The next day, early morning.

When Kayla Danvers, wearing a pair of old-fashioned black-rimmed glasses and holding a school bag, stepped through the school gates with her head down, the entire world of sound opened up to her.

She heard everything. The thunderous stomping of feet and the rhythmic thud of balls on the school's sports fields. The slight rustle of a hibernating insect in the small woods behind the school building. The loud discussions and whispered secrets of the students nearby. The sleepy yawn of the security guard at the far end of the school.

Even if she didn't try to listen, a flood of auditory information poured into her ears, clear and unimpeded.

Kayla frowned, a flicker of discomfort on her face. It had been over three months since her super-hearing had awakened. She had learned to manage it, to not let it show. She walked into the school building as she always did, a ghost in the halls.

The other students, whose secrets she could now hear, barely glanced at her before looking away. To them, she was just Kayla: a plain, withdrawn, and gloomy girl, a nearly invisible presence in the school.

Kayla let out a secret sigh of relief. She preferred it this way. She made her way to her seat in the back corner of the classroom, her steps light and quick. She gently pulled out her sturdy chair, as if afraid she might accidentally break it, and only relaxed when she was fully seated.

It was a cautious ritual she performed every day.

You did it, Kayla. No accidents this time. Nothing broken.

She gave herself a small, secret smile. It was a bright, sweet smile, a beauty that even her thick glasses couldn't completely hide. It was a pity no one was there to see it.

Kayla was a Kryptonian, hidden among ordinary humans. Her real name was Kara Zor-El. She was not the only surviving Kryptonian in the universe. The other was the world-famous superhero, Superman, who was also her cousin, Kal-El.

The reason she was still a fifteen-year-old girl, younger than her cousin, was a story that began with the destruction of their home world. When Krypton was dying, Kara's parents sent her to Earth to protect her infant cousin. But during her journey through space, her ship was knocked into a wormhole. She lost more than a decade in an instant. By the time she arrived on Earth, just six months ago, her cousin had already grown up to become Superman. He no longer needed her protection. Instead, he helped her find a foster family, the Danvers, so she could live a normal life.

Kayla glanced at the clock on the wall. Five minutes until class. She took out her textbooks, the constant chatter of the school still buzzing in her ears. But today, the usual gossip about couples and superheroes was different. Almost everyone was talking about the morning news.

A giant, yellow-green monster had appeared on the outskirts of the city last night. The Marines had been sent to stop it, but they had suffered heavy casualties. Blurry, shaky footage had shown the monster tearing through the city and the Marine forces with terrifying power.

Then, the Spider-woman, a silver-haired goddess, and a golden-armored knight had appeared. A short clip of the battle between the silver-haired goddess and the monster had been broadcast, a clash between a divine shield and a monstrous fist that had caused a worldwide sensation.

The most talked-about topic, of course, was the silver-haired goddess who had ultimately defeated and beheaded the monster.

"I'm calling it now. The silver-haired goddess is my new favorite hero!"

"Bullshit! You said your favorite was Superman!"

"Who says you can't have two favorites?"

"As a Batman fan, I have to say, the silver-haired goddess is cool as hell."

In just one morning, the silver-haired goddess had become the most popular hero in the city. Even the male teachers at the school were buzzing about it.

"Does this mean the silver-haired goddess is our local hero?" one of them had said excitedly in the office.

"It's hard to say," another had replied rationally. "For people with powers like that, distance doesn't mean the same thing as it does to us."

They all agreed. It was like Superman and Iron Man. Everyone knew they lived in Metropolis and New York, but no one was surprised when they showed up on the other side of the world.

"I don't care. She's the goddess of my dreams from now on. I'm buying all her merchandise!" the first teacher had declared.

If he only knew the true identity of his "goddess," Kayla wondered what he would think.

"Silver-haired goddess, Spider-woman, giant monster," she muttered to herself, completely uninterested. Her existence as a Kryptonian was the greatest secret in the city. These other super-powered beings didn't seem that special to her. She was only interested in the ordinary things of the human world.

"Class is about to start," she thought, a little surprised. She had been filtering through all the voices in the school, but she hadn't heard the one she wanted to hear most. He hadn't passed by her classroom as he usually did.

Ding!

The school bell rang.

Kayla looked toward the upper floor of the school building. To her, the walls were transparent. She could see into another classroom, a classroom full of students, but with two very conspicuous empty seats.

The male teacher who had been talking about buying hero merchandise walked to the podium. "Good morning, class," he said. "Leo Prince and Nami asked for the day off today. They're not feeling well."

Not feeling well? But he was fine yesterday.

Kayla frowned. What concerned her even more were the whispers she could now hear from the students in that classroom.

"What a coincidence. They both asked for leave on the same day."

"I knew it. They're definitely a couple."

"So, I have no chance?"

"You never had a chance. Oh, my goddess Nami…"

Hearing the heartbroken cries of the other students, Kayla felt an involuntary pang in her own heart.
