In less than ten minutes, an entire well-armed Marine unit had been annihilated by the Abomination. The air was filled with the screams of the dying and the roar of flames. A once-prosperous corner of the city had been transformed into a living hell.
The Abomination stood like a demon crawled from the depths of the abyss, born for nothing but slaughter. Thick, dark blood oozed from under its feet, pooling around the crushed vehicle it stood upon. It looked down at its clenched fists, feeling the immense, godlike power coursing through its veins, and a crazed, satisfied grin spread across its monstrous face.
"Don't… don't kill me…"
The crisp clatter of a rifle hitting the ground was the only sound in the sudden silence. The sole surviving Marine, standing amidst the rubble, stared in horror at the fragmented remains of his comrades. His spirit, his will to fight, shattered in that instant. His legs gave out, and he collapsed to his knees in the blood-soaked street.
In that moment, everything he had ever believed in died. This overwhelming display of power, a force that defied all logic and reason, made him wonder if there was a God in this world at all. And if there was, could even He stop the unstoppable monster before him?
The Abomination grinned at the soldier, having no intention of leaving any survivors. It took a step, a step that signaled the coming of death, and the very earth seemed to tremble and wail beneath its feet.
The Marine knelt motionless, his hands weakly supporting him, waiting for the end.
Just as the Abomination was deciding whether to crush the soldier with its hands or stomp him into paste with its feet, a graceful figure swung through the night sky, silhouetted against the flames.
Thwip! Thwip! Thwip!
Three white webs splattered against the Abomination's bald head. The monster reached up, grabbing at the sticky substance on the back of its head. With a look of disgust, it turned to see a human girl in a black-and-white spider-suit perched atop a nearby, partially destroyed clock tower.
"Hey, big guy. Wanna play?" the Spider-girl, Nami, taunted, beckoning with a provocative finger. Then, without waiting for a reply, she shot another web and swung away.
"ROAR!"
The Abomination roared at the sky, momentarily forgetting the soldier. It slammed its feet into the ground, cracking the highway beneath it, and launched itself like a missile toward the clock tower. It landed with enough force to shatter the rest of the structure, then immediately leaped again, chasing after the soaring Spider-girl.
The Marine stared in a daze until a young boy's voice spoke from nearby. "Hey, mister. Shouldn't you take this chance to get out of here?"
The soldier looked toward the voice, but saw only the fiery ruins. Who was that?
The voice, however, snapped him out of his trance. He struggled to his feet and stumbled away from the battlefield, a place that would be seared into his memory forever.
In a nearby building, its residents long since evacuated, a silver-haired boy with a round shield and a longsword stood behind a window. It was Leo.
He sighed. He didn't even understand why he had come back. After weighing the pros and cons, after deciding to leave, he had still followed the Spider-girl back into the warzone. He couldn't shake the feeling of unease, leaving her to face that monster alone.
She's just a stranger, he told himself. A stranger with powers.
"Well, I'm here now," he muttered. "Might as well see how this plays out."
Leo gripped his sword, leaped from the window, and landed silently on the roof of a church thirty meters away. He crouched down, hiding himself from view, and watched the chase unfold.
Nami seemed to know she couldn't fight the Abomination head-on. She was using her webs to swing through the deserted streets, her agile body weaving between the tall buildings, slipping through alleys and windows barely wide enough for her to pass.
But even so, the Abomination was relentless. It stayed right on her tail, the distance between them slowly but surely closing. It didn't bother with alleys or windows; it simply smashed through anything in its path, reducing buildings to dust with its raw, brute force.
BOOM!
The Abomination landed like a meteor, this time just ahead of Nami, tearing a hole in the side of a building. It clung to the wall, its massive hand swiping at her as she swung past. At the last second, Nami pulled on her web, contorting her body to narrowly avoid its grasp. The monster's massive green fingers tore off her hood, ripping it to shreds.
"ROAR!" Enraged, the Abomination continued its pursuit.
"She's more skilled than I thought," Leo observed from his high vantage point, a sense of shock mixing with his concern. But he knew that even if she kept running, it was only a matter of time.
"No, wait," he thought, his eyes narrowing. "She's not just running away." He realized she was deliberately luring the Abomination into the most densely packed part of the city.
Crack! Crack!
The walls of a narrow alley crumbled as the Abomination charged through, widening the passage by sheer force. It saw the Spider-girl disappear into another long, narrow alley ahead, and the veins on its forehead bulged with rage. With a thunderous roar, it plunged into the alley, smashing its way through.
But this time, when it burst out the other side, it ran straight into a trap. The entire area was covered in a thick, intricate network of white webs, anchored to the surrounding buildings. Hundreds of sticky strands formed a massive spiderweb, completely blocking the alley's exit.
An un-enraged Abomination might have seen it, but in its blind fury, it charged headlong into the trap.
"Now!"
Just as Leo had predicted, Nami, who was clinging to a high wall, shot web after web from her wrists. The sticky strands latched onto the Abomination's head and limbs, pinning it to the surrounding buildings like iron cables.
In five seconds, the Abomination was almost completely cocooned in webs, its face and mouth sealed shut, completely immobilized.
"Amazing," Leo breathed, a genuine sense of admiration in his voice. "I really underestimated her."
Having exhausted her web fluid, Nami sat down on the high wall, panting. Perhaps thinking she was alone, she pulled up the bottom of her torn hood, revealing a delicate, beautiful chin, a small mouth gasping for air, and a tall, elegant nose.
"No way," Leo whispered, his heart skipping a beat.
Even with only half of her face visible, he recognized her. The Spider-girl was someone he knew.
