"Do monsters feel pain, too?"

Leo, clad in the golden armor, asked the question with a deadpan expression. He stood on the Abomination's outstretched arm and pushed the vintage longsword in his hand deeper, driving the blade further into the monster's eye socket.

"GRAAAAAH!"

With its right eye pierced, the Abomination let out a deranged scream, finally releasing Nami, who it was holding in both hands.

Seeing that Nami was about to fall to the ruined ground, Leo ripped his sword out in a flash of silver, sending a spray of foul-smelling green blood into the air. He caught Nami with his free arm, hugging her waist, and fled into the smoke-filled city at top speed.

Dozens of meters away, the Abomination, clutching its bleeding eye socket, threw its head back and roared, a sound like an erupting volcano. The terrifying shriek formed a visible soundwave, causing the very air in a hundred-meter radius to vibrate. The surrounding fires flickered and recoiled from the sheer force of the sound. Countless windows shattered, and the alarms of abandoned cars blared in unison.

The wounded Abomination was truly angry now.

Leo, carrying Nami, hadn't even made it a hundred meters before he sensed something hurtling toward them. He glanced back and saw a military four-wheel-drive vehicle flying through the night sky.

And it wasn't alone.

Taxis, vans, and even a massive, double-decker bus followed, all thrown by the enraged Abomination. Four or five vehicles rained down from the sky like meteorites, each one carrying a devastating impact.

Leo held Nami tightly, his feet moving at an extreme speed as he leaped and dodged, narrowly avoiding one car after another. The vehicles that missed crashed into the ground, erupting into fiery explosions of sparks and rubble.

He swerved to avoid a third van that tumbled toward him, but the space to maneuver was shrinking. Before he could catch his breath, the bus and the remaining car were upon him. The massive shadow of the bus fell over them. This time, there was no escape.

But in that moment, Leo, his mind dominated by a divine calm, stopped dead in his tracks. His feet dug two deep furrows into the asphalt. He turned to face the oncoming bus, took a deep breath, and swung the vintage sword in his right hand with all his might.

SHIIIING!

Air, smoke, dust, fire… everything in a three-meter arc in front of him was sliced in two.

The bus was cut cleanly down the middle, the metal edges of the cut as smooth as a mirror. The two halves of the bus continued past him, tumbling end over end before crashing to the ground in a heap of flaming scrap metal.

"Hah," Leo exhaled, the hand holding the sword trembling slightly. He let out a hot, ragged breath. Without warning, the giant, yellow-green figure of the Abomination landed behind him, the ground sinking under the immense pressure of its weight.

Leo's silver eyes narrowed. He realized instantly that throwing the cars had just been a distraction.

He had still underestimated the Abomination.

With its eye injured and its rage fueling it, the monster had abandoned its reckless approach and used a surprisingly clever tactic. Its face was a twisted mask of fury. The moment it landed, it threw a devastating punch at Leo's back. The air cracked under the pressure.

The retro longsword in his hand was knocked from his grasp and sent flying, sticking into the ground. Leo, together with Nami whom he was holding, was sent flying by the force of the blow. He soared through the air for twenty or thirty meters before crashing through the outer wall of a building.

"Cough, cough," Leo coughed, climbing to his feet. He had instinctively held Nami tight to his chest, taking the full brunt of the impact with his own body. He felt the blood churning in his veins, but for a punch that could level a building, he was surprisingly uninjured.

An idea struck him. He reached behind him and took off the round shield he'd been carrying on his back. Subtle ripples of energy flowed across the dark gold surface of the shield before fading. There wasn't a single scratch on it.

"It was the shield," Leo realized, his eyes shining. He'd almost forgotten about it. The golden rope, the sword… they all possessed extraordinary powers. It only made sense that the shield was special, too. The fact that it had just absorbed a punch from the Abomination was all the proof he needed. And the boots and bracelets he wore… they might have hidden abilities as well.

"Am I wearing a full set of legendary gear?" Leo muttered, a dazed look on his face. He finally understood. It was no longer a matter of running away. To defeat this monster, he, a fake goddess, must learn to use the divine weapons he was equipped with.

"Don't… don't come near me!"

A man in a military uniform was cowering in a dark corner of the second-floor lobby where Leo had crashed. He was staring at Leo and the unconscious Nami in terror.

"It's you," Leo said, recognizing the Marine the Abomination had almost killed. He must have hidden in the building, unable to escape.

Leo didn't waste any time. He gently laid Nami down on a nearby sofa and said to the Marine, "Protect her."

The Marine nodded frantically. He watched as Leo, holding the dark gold shield, turned and leaped out of the second-story window.

The Marine stumbled to the window and looked out. As his gaze fell upon Leo, now standing defiantly before the Abomination, his mouth fell open in utter shock. His entire perception of reality was continuing to collapse and reassemble itself. After a moment of silence, he raised his Transponder Snail to his mouth again, his voice trembling.

"Report to HQ, this is ground zero. Our unit has been wiped out. I repeat, wiped out. There's… there's someone fighting the Abomination now. A mysterious individual is fighting the Abomination!" He paused, listening to the static. "Please respond if you can hear me!"

Out on the burning streets, the Abomination stared at Leo, confused. Its invincible power, a punch thrown with all its strength, hadn't killed its opponent. It hadn't even seriously injured him.

What was even more incomprehensible was that this time, Leo was taking the initiative.

This was the ultimate humiliation.

The Abomination's enraged roar echoed through the city once more. It was a primal, savage beast, and it charged at Leo with everything it had. It no longer bothered with clever tactics; those were for the weak. Its invincible body was the only weapon it needed. That was its unwavering belief.

Leo charged forward as well, his silver eyes cold and merciless, like an ancient god reborn. As the two titans were about to collide, he made only one move.

A shield bash.
