Chapter 9 - Doomclock

One year later.

On the first floor of the Tower of Infinite Enlightenment stood one lone man facing the sky with an indifferent expression.

Next moment, Wang Chen turned his head away from the sky and sighed while letting out the long breath he was holding.

"Just how fast time passes..."

He still vividly remembered when he first arrived on this floor, fighting the lone resentment ghost with his fireball spell.

Suddenly the face of a young boy flashed through his head—those dark eyes searching for slight hope in the sea of hopelessness.

Wang Chen couldn't stop himself from wondering how his first disciple was doing.

To Lin Huang, only a moment may have passed, but Wang Chen, possessing the body of this miraculous avatar, had spent a year on the first floor constantly fighting bloody battles that would make even the heart of a Foundation Establishment expert shake with fear.

Suddenly however, he shook his head. There was no need to think about all these things. After all, after one year of constant fighting, he had finally managed to slay every single resentment ghost, thereby breaking his own record by six months—an unprecedented feat.

Yes, just a moment ago, Wang Chen had finally managed to slay the last of the remaining resentment ghosts.

Some of you might think what Wang Chen had done was incredibly stupid. If there was a reward for breaking his own record, he could have cheated by purposely breaking his record by one day or hell, even one second.

Wang Chen wasn't stupid. He had indeed thought of taking advantage of the tower using this tactic, but however, he immediately gave up once the tower warned him. Wang Chen took the tower's warning seriously—he didn't want to offend such an eldritch entity for no reason at all, even when he was supposed to be the master.

Unwilling to think about useless things, he focused on the scene in front of him. The once mighty first floor, which appeared as if it was a world of its own, was filled with gray fog. Wang Chen himself was very close to being devoured by it.

Wang Chen didn't exactly know about the origins of this fog or from where it emerged, but he knew it was controlled by the tower to force all the resentment ghosts to attack him. As such, he had named it the Fog of Inevitability. All those who touched it would be slowly corroded by it, bone by bone, resulting in a painful death.

It was then the moment he was waiting for finally arrived.

Multiple blue windows flashed in front of his eyes one after the other.

Looking at the first window itself, his eyes couldn't stop but twinkle. Each of these skills was otherworldly—if placed in the outside world, bloody battles would erupt.

It was only because of these skills that he managed to clear the floor in a year's time. Wang Chen felt he could have even cleared it in six months if he didn't waste time at the start hunting scattered resentment ghosts.

After gazing at his status for a couple of minutes, Wang Chen was able to calm down once he remembered the fact that all these skills belonged to the avatar but not him. Finally sighing, his gaze moved to the next few windows.

It was time to see what was the reward for speedrunning the floor.

[Congratulations, master, for breaking your own record and clearing the world filled with resentment ghosts in record time.]

Wang Chen didn't care about the tower's words and moved to the next window.

[Please choose one reward from below.]

[Reward 1 - Any random skill from your status window.]

[Reward 2 - Cultivation progress of one year in a low-tier sect.]

[Reward 3 - Any random item of certain value from this world.]

[Reward 4 - A random gift given by the tower.]

Although incredibly excited, Wang Chen didn't immediately choose but gave each option some thought.

That took one second... and he chose the first reward. Other than that, anything else didn't make sense.

All the skills that he had managed to learn during this run were incredible. Letting go of any of these skills would be plain stupid.

[Choice confirmed]

[Randomly selecting skill, please wait...]

A golden lottery wheel with the names of all the skills appeared, slowly spinning. Watching this scene, Wang Chen's heartbeat couldn't help but accelerate automatically.

Wang Chen's expression would comically change as the arrow briefly stopped over the skill that he wished for the most. Please, god, let it be Reality Script.

This skill was too broken. He could change the reality with it—change fire to ice, and ice to rain.

It was simply too broken.

While Wang Chen prayed, an imaginary cashing sound came and the wheel finally stopped spinning.

Filled with nervousness, Wang Chen opened his eyes and immediately wanted to curse at the top of his lungs.

[Doomclock (Rare) learned]

Although he heard the prompt, Wang Chen felt nothing. He simply stared into the air with a dazed look in his eyes.

Why couldn't it be the skill that I wanted...

No matter how much he complained, reality was not going to change.

While he was lost, the tower's voice echoed:

[The mission has been completed.]

Then Wang Chen felt his body simply dissolve into particles of light and his vision go blank.

When Wang Chen was able to look around himself, he was back in the dojo, exactly at the same moment when he had left. His disciple was still under the Bodhi tree in deep focus.
