Chapter 9 - The Hallway

Xaviers grip was like iron as he pulled me out of the great dining hall, the music and laughter fading behind us. His silence was louder than any growl.

"Xavier -"

"Ouiet."

We turned down the corridor of the hall, his steps slowing down as he pinned me roughly against the wall. His body a wall of heat and muscle, blocking my path.

"What the hell were you doing, just sitting there and letting her talk to you like that". His voice was low and demanding.

My eyes widened. "W-What? She was humiliating me infront of everyone -"

"And you just took it." He slammed his fist on the wall near my head. "You think you can show weakness here and survive".

I snapped. "I'm not weak, I just -"

"You just what" He leaned down to my eye level, his hot breath on my face sending chills through me. " You think just because Maya likes you, everyone here will too? You think you're safe just because I haven't threw you out yet".

I snapped back. "I didn't ask to be here"

His gaze burned into me, a storm of anger and something.... darker. "You're here because I allow it, because my wolf refuses to let you go".

I froze.

He tilted my head up to meet his gaze, "Seraphine thinks you don't belong here, so she wants to break you, to make you leave on your own and right now....". His thumb brushes my cheek. "You're making it easier for her.

I swallowed hard. "Understand this Merida" He was was low and possessive. " You are mine, my pack, my rules, my territory, if anyone touches you they answer to me, anyone insults you...." He purrs slighltly. "They'll regret it..."

I heard a faint click in the hall, Seraphine stood at the far end, her eyes narrowed, jealousy burning in her eyes. Xavier's eyes didn't leave mine as he growled. "Go back to the feast".

She purrs. "I was just passing by" Xavier turn his head the movement sharp. "Now." She walked away without another word. But I could feel her glare on me as she disappeared around the corner.

Xavier turned his attention back to me, his hand still on my jaw, his voice a warning and a promise all at once. "Don't give her a reason for her to think she's wining"

And then he stepped back, releasing me, "Stay close to me for the rest of the night" I didn't know whether it was protection or possession.

But I followed him back to the feast. The noise of the grand dining hall grew louder with each step, until it was shattered by a deafening howl from outside,

It was not a howl of celebration.

But a warning.

Xavier tensed, his body going rigid, his wolf surging to the surface in his eyes. "Stay here". He ordered, already moving towards the doors. Maya appeared from the crowd, face pale. "Merida, don't go out..."

Before I could ask why, the heavy doors to the hall burst opened, a bloodied warrior stumbled inside.

"They've breached the borders! He gasped. "The rogues.... they are here again..."
