EVELYN'S POV.
"Eve,dinner is ready!!" I heard mom exclaim as I saw her through the opened door heading to the dinning area.
Giving Evie her last petting stroke,I stood up from the grass and making sure all the dirt on my dress were gone,I ran into the house, ready to help mom with the dishing of the food. Evie followed suit behind me barking happily as food was finally ready.
Entering the house, the sweet aroma of roasted meat and corn slapped me right in the face making my already hungry stomach growl in anticipation.
"Someone is hungry."Mom said and I nodded in affirmation.
"Yes I am."
"Well then,go get yourself ready."She raised her head to where I sat, signaling me to go and sit there. Feeling overjoyed,I rushed like my life depended on it and abruptly sat on my chair. The sound from my harsh action earlier, quickly grapped everyone's attention.
"Christ Eve,you scared me."Mom said a little angered.
"Sorry,I didn't mean to."I apologized with my head down.I feigned it.I had to show remorse or I was going to receive an endless lecture of her bickers of manners and a whole list of table etiquettes.
The aroma in the air caught my attention again and throwing everything into the air,I decided to dig in. It was about time I devoured this meal whole and fast.
No sooner did I take the chicken thigh from my plate than mom hit my hand. The impact was so strong and unexpected to the extent that, I involuntarily dropped the roasted chicken.
"Ouch mom, what was that for?"I moaned in pain, giving her an offended and questioning look.
"How many times do you want me to remind you to always wash your hands any time you finish petting Evie? Do you really want to contract diseases?" She looked at me with that expression that said;if you don't quickly do what is expected of you,you would face the music.
Swallowing the invisible lump in my throat,I quickly got up from my chair and headed straight to the kitchen to do what was expected of me. Within a few seconds,I was done and closing the tap,I exited the kitchen now ready to eat. I had wasted enough time already. There was no stopping this time. Chicken, here I come.
"Did you dry them?"Mom asked even before I could sit down. I stood there really frustrated as my wet hands dripped with water and wetted the carpet.
"Evelyn Miles, would you go back to the kitchen and dry those wet hands of yours!?"She cried out rhetorically in an aggrieved tone.
No one told me to sprint back to the kitchen to dry my hands before I received some harsh scoldings.
"You've been getting on my nerves today Eve."She warned as I walked by her to take my seat opposite her.Lady it's not my fault that I'm so famished.
By now,I had lost half my appetite but I was still going to eat.
"We are going to wait for your father. He would be arriving soon."All hell broke loose when I heard such an unexpected and disappointing declaration.
"What!but..but.."
"No buts dear, you know we always eat when the whole family is present and today is not an exception. "She explained and I couldn't help but clench my fork hard under the table. I clenched them so hard I could feel my knuckles had become white. It seemed both Heaven and Earth were against me and I didn't know what sin I had committed to receive such punishment.
Accepting such cruelty,I rested back on my chair as I waited patiently for the man of the house to arrive.
Seconds felt like hours and my stomach rumbled for the infinity time. My mom looked at me for the hundredth time but still didn't allow me to eat. Was she really going to wait for father before we started to eat? This woman was now getting on my nerves.
The sound of a carriage lit up my world as I knew who had finally arrived. Getting off my chair,I hurriedly went to the door to receive confirmation that my father had returned home. I beamed in smiles when I saw such gentleman alight the carriage.
I rushed to him and entered his opened comforting arms.
"That's my baby girl. How are you?"His soothing voice made my hunger disappear for a split second.
"I'm doing fine now that you are here. Mommy doesn't want us to eat unless you come home. And we've been waiting for a while now."I said finally throwing the tantrum I had planned to give.
"Oh forgive daddy for being so late.I will make it up to you later. You must be hungry then. Come now, before the food gets cold."
Well trust me, it's as cold as the iceberg thanks to the woman you call your wife.
The two of us entered and the lady of the house greeted us with a smile. Well not me per se but her husband.
"Welcome love, how was work?"she asked my father with love in her eyes.
"It was okay and I'm a little tired but seeing you now,I think I've been rejuvenated."My dad said as he walked towards my mom.I felt a little hurt knowing my dad had just abandoned me for his wife but I knew better than anyone that my jealousy wasn't relevant. My father was always going to belong to my mother and that was one thing my mother made really clear to me.
Mom's cheeks were red like a tomato when my father kissed her.
"I missed you."He said looking at her with so much love. I really envied the love my parents had for each other. I always felt I was reading a fairytale book when I witnessed their love. It made me always pray that I would find someone who would love me like the way my father loves my mom. My stomach growled again for the God knows how time and I cleared my throat to gain their attention.
"Let's not forget that someone is hungry."I said and my dad laughed.
"Yeah yeah I hear you. Come now before you swallow me instead."Mom said as she made her way to the dinning table. My dad sitting at the head of the table,my mom sitting on his right and me on his left,we shared the grace and at long last, started to eat. Even though the chicken was now warm,I still ate it whole as it still carried its usual spectacular taste. I ate and ate till there was no room for dessert. "Guess you were really hungry weren't you?"Mom asked innocently which I knew was feigned. What the...
I wanted to protest that I had told her I was hungry countless times and she didn't want to mind me but I knew better than anyone that I had to stay quiet.
There was no winning an argument against my mom plus, I was too full to even speak.
Just nodding my head,I tried hard to get up and cleared the table as everyone including Evie was done.
"Dinner was really delicious."My dad complimented my mom's cooking skills as he always did after every meal.
"Thank you dear."Mom said as she kissed my dad on the lips this time. I subconsciously smiled looking at my loving parents. This was the environment at which I had grown in and I was so happy I did. I had a loving, caring smart, cunning, talented and beautiful mother who I looked up to and a handsome, hardworking, understanding and loving father who I adored. I couldn't ask for more.
