Chapter 11 - Fractures of doubts
Days passed by, and the air between us was never the same. Xavier was more watchful and distant. I would sometimes catch him staring at me, but not with the same heat that made my heart raced.
Every conversation was shorter, every glance at me filled with doubt. And I hated every minute of it, I hated how my heart clenched everytime he looked at me like that.
I hated how I wanted him to look at me with something deeper, how I wanted him to notice me. I didn't just wanted to prove myself innocent, I wanted him to feel something for me.
One night, we crossed paths, in the training grounds, moonlight slid over his bare forearms as he sparred with 2 warriors, the raw dominance and power displayed made my heart flutter.
When our eyes locked, It felt like it was only us under the moonlight, the second the warriors left, he broke the connection, tossing a cloth over his shoulder. "You should be resting".
His voice was flat and distant.
"I've rested enough" I said, stepping closer. "You've been avoiding me...."
His jaw clenched. "I've been protecting my pack". I snapped. "And what about me? Are you done protecting me?"
He turned around, stepping closer and tilting my head, His scent wrapped around me. "Don't push me Merida" That heat behind his eyes was back, more intense.
My heart fluttered. "Or what?
His hand wrapped around my throat. "Do you want a death wish?". His voice low with an unspoken.
"Can you do that?" I slapped back.
His grip tightened as he leaned down even futher, our lips inches apart, whispering darkly. "Try me".
I leaned into his touch, my hand moving to his arm around my neck. "I don't want you to avoid me anymore... I want you to notice me, make me yours".
He suppressed a growl. "You're so fucking infuriating" He snapped, leaning even closer, as our lips brushed slightly together.
I parted my lip, his eyes flickered to look at it, as his breath ghosted on my lips as he pulled in almost kissing me, but then Seraphine's voice rang out from the shadows.
"Alpha! The elders need you, it's urgent, It's about her"
My stomach dropped.
His gaze lingered on me for a moment before turning away and walking towards Seraphine.
I was left standing there, my pulse racing. The cold night suddenly felt sharper against my skin.
