Chapter 1 - 1 Bad Luck

A boy sits at a desk in a windowless room, the only noise is the scratching of a pen and a broadcast. In front of him lies a pile of crumpled papers, and a fresh piece of paper which he crumples and tosses into the pile, then he takes a new paper from the dwindling pile.

(What should I write to my family?) For a few moments the boy taps a finger against his chin while he mutters, "now that I think about it they haven't replied in a while, maybe I should ask about their safety."

After coming up with an idea he quickly gets to work, scribbling a few lines of words on to the paper.

...

Dear Grandpa and Mom,

How has your time spent in Liuciela been? I've heard the cities have great tourist attractions and even greater medicine. I hope the war against Wrighten hasn't affected you and Mom, and I hope you two stay safe during your stay there. Back here I am doing okay, I learned how to cook a few dishes, but I haven't cooked them well. Last month I have decided to go try and make some friends, so don't worry about me being lonely.

Love,

Qiony

...

Qiony sighs, wondering if it really was that difficult to write a letter to family. He grabs the envelope on the right bend of his desk and stuffs the letter inside the evelope.

Across his room he takes a green hoodie from the closet and stuffs it over his head.

After Qiony almost tripped down the stairs his grip on the railing tightens, sending him into a swing towards the railing, smashing his face against the wall.

At the bottom of the stairs he takes a small black satchel and stuffs the sealed envelope inside. The sound of pattering rain hits the ground, and thunder can occasionally be heard.

After taking an umbrella from somewhere in the closet he opens the front door.

Walking through the rain it only takes a few minutes for him to reach the bus stop, but it takes a 15 more minutes for a bus to pass by.

The bus passes by and splashes a bit of water from the road towards the sidewalk. Muttering under his breathe he sounds mad. "Finally, the bus is here."

The bus has few people, to the point it could be considered empty. After paying the 3 Eo note fare he awkwardly passes the other two passengers and walks towards the back end of the bus.

He takes a seat and starts reading a book he left in his satchel. Despite taking this book out he doesn't read it after he sees someone enter the bus.

She has sienna coloured skin, and her eyes are of a hazel colour. She has long messy hair, cascading from a simple ponytail, the colour of the hair is sectioned into areas made up of dark brown and beige, and as some kind of ancestral quality she has cat ears.

She is wearing black shorts that reach just above her knees and a purple t-shirt with a fish design.

She also approaches the back of the bus and notices his stare. She approaches him and tries to mimic what it sounds like when someone tries to sound tough.

"Hey, what are you looking at? Am I just that captivating?"

She proceeds to pose like she is getting a picture taken, she clearly isn't serious, but nevertheless she still tries to contain a laugh.

The bus continues moving, jolting her backwards and almost causing her to fall.

After that she took the seat next to him and turns to talk to him. She is about to speak, but she shuts her mouth, causing a long period of silence to follow.

"Johnny what are you out during this storm?" Her voice is filled with curiosity and she glances at his book, but she looks away from the pages.

He looks towards the window, the storm outside is only showing signs of getting worse.

He thinks, fumbling with the creased pages of the book. "Now that I think about it, I forgot why i'm here..." His mood is now a little gloomy now that he realized he forgot.

He stays silent for just a bit before changing the topic.

"Also have you ever thought why my name is spelled as Qiony instead of Johnny?"

She glances at him with her hazel eyes before looking away from Qiony. She unsuccessfully rolls a coin, dropping it on the floor.

"…" The bus ride is silent other than the fact that the rain was pattering against the bus as it travels along the streets, they sit there in silence.

He watches the world turn dark as they enter a tunnel. About halfway through the old concrete tunnel the bus stops and all of the passengers get up simultaneously.

"Why is everyone getting up?" her voice is now at the volume of a whisper, wondering if they are meant to follow.

"Maybe the bus broke down?" He tries to sound convincing but he doesn't seem to be able to believe it, a hint of skepticism behind his voice.
