Lying spread-eagled on the ruined tiles of the collapsed building, the Abomination couldn't accept what had happened. Its body, which could rival or even surpass the Hulk's, had been knocked to the ground. This should have been impossible.
"Roar!"
It roared in anger, but even the sound was weak. It wanted to tear that person to pieces, to crush every bone and shred of flesh into pulp, to wash away the humiliation of being wounded and crippled with his blood. The Abomination was consumed by these hateful thoughts, but before it could get up, a glimmer of light suddenly appeared in the green, blood-soaked field of its vision.
WHOOSH!
The tip of a sword pierced through the dust, breaking the sound barrier. The point of the blade arrived first, the sonic boom of its passage echoing a split second later. The Abomination reacted quickly, trying to grab the blade, but the tip still reached its throat. The sharp, ancient sword broke through its tough skin and sank deep into the muscle, drawing blood.
It all happened too fast. Only then did the Abomination see the silver-haired boy sprinting toward him.
"Did you think you were still the only hunter on this field?"
Leo's silver hair streamed wildly behind him, his eyes completely devoid of emotion as he looked at the Abomination. The moment he had chosen to fight with his shield, the roles of hunter and prey had been reversed. And when he had blasted the Abomination away and retrieved his longsword, he had seized the initiative.
Now, he was pressing his advantage, turning a brief upper hand into a decisive victory.
"I've never killed a person," Leo said, his voice flat. "But I don't think you count as a person." He concentrated all the remaining divine energy in his body, all his remaining strength, and pushed the sword forward with every ounce of his being.
Sizzle.
Corrosive green blood oozed from the Abomination's throat and from the hand that was still trying to clutch the blade. The ancient longsword plunged deeper and deeper, like a giant nail being driven into its neck.
Driven into a corner it had never expected, the Abomination's one remaining eye widened in disbelief. The shock on its face slowly faded, replaced by a crazed, desperate grin.
A sense of foreboding washed over Leo, but he knew he couldn't stop now. If he lost this chance, if he let the Abomination recover, he wouldn't just lose the opportunity to kill it—he wouldn't even be able to escape. He, too, had pushed himself into a corner.
The Abomination suddenly released its grip on the sword, allowing it to sink even deeper into its throat. The move caught Leo completely by surprise. Then, the monster's hands shot forward, its ten fingers wrapping around Leo's body and head, and squeezed.
Instantly, Leo felt as if he were being crushed between two mountains, the air driven from his lungs.
So that's your plan, he thought, understanding the Abomination's intent. At the moment of life and death, it had abandoned all defense and chosen to go on the attack.
Crack!
The sound of his own bones groaning under the pressure filled his ears. Every inch of his body was being compressed beyond its limits. He couldn't see the Abomination's condition, but he knew that even with its throat pierced, it wasn't dead.
If this continues, I'll be the one who dies first.
He knew it for a fact. But he also knew that the Abomination was trying to force him to stop. It had to be at its limit, too. Otherwise, with its immense strength, he wouldn't have lasted ten seconds. More than ten seconds had passed, which meant its strength was fading. If he gave up now, he would lose.
Leo clenched his teeth and pushed the longsword to its hilt, then tried to wrench it to the side. But the blade was stuck between muscle and bone. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn't move it an inch.
In the dark, ruined building, the two were locked in a final, deadly embrace. One with a sword in its throat, the other being crushed to death. The battle was about to end, but until the last second, there was no way to know who would win, who would lose, or if both would die.
My body… I can't hold on any longer.
Leo was on the verge of collapse, still unable to move the sword.
Is this it? Is this the end?
He was filled with a sense of unwillingness. He poured the last of his strength into the sword.
SQUELCH!
The sword suddenly ripped sideways. Leo was stunned. The hands crushing him lost their strength, and the Abomination's massive body fell to the ground with a thud. He looked up and saw that the monster's head was nearly severed from its body. Its throat was just a mess of torn flesh and blood, and its one remaining eye was filled with the same unwillingness he had felt just moments before.
"I won?"
For a moment, Leo couldn't believe it. He forgot that he, too, was collapsing, his legs giving out from under him. But he didn't hit the ruined ground. Instead, he fell into a familiar embrace.
"What do you think?" a clear, sweet voice said in his ear. Leo's eyes widened. It was the person he had wanted to see most in his moment of life and death.
"Auntie," he breathed, not even realizing he had said it out loud.
"Look at the mess you've made of yourself," Diana said, her tone laced with blame.
"I'm sorry," Leo, who just moments ago had been betting his life against a monster, now said meekly, his ears drooping like a scolded puppy's.
Diana couldn't help but feel a mixture of anger and amusement. But mostly, she was relieved. She had made it in time.
"We'll talk at home," she said. Standing at over 180 centimeters tall and now clad in her golden armor, she looked like a knight from a fairy tale. She acted like one, too, scooping him up into her arms in a princess carry.
In the arms of the tall, mature Diana, the high school student Leo looked almost petite. His silver hair spilled over her golden armor, like a knight and a princess. Or, perhaps, a knight and a prince. It seemed fitting either way. He instinctively clutched the hem of his skirt, trying to preserve some modesty, even though there was no one around to see.
Diana glanced at the Abomination's corpse on the ground, then pulled a golden rope from seemingly nowhere. She threw it upwards, and it shot through the remnant of the ceiling. She soared into the sky with Leo, the lasso pulling them up into the night. They leaped through the air and quickly disappeared.
"Wait," Leo said, his arms wrapped around his aunt's neck as they soared high above the city.
"What is it?" Diana asked.
"It's… nothing," he said, shaking his head. He had caught a glimpse of a small shadow darting between the tall buildings in the city below.
The flames and smoke had not yet dissipated.
"Is it over?" the Marine wondered, staring at the massive, decapitated corpse in the distance. He was still in a trance when his Transponder Snail crackled to life.
"Support troops are approaching the scene. Surviving soldiers, report your situation."
"The situation? The target is dead. Is that a situation?" the Marine muttered, feeling as if he were in a dream. The monster that had wiped out his entire unit had been killed?
He gave a brief report, knowing that the debriefing back at the base would be a nightmare. But he had survived. What more could he ask for? He looked back at the room where he had been hiding and was shocked again. The sofa was empty. The unconscious Nami was gone.
No one noticed that at the edge of the battlefield, a smaller, green figure, similar to the Abomination, was lurking in the shadows of a building. Sensing that the Abomination's presence had vanished, the green giant looked toward the corner of the night sky, its eyes filled with curiosity and a thirst for battle. Then, it melted back into the darkness, as if it had never been there.
The undercurrents of the city were stirring. What had happened here, including videos of the battle, would spread to the other side of the world in less than half an hour. But for now, this extraordinary battle was coming to an end. Its impact, however, was just beginning.
