier, finding it extremely tough. Even with all his strength, he could not budge it in the slightest.

Since his physical body could not pass through the barrier, Marcus prepared to use his mind power. Concentrating his mind, his mind power transformed into invisible spikes, rapidly rushing towards the barrier in front of him. But what happened next exceeded Marcus's expectations. The mind power constructs, which originally appeared milky white in Marcus's eyes, were like a clay ox entering the sea. They vanished instantly upon contact with the invisible barrier, as if swallowed by something.

Without hesitation, Marcus immediately retracted his mind power. Since neither his physical body nor his mind power could pass through, Marcus decided to study the barrier.

However, just as Marcus was about to examine the barrier closely, a powerful gravitational force suddenly appeared out of nowhere behind him. Before Marcus could react or move, he was pulled out of this dream by the powerful gravitational force. The strong gravity even dispelled the malicious gazes that had been lurking in the darkness.

A few seconds later, the gravity dissipated, and the space returned to a state of dark silence.

After an unknown amount of time passed, an almost imperceptible sigh echoed in this space, then returned to tranquility.

Inside his room on the Severian, Marcus opened his eyes, slowly sat up from the bed, and looked around. He found himself back in the cramped, small room. Marcus breathed a sigh of relief; in the dark space of the dream, malicious gazes were everywhere, which put immense mental pressure on him. Now, looking at the steel walls around him, Marcus felt a long-lost sense of security.

Peeking through the bars on the iron door at the Ultramarines standing guard outside, Marcus noticed that they had no particular movements. After waiting a while, no fully armed big men rushed in from outside the door to pin him to the ground and press a bolter against his head.

It seemed that, in their eyes, he had merely been lying in bed for a while, with no unusual phenomena. Marcus thought to himself.

Lying back on the bed, closing his eyes, Marcus first used his mind power to thoroughly examine his body. He confirmed that no tentacles or horns had grown on him. After all, this was the Warhammer Universe, and who knew if the place he had just been in was a dream or some corner of the Warp. If he had been tainted by the power of the Warp and grown tentacles or horns, that would be the end of it. After all, he was currently on an Ultramarines' battle barge...

Feeling relieved, Marcus began to recall everything he had seen and heard in the dream. Firstly, when he first transmigrated to the Warhammer Universe, Marcus had entered that dark space and seen the sun in the sky. However, at that time, Marcus's consciousness was muddled, and after waking up, he had gone through a fierce battle, so his impression of the situation at the time was not very deep.

But after entering the dream again this time, Marcus did recall some details from back then. Firstly, in that initial dream, the figure suspected to be the Emperor, sitting on the Golden Throne within that sun, had indeed cast a gaze upon him.

Regardless of whether that figure was the Emperor or not, he was definitely being watched by something. Unlike purely physical sci-fi universes, the Warp exists in Warhammer. Anyone, from a common hive city worker to a gene-seed primarch commanding tens of thousands of Astartes, could be targeted by entities from the Warp. Ultimately meeting a tragic end.

Thinking of this, Marcus's head began to ache. He couldn't help but complain to himself again...why Warhammer!?

After complaining, Marcus calmed down slightly and began to analyze the few words he had heard in the dream.

"Shadow"

"Stop"

"Chaos"

Due to the limited information, Marcus could only try his best to guess the meaning of these three words. Among them, "Shadow" could have many possible interpretations. However, combining it with the original game's plot, two interpretations were most likely. That is, the dark projection of the Hive Mind in the Warp, or the evil entities within the Warp.

As for "Stop," its meaning was also unclear. Marcus was still unsure whether the intermittent, indistinct words were even directed at him. But since he was making a guess, Marcus would temporarily assume so. What did that figure want him to stop?

Tyranids?

Thousand Sons?

Or both?

Or something else?

Marcus's eyes flickered as he pondered. As for the last word, "Chaos," its meaning was clear and required no further speculation.

However, what Marcus was most concerned about now was why that figure, suspected to be the Emperor, would say these things to him. Perhaps his transmigration attracted the Emperor's attention? And did the Lord of Humanity want to use the power of him, someone not from this world?

Thinking of this, Marcus quickly shook his head. He was just a small character who had just transmigrated and might not even be able to defeat a fully armed Astartes. How could the Emperor, the leader who commanded the Imperium of Man spanning the entire galaxy and was worshipped by trillions of Imperial citizens, possibly rely on his strength?

After pondering for a while, Marcus, unable to figure anything out, simply stopped racking his brain and closed his eyes to rest. This time, he did not enter that dark space again.

After resting peacefully for more than ten minutes, outside the door, in the corridor, a series of neat footsteps sounded. Clearly, these people were coming for him.

Marcus stood up agilely and went to the door. Looking through the bars, an Ultramarines wearing power armor, draped in a black robe, and wearing a terrifying skull helmet was striding towards Marcus's room.

Behind him, several fully armed Ultramarines followed. Marcus recognized the Chaplain's identity at a glance.

Leandros.
