Chapter 5 - chapter 5 _ I got the job

"Mick?."

"What are you doing?" she asked.

"Selena, I have something to discuss with you," he said.

"Mick, I don't want to talk to you, so leave me alone."

She tried to push him away but couldn't.

"Selena, will you just listen to me?"

She shook her head. "There is nothing to talk about."

Mick's jaw tightened as she stubbornly refused to listen to him.

"You don't want to know why I left back then? You think it was easy for me?" he asked. "I made a mistake, Selena. I shouldn't have left, but I had my reasons."

"And you didn't tell me," she said.

"I regretted not telling you, and I've been thinking about you every single day."

"Stop," she cut him off, her eyes hardening. "You don't have to say this now. It's too late. You made your choice, and I've moved on."

Mick scoffed bitterly.

"Moved on with who?" he asked.

"That's none of your business," she told him.

Mick sighed.

"I know you're angry, and you have every right to be. But please, just let me explain myself properly."

"What makes you think I still bother being angry? I just want you to stay away from me. So, what do you want to say?"

"Um… Selena, why don't we talk somewhere else? I promise I won't waste your time."

Selena thought for a moment before agreeing.

"Fine."

Mick was so happy.

"Okay. I'll see you at Park Street Diner tomorrow at six."

"So, can I leave now?"

"Yes… yes, you can."

Selena left and got into a cab.

Mick stood there watching her.

"I'll make you fall in love with me again," he whispered, a determined smile appearing on his face. "This time, I won't let you slip away."

When Selena got home, she didn't want her mood to be affected because of Mick, so she decided to tell Mia the good news.

"Hello, Mia."

"Guess what?" Selena asked.

"Selena, you know I don't like guessing. Just tell me," she said hurriedly.

"I got the job!"

"Wait, seriously? Congratulations, Selena! That's amazing!"

"Thank you. I'm so happy!" Selena said excitedly.

"Of course you should be. You worked for it."

Selena suddenly remembered something.

"Mia, I have something to tell you."

"What?" Mia asked.

Selena told her everything about Lucian.

"Girl, are you kidding me?" Mia exclaimed. "But why didn't you want to try?"

"Are you crazy? I'm supposed to get married when I'm just starting my life? No, I can't."

"But he has money, so you won't lack anything.

And who told you that you can't accomplish your goals while being married? He also wants to help you look for your real mom. I think he's really serious."

Selena sighed.

"But you know what happened with Mick. What makes you think this one is different?"

"Let's not talk about Mick, Selena. He's a loser. Just try this one.

If you don't like him, don't go through with the marriage.

And very soon, your mom is going to start telling you to get married anyway."

"All right. I'll think about it," Selena replied.

"And when you've fixed the day you're coming, let me know so I can come pick you up at the airport."

"Okay."

The call ended.

Selena went to prepare something to eat. She was just about to sit down and eat when her phone rang.

This time, it was Lucian.

"Why is he calling me?" she asked herself.

"Hello," she said nervously.

"Would you like to hang out later?" he asked.

"Um… sure. I'm not doing anything anyway."

"All right. I'll come and pick you up at five."

Lucian smiled.

Selena quickly finished her food and went to look for something to wear. She searched through her wardrobe but couldn't find anything suitable.

"Ahhh!" she screamed in frustration.

Then she noticed a box. She opened it and found a gown inside.

It was a birthday present from Mia that she hadn't had the chance to open.

"Mia, I love you so much," she said as she kissed the gown.

The gown was a little short, but she couldn't complain because it was the only suitable thing she had.

She quickly tidied up the house before taking her bath. Then she got dressed.

At six, Lucian was already waiting. When he saw Selena, he was mesmerized by her beauty again.

This time, she wasn't wearing any makeup, yet she still looked beautiful.

Selena noticed his gaze and quickly looked away. She wasn't used to wearing short clothes, but she had no other choice this time.

They both got into the car, and Lucian drove her to the children's park.

When they arrived, they got out of the car and sat on one of the benches. Neither of them said anything for a moment.

"So, have you thought about it?" Lucian finally asked.

Selena took a deep breath.

"I don't know. I just don't want to make a mistake by jumping into marriage."

After saying that, she lowered her head.

"I understand," Lucian said. "And if I may ask, have you ever been in a relationship?"

Selena raised her head and looked at him before turning her attention toward the children playing nearby.

"Yes."

Lucian was surprised. He hadn't expected that, especially because she seemed so hesitant about relationships.

"How long did you date?"

"One year," she answered.

"Why did you two break up?"

"He was so obsessed with studying abroad, but he never told me why.

We both said we were going to attend university in the country, but he ended up leaving without even calling or texting me.

But it's fine now."

She smiled at him.

Lucian simply listened and said nothing.

"Come. Let me take you somewhere."

Selena looked at him curiously. She didn't know what he was planning.

"Where are we going?" she asked.

"When we get there, you'll see."

He drove to an ice cream shop. When they arrived, Selena smiled as soon as she saw the place.

Lucian bought two ice creams and handed it to her.

Selena looked at him in confusion. "Where's yours?"

"Don't worry. I'm fine," he said.

Selena took a bite. Her eyes lit up when she tasted it.

"It's so sweet. You should try it."

She held the ice cream toward him with a small, innocent smile, waiting for him to take a bite.

Lucian looked at her for a moment before lowering his head and taking a small bite.

Selena froze when she realized she had offered him the same ice cream she had already eaten from.

Her cheeks turned red, and she quickly pulled it back.
