Chapter 38 - Dismissed

Kairo placed down the elderly man and watched him dematerialise, causing him to look at Vladimir somewhat confused before running back into the building. He crossed paths with Maris and spoke, "Find anyone?" Kairo asked, but she just brushed him off, "Doesn't matter." She said quickly before running down a corridor.

Kairo got to a wall, and on the other side of it he could hear coughing and wheezing. He looked left and right: 2 doors. Both could lead to the same area, but a thought flashed in his mind, 'Lucan would go directly through this wall.' Kairo pulled his hand back and punched the wall, and it didn't even move; hell, his hand hurt more than the wall. Kairo then walked left into the room, seeing no way to the area behind that wall that he had to cross to the other room.

He looked about quickly, before spotting a massive walk-in closet… He tore the door off the hinges and pulled back some clothes to see a young boy, covering his face with his T-shirt.

Kairo slung him over his shoulder and started to run. As he did, he saw Maris running with a small girl cradled in her arms and Nyla nowhere to be seen… Kairo ducked out of the building and put the boy down, and Maris put the girl on her feet. They watched as both children dematerialised, and the timer started to speed up to 0:00. Nyla, inside the building, groaned; there was no one to fight or anything of the sort…

Nova, Arienne and Jalen ran out with Arienne carrying an old grandma; they all celebrated… then Dakota, Sabir, Lambert, "You know what I loved, honestly… none of you guys was chasing a great time… You guys were chasing the mission objective, well, mostly." Vladimir walked away and gestured for the class to follow, and they entered the classroom; he broke each group down individually before dismissing them. "Kairo, you moved quickly, and most thought civilian first. Maris, you identified the building was unstable and didn't gloss over the small details. Arienne, you thought about the possibilities of hostiles."

"However, all of you received an F." The consensus was confusion amongst the three: "But we saved lives?" Vladimir thought about this, then nodded. "Yes, but I said earlier, 'teamwork keeps you alive.' Kairo, you communicated once to your team and never again; Maris, you identified the building was unstable yet didn't share this. Nyla spent her time looking for a fight." They seemed down, but then Nyla spoke up, "What if there was an enemy?" Vladimir nodded at this question. "Yes, and if there was an enemy then you'd fight him; however, it would have to be readily apparent." Then he addressed the whole team, "None of you worked as a team or used your abilities, except for Kairo. But the main goal is teamwork. Dismissed."

Everyone started to get up and leave. "Kairo, stay." Kairo was confused; he hadn't done anything that warranted Vladimir calling him back. "Who are you?" Vladimir asked, and Kairo didn't follow. "I am Kairo Veylan." Vladimir shook his head. "No, that's your name. Who are you?" Kairo didn't exactly know what to say, and Vladimir continued, "Do you think you're Lucan?" This immediately annoyed Kairo. "What, you think that brutish style gets you far? You tried to punch through a wall instead of taking the extra 10 seconds to check the other rooms. What if you break through the wall and the civilian gets trapped or killed by the wall that falls on them?" Kairo reluctantly started to understand. "You aren't Lucan's replacement; you weren't brought in to be him. We recruited you to be you."
