Chapter 39 - The Long Night, Part 2

A psychopath—in different sources of information it's stated that psychopathy is the result of a complex combination of genetic and environmental factors.

Sometimes they are intelligent. However, they have poor judgment that leads them to make bad decisions according to morality and the lifestyle of what is considered right.

They lack remorse and the ability to feel guilt. They are detached from society and from other people, being introverted. Of course, not in every case, but usually this is the way.

Impulsive, aggressive, and above all, unpredictable.

Jonathan had begun as a man fearful of everything around him. After all, how could he not be? The most terrifying beings, which once were harmless, could now be found everywhere.

But as he grew stronger and his genetics evolved, it became clear that something wrong was happening to him.

At first, he thought this was due to the growth of his powers, but later he considered something else he hadn't given importance to before.

"What if this was actually his true self?"

That is, he was simply merging with what he had always been.

Now, with his influence in The Healing Church, Jonathan wanted to investigate more about his past. He thought that if he could find out who he had been before living again, he might find a solution to these inconveniences.

All of this led him to one question: Who really killed Jonathan Belmont? If he was from an influential family, how could he die so easily?

Not only that—why was it ignored?

Jonathan already knew it had not been a normal death at all. That would not explain all the scars on his body.

And now that he had come back, in part it explained why things were changing the course of history.

That was why Jonathan indirectly asked Wednesday for help—to try his luck and see if, on this nocturnal outing, she could see something.

If he was lucky, Jonathan might finally put an end to his enemies.

This would also not reveal his intentions of using the academy as a growth point for his personal group.

"Zz… Curfew activated."

Jonathan turned off the radio and focused on driving to the outskirts of the town, where he parked the truck.

The deal was that if Wednesday didn't see anything, she would stay in the truck until Jonathan returned to the van.

Of course, could Wednesday miss out on the thrilling adventure of a hunter?

"Can you follow him?" Wednesday asked, staring at Enid, who uncertainly lifted her head.

"Yes, I can do it."

"Then follow him from a distance, we need to see what he does." Wednesday, unwilling to miss anything that might happen, quickly advanced, dragging Enid along.

But before they could get too far, Jonathan appeared in front of them holding three drinks.

"AHHH!" Enid screamed in terror.

"Looks like we've been caught." Wednesday, on the other hand, seemed very calm.

Jonathan handed them the drinks and, glancing slightly at Wednesday, said: "Did you sneak out of Nevermore?"

"Yes, that's what we did." Enid, to prevent Jonathan from knowing that she and Wednesday had climbed into his truck, affirmed the lie with fear.

Jonathan told them it wasn't his problem to take care of them, and to divert Enid's concern, he asked how their night was going as they walked through the lonely streets.

At that moment, a car began to follow them. On a silent street, the vehicle was obvious.

What's with that car? Enid thought, deeply disturbed by the recent attacks around Nevermore Academy.

Meanwhile, Wednesday suddenly had a vision of a strange man with glasses.

"Is he watching us?"

"Something like that. I thought walking at night would attract the man-eating monster." Jonathan said, gradually gaining Enid's trust.

But before Enid could respond, a voice was heard as the door of the car behind them opened.

"A werewolf talking to a Belmont? I thought that knowing this hunter has killed so many werewolves of your kind, you would stay away from him."

Wednesday looked at the tall man wearing sunglasses. Without stopping, the man placed himself behind Jonathan and stared at the two girls in front of him.

"Very fast…" Wednesday murmured, stepping back.

"Get back to the truck."

"Who are you…?" Enid whispered as she looked at the muscular, smiling man.

"Go back now!" Jonathan then looked at Wednesday and told her: "You can't get involved. This goes beyond any limit. We'll see each other tomorrow."

The man with glasses placed his hands on Jonathan's shoulders while laughing: "Are you sure there's still a tomorrow for you?"

Wednesday then remembered the vision of the man in sunglasses, who identified himself as Terry—the one who badly injured Jonathan.

"His name is Terry, he's here to kill you… Jonathan, be careful."

Jonathan frowned. She had a vision?

To an outsider, Terry might have looked at best like Jonathan's friend. But Wednesday knew this man was here to kill him.

"Can you get Enid out of here?" Jonathan asked Wednesday, who seemed to have control.

"Yes." As Wednesday walked away, Enid asked: "Will he be okay?"

"Yes, he can handle it."

"Really?" Terry laughed out loud again, his wide mouth stretching. His grip grew stronger as he pressed Jonathan's shoulder. However, Jonathan did not flinch.

"Don't get too close, or you could get hurt."

Seeing Jonathan's serious face, Wednesday pulled her hand away from Enid's grip and nodded: "You'd better not die—you owe me your promise."

Then she walked away, her eyes fixed on Terry. Nick followed her.

"Were those your last words for your pretty toy?" Terry asked as his grip trembled with the pressure he was exerting on Jonathan's shoulder.

"Toy?

"You're actually closer to the truth. I wish she was a toy, but even I'm not that cruel. We were just starting to work together." Jonathan didn't mention Wednesday's ability—he'd be a fool if he did.

"Hm… Just as expected from the famous hunter. Still not falling under the pressure I'm putting on you." Terry was about to unleash his full strength when Jonathan suddenly took a step forward, shifting the center of balance and reducing the pressure of the grip.

At the same time, he turned to force Terry to release him.

"Let's take this somewhere more private. We don't want a corpse on the public road, do we?"

Terry's surprised face turned into a smile. "That's right, you're absolutely right."
