Well after midnight, the coffee shop began to fill with the late-night crowd. Many of the patrons, men and women alike, found their eyes frequently drifting toward the perfect woman sitting at the corner table. However, her powerful aura kept them at a distance; no one dared to sit too close.
Like a beautiful landscape coming to life, Diana rose from her chair. "That's all I have to say," she said, bidding farewell to Barbara across the table. "If there's nothing else, I should go back. It's late, and my child will be worried."
"Child?!"
A cup shattered somewhere in the shop. Several men and women at nearby tables, who had been mustering the courage to approach her, let their elegant facades crumble. Their expressions shifted to a mixture of disappointment and despair.
Barbara was also shocked by the word "child." It confirmed just how important Leo was to Diana. No one would have ever imagined it. A god, truly becoming a part of a human family.
Staring at Diana for a long moment, Barbara finally whispered, "You can't hide it from him forever."
"Of course," Diana said, a faint, soft smile gracing her perfect face. "When he's eighteen, a man fully grown, I'll tell him everything he wants to know. He can choose whatever life he wants for himself; I'll respect his decision. But until then, I won't allow anyone to disturb his life."
A cold glint flashed in her eyes. She turned and strode out of the coffee shop, the heels of her boots clicking on the floor.
"Just an ordinary human boy," Barbara shook her head, unable to accept it. Then, she recalled Diana's words and let out a laugh. "Leo Prince. Just what have you done? I really must meet you someday."
How could a child adopted by a god end up taming that very god?
Diana stepped out of the coffee shop and looked up at the light snow falling from the night sky. An idle thought crossed her mind: Is he at his desk doing homework, sitting on the sofa watching TV, or already asleep in his bed?
Whatever he was doing, she felt a sudden, powerful urge to see him. She wanted to kiss his cheek and hold him in her arms, just as she had on any other ordinary day for the past sixteen years.
"So, I was scared too," she murmured, holding her palm out to catch the snowflakes, feeling their cold touch.
That morning, when she learned that Barbara had shown Leo the photograph from World War I, she had been just as afraid as he was, if not more so. She worried that if he knew she was a descendant of the gods, that she had lived for centuries without aging, he would see her as a monster. She feared it would create a barrier between them, that his life would be turned upside down.
That was why she had hidden her true identity as Wonder Woman.
She bought a hamburger from a shop next to the cafe and started for home. But as she approached their building, she saw police cars lining the street and officers on patrol. A dark premonition washed over her.
She took the elevator up and stood before her apartment door. Taking a deep breath, she unlocked it and pushed it open. A cold wind howled in from the shattered floor-to-ceiling window on the balcony, whipping her dark hair around her face.
The dark living room was in shambles. The furniture was smashed, and the floor was cracked and trampled. From where she stood, Diana could see that the armor and weapons she had hidden on the ceiling—the Starlight Tiara, the Bracelets of Submission, the Sword of Hephaestus, her shield, and the Lasso of Hestia—were all gone.
"Something happened," Diana said, her hands clenching into fists. Her beautiful face was a mask of pure, emotionless calm. Her divinity, the part of her that was a god, was now at the forefront.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the city, pedestrians had long since evacuated the war-torn area. Leo, lying on the roof of the church, wore an expression of utter disbelief.
"How could it be her?"
He stared at the battlefield below, at the Spider-woman whose torn hood now revealed the lower half of her face. It looked so much like his childhood sweetheart—Nami! If it weren't for the fact that she was currently trying to restrain the Abomination with webs while perched on the wall of a ten-meter-high building, he would have been certain of her identity.
However, the female Spider-man's voice was obviously wrong.
"Could it be that it's just looking alike?" Before he could ponder it further, the battle took another turn.
With a series of sharp snaps, several of the tough webs holding the Abomination broke under the strain. The remaining webs, still anchored to the surrounding buildings, began to pull the walls down with them.
CRACK! RUMBLE!
The ground shook violently as buildings crumbled, sending clouds of dust into the air. The wall the Spider-woman was clinging to collapsed, and she fell unprepared. She was about to shoot a new web to save herself, but a massive green hand burst through the debris and webs, its five fingers clamping around her waist like an iron trap, pinning her arms to her sides.
In the dust, a pair of cold, terrifying green eyes opened.
"Let go of me!" the Spider-woman cried out, struggling fruitlessly against the inhuman grip. This monstrous, unyielding strength reminded her of the cross-dressing freak she had fought on the rooftop earlier.
The Abomination grinned, holding the petite Spider-woman in its hand. She looked as small and fragile as a baby in the grip of the three-meter-tall monster. It didn't release her. Instead, it brought its other hand up, wrapping it around the fist that held her.
The monster squeezed.
Its hands contracted inch by inch. The Spider-woman's struggles weakened, and blood began to trickle from the corner of her mouth.
The Abomination was going to crush her to death.
The female Spider-man Nami's feet gradually dropped, completely losing the strength to resist, and her consciousness began to dim.
Am I going to die here? Wait a minute, I haven't even worn a wedding dress yet…
Unwilling, her mind went black. But in the final moment before she lost consciousness, she heard a familiar voice, a voice she knew better than her own.
"I said, let her go."
A flash of silver light cut through the night, splitting the darkness and the crimson flames in two.
The Abomination was completely unprepared for an attack. Even if it had been, it wouldn't have cared. Rocket launchers hadn't been able to break its skin, so what could a mere sword do? It let the blade's tip grow larger in its pupil's reflection.
That was its mistake.
SQUELCH!
The vintage longsword pierced its tough eyelid and burst its right eyeball, the blade sinking deep into the socket.
How can this be?
The Abomination froze, its one remaining eye widening in shock as it stared at the silver-haired boy who had landed on its arm.
"I'm curious," Leo said, his face unnervingly calm, a trait inherited from his newfound divinity. "Do monsters like you feel pain?"
His emotionless expression was the most terrifying display of rage the monster had ever seen.
