Chapter 37 - Showdown Against Jack (1)

Inside the secret room of the library, both Daymond's soul and the library caretaker saw Ray leaving in a rush. Daymond's soul's eyes became thin, and no one knew what he was thinking—but the caretaker knew exactly what it was.

And so the caretaker said, "Do not ever try to make an enemy out of Ray Walker."

Daymond's soul asked, "Why? And how do you know what I was thinking?"

The library caretaker looked up, remembering what his master had told him that day. Then the caretaker said, "This was the warning given by your ancestor long ago. In the vision, my master told me—in 9 out of 10 visions he saw—he saw disaster fall upon the whole kingdom in the upper realm because of Ray. And 6 out of 10 were because of you.

Maybe you want to take over his body, maybe you want to extract memories from him, or maybe you want to capture him and make things out of him. There are many more things you might try, and these have led to huge disasters. So my master told me specifically—if Daymond tries to make a move, kill him on the spot."

After finishing those words, the library caretaker released a killing intent so heavy that Daymond felt very small. Daymond knew, in that moment, that he would die if he said anything contrary. It also seemed clear the caretaker would execute him without hesitation if he ever made a move against Ray—even once.

Daymond gulped and then asked, "Then what is that 1 out of 10 chance to survive?"

The caretaker said, "Either make friends with Ray or do nothing. Making friends will bring benefits, my master told me. But if we do nothing, then our karma with Ray will eventually close, and we will not face any disaster either. We are declining in the upper realm, so we need future heroes like Ray by our side. So you better make friends with him—or else, there are many better candidates to take your place."

Daymond nodded and said nothing.

...

Ray came out of the library's secret room and went directly to Diana and Alicia. Diana and Alicia saw Ray's anxious face as he came running. Ray grabbed Diana's hand and told her they needed to leave immediately. He had gotten a message from the caretaker and said they had to move now. He would explain everything on the way.

On their way to save Robert, Ray told them in detail what Daymond had actually said to him. He explained everything that had happened—that it was Queen Elizabeth who had betrayed and poisoned the real King Daymond. That the vice leader of Montclair had taken over Daymond's body. That the true soul of Daymond was still fighting Jack's soul from time to time. He also told them about the other dukes and their men being poisoned. And now, Jack had invited Robert because he needed to deal with him in order to get to Ray.

Hearing all of that, Alicia was in tears and began to say, "I knew it. I knew something was wrong. I'm going to go and get my other concubine sisters to help you both."

Ray shook his head and replied, "How will you know who is our enemy and who is not? The other concubines might be acting as secret agents of Elizabeth or Jack."

Hearing that, Alicia nodded, let go of the idea for now, and dashed forward to help rescue her husband.

Ray began to explain his plan to them on their way—what they would do and how.

...

Meanwhile, on the other side of the palace, Robert had been invited to a different hall—one not usually used when a duke visits the palace. Inside the hall, Robert saw King Daymond and his wife, Elizabeth, sitting beside each other.

Daymond then said, "Welcome, Robert. I have been waiting for you."

Robert gave the special salute of the kingdom to Daymond and said, "Your Highness, why have you invited me so urgently?"

Daymond replied, "It is very urgent, because your son has created an invention that I want. And I want your son to hand that invention over to me, along with the rights to produce and sell it."

Robert tilted his head to the left in confusion and asked, "What did my son make? I have no idea what you're talking about."

Daymond replied, "It is a communication device."

Robert asked again, "Communication device? What is that?"

Daymond answered patiently, "It seems you don't know that your son has created an amazing invention. Okay, I will tell you. It is an invention that lets you talk from far away."

Robert nodded repeatedly in understanding. Then he showed something to Daymond that he was wearing on his wrist. "You mean you're talking about this wristwatch that my son created? This watch and the earbuds attached to the side of the wristwatch are amazing. My wife gave it to me as a gift. This is my son's first invention. Why should I give the rights to you, Your Highness? At most, you can buy the product from Ray. I cannot give the rights to you." Robert shook his head and didn't want to deal with this any further.

If Ray were there, he would have been shocked—because Diana had clearly said she would give it to her bodyguards.

Looking at the wristwatch, Daymond's eyes filled with greed. Jack—who had come to this world 50 years ago—had been trying to figure out how to recreate telephones and computers in this world. He had tried to build his own invention team, but in all those 50 years, he had managed to make only one tower to get a signal. But even that was too slow for him. The inventors in this world were far too slow and had no idea how to educate themselves.

Jack was frustrated and wondered how to speed up his technological progress. He started calling on the inventors of this world, but they couldn't see the future as he did. They thought Jack was talking about something impossible.

So Jack decided he needed to increase his power—and take over a kingdom. He chose one of the kingdom and started planning its takeover. He managed to control the leaders, but his plan had flaws. One was that the inventors of this kingdom were already enemies of the nobles and wanted nothing to do with the royal court. The second flaw was that one of the dukes had discovered he was being poisoned—and had quickly healed himself using some unknown method.

Jack sighed and looked at Robert and said, "Why don't you listen to me? Do it!"—as if commanding someone else.

From the shadows, someone emerged and attacked Robert from behind.
