Chapter 37 - Escape Plan

"Waiting is not an option…" Long before considering Jonathan as her last choice to escape this horrifying town and the clutches of her controlling parents, Wednesday acted on her own and tested if luck was on her side.

But as she expected, it wasn't easy at all to get out of this place.

Not only was it complicated to use the buses, but there was also no extra means of travel she could hire to escape on her own.

Wednesday carefully reviewed her possibilities and only after a few minutes realized she didn't have many options.

And just when she thought she had a chance to reach the bus station that was half an hour away from her location, an unfortunate encounter occurred when some religion fanatics decided to bother her.

She quickly resolved the problem, but she couldn't get rid of the trouble that followed.

"Excuse me Sheriff, she must have slipped away. Miss Addams, time to go." Principal Larissa Weems arrived at the cafeteria just in time to take Wednesday, who seemed to have caused trouble.

When Sheriff Galpin heard Wednesday's last name, his expression changed and he said in a much drier tone: "Hold on a moment, miss."

Wednesday stopped and turned toward the Sheriff.

"You're an Addams? Don't tell me your father is Gomez Addams… That man should be in prison for homicide." Just as Sheriff Galpin was about to say another word, his eyes widened in slight surprise.

Sensing a sudden change in temperature, Wednesday turned to see a figure dressed in black.

"The hunter is here, what a coincidence."

"Miss Addams, likewise." Jonathan walked toward her, looked at the boys on the ground, and then at Sheriff Galpin, who seemed puzzled by his appearance.

"Who are you?" asked Sheriff Galpin with hostility.

"I'm the one taking jurisdiction from you in the tourist murder cases. I'll be in charge from now on, so I came to inform you to stop investigating these cases." Jonathan said in a serious tone while pulling out a court order.

Sheriff Galpin took the paper but didn't read it and said: "The people of this town trust me to keep them safe. Do you expect me to tell them a stranger will be in charge of the case?"

"I expect you to." Jonathan said before turning and smiling at the principal, who immediately grew nervous.

"Well, then you don't know me very well."

Wednesday looked more closely at Jonathan and noticed traces of blood, a weapon on his waist, and long knives. This made her think of the saying she herself had mentioned moments ago: "Never bring a knife to a sword fight, unless it's hidden."

The excitement of getting involved in whatever Jonathan was investigating made Wednesday forget her plans of escaping the town for a moment.

"Sheriff Galpin, you'll receive reports of our progress so you can personally inform the town. Our job is to resolve this as soon as possible, and we will. Just don't interfere with our work." Jonathan said, shifting his gaze to the Sheriff.

"That's not enough."

Jonathan frowned in annoyance, asking himself, Does Sheriff Galpin want to die?

"Dad…" Tyler wanted his father to stop arguing with that strange man.

Only then did Jonathan remember something, he smiled and said: "Then you'll be the only one supporting the investigation. I'll call you when I need you. I also need to ask you a few more questions later."

"I'll be waiting."

"Well then, have a good day." Jonathan walked toward the exit, following Wednesday and Larissa Weems, who said nothing.

"Out shopping?" Jonathan asked after walking a few steps.

"Yes."

"No." Wednesday said dryly. "I'm being forced to attend therapy sessions because I threw piranhas at a guy who was bothering my brother."

"That's extreme… I mean for you." Jonathan replied, glancing at Larissa Weems, who seemed to have something on her mind.

"Does your work bring you all the way here?"

"Yes, everything seems to be happening here…" Jonathan nodded, looked at the black van approaching, and asked: "Want a ride back?"

Without turning, Wednesday said: "Will you kill me too?"

"That's inappropriate, Miss Addams." Larissa Weems said, clearly upset.

"The blood on your clothes says you clearly killed someone recently, so?" Wednesday asked, now looking at Jonathan, waiting for an answer.

"I don't harm people." Jonathan said with a calm expression.

Wednesday wanted to say more, but she didn't.

To avoid hearing Larissa Weems' complaints and to learn more about Jonathan, she got into the van driven by Father Doug.

"Are you coming?" Jonathan asked this time, looking at the principal.

"I'll drive, very closely." Larissa Weems, unable to do anything else, turned to find her car and return to Nevermore Academy.

Jonathan, taking one last look at Tyler, climbed into the van, which seconds later was followed by the convoy that had come with him to the town.

Facing Jonathan, Wednesday asked: "Did I guess right with my question?"

"A werewolf, but it's not the one responsible for the victims." Jonathan had no problem sharing part of his work.

"Was it complicated?"

"No, it wasn't strong."

Curious, Wednesday asked another question: "As a hunter, do you feel a desire to kill the outcasts from Nevermore Academy?"

"I couldn't even if I wanted to. If that were the case, of course. As a hunter, I'm bound by The Healing Church. That's why I plan to use this academy…" Jonathan already knew about Wednesday's abilities and what she was capable of.

If she decided to join him, he would feel much more confident facing dark entities.

Just as Jonathan was about to continue speaking, he noticed what seemed to be a car accident.

"Another attack?"

"I don't think so, looks like a traffic accident." Jonathan said, turning his gaze to the vehicles that had collided.

"Hopefully no one is hurt." Father Doug said with a kind heart.

"One of the drivers died, broke his neck." But Wednesday had already had a vision of this accident and said it in a careless tone.

Jonathan looked at Wednesday and asked: "A vision?"

"You know about that?"

"A little. Your family is one with supernatural abilities… Not all of them, of course, but it seems you inherited one of the most powerful ones."

"Let's make a deal. Help me get out of this academy, and I'll help you kill as many supernatural beings as you want." Wednesday went straight to the point that interested her. Excited by the adventure Jonathan could find anywhere, she found it extremely interesting.

If Jonathan was as influential as everyone said, then she wouldn't be stopped.

"A tempting proposal." Jonathan, without accepting immediately, only looked at Wednesday thoughtfully.
